He couldnât focus on much else but the kid in her arms. A kid. LennonâŚsheâŚshe had a kid. A kid that looked like the spitting image of her, from what he could see.Â
âNo,â he quickly said, perking up at the sudden bite in her tone. âNo, IâŚgot a phone call recently.â He scratched at the back of his head, averting his eyes to the ground. âI was keeping my distance. And then I heard and I took the first flight I could.â
Laughing nervously, he shoved his hands into his pockets. âTook me a week to build up the courage to walk up to you, and I do it like this.â
âWhat phone call? Whatâd you hear?â she asked, before she could stop herself. âSorry, that was invasive...â she trailed off, and chuckled a bit.
There was a time when invasive wasnât a word that existed between them. They had been seamless, weirdly connected in a way sheâd never actively acknowledged until he was gone, and theyâd trusted each other implicitly, even if they never did define things between them.
She couldnât help her small grin. âYou never were as smooth as you thought,â she teased.

Jasonâs eyes widened. Mama? As inâŚmom?Â
His heartbeat filled his ears and while it threatened to escape his chest. Did that mean that the kid in her hand was?Â
No, it couldnât have. He disappeared. He kept in touch with Kelsey. She would have told him. Right?
âYouâreâŚa mom,â he said, voice barely above a whisper. âThatâsâŚyour kid?â
âIâm a mom; Heâs my kid.â Lennon nodded carefully, swallowing hard. And she knew she had to tell him the other half of that, that her son was also his, but she was having a hard time forming any kind of coherent thought on the matter.
âThis is... Alex,â she said slowly, turning him slightly. âAlex, this is mamaâs... friend... Jason. Can you say hi?â
Alex tilted his head over, dirty blond locks shaking away from his little face, to look at Jason, confusion written all over his features. âHi...â he waved, seeming a little shy then, before tucking his face into the crook of her neck.
Lennon smiled a bit and shifted her weight onto her other foot. âWhen did you...â she began once more, turning to look at Jason. âWhen did you get back? Or have you been here the whole time?â
She couldnât keep the bite out of her tone at that, and she kind of regretted it then because she really had understood why he had to leave. She got why he was so hurt and why he needed space and distance. But that didnât mean it didnât hurt. That didnât mean three years without him by her side with their son was fair. Not that he knew. He couldnât have known.
see you again; len&jason.
âHey,â he said, scratching the back of his head as he stood before her.Â
He only planned this far with Kelseyâs information. Hell, he actually didnât plan on ambushing her while she was babysitting. What the fuck was he thinking? Oh wait, he wasnât.Â
âYouâre busy,â he said, âClearly. I had so much shit to say butâcrap, sorry. Cursing in front of kids.â
He took a step back, shaking his head. âThis was the dumbest idea Iâve had to date,â he said. âIâve gotta go.â
Wait, idea? So it wasnât a coincidence? He was here for her specifically?
Oh, God. Great.
âNo, wait,â she said quickly, her heart racing so quickly in her chest she thought it might fall off. âPlease.â She repositioned Alex on her hip, hoping he wouldnât turn around and leave. For all the emotions sheâd felt after his departure, for all the things she was feeling now, ultimately it came down to this moment. To seeing him again and praying he wouldnât leave again.
âMama,â Alex looked over at her. âIâm hungry.â
âI know, kiddo, weâre grabbing lunch soon,â she told him, pressed her lips to his temple, not once taking her eyes off Jason.

Jason Saks had reached a new low in his life.Â
His first low involved the loss of someone he thought heâd never lose, which led to him losing so much more than he thought he would in the long run. Howâs that for vague for you?
He still doesnât talk about it. Jason barely talked about anything; when he opened up about something, it was normally to her.
So for him to have to go without her made him feel like he lost the only family he had. Crap, no, he had family. He did.Â
But she was his best friend and his sister and the person he wouldnât hesitate taking a bullet for and she was just ripped away from him.Â
Just like that. Gone.Â
He thought heâd be okay. They were all supposed to be there for each other. But it all became too much for him.Â
He was spiraling downward and didnât want to take anyone with him.Â
So he disappeared. He had to find himself. Had to form a Jason without Ames.Â
Years later, heâs slowly getting there.Â
So when he says heâs reached a new low in his life, he has. Why? Because this low included stalking his ex-girlfriend for almost a week, learning her routine from afar.Â
(He had to thank the internet and a certain blonde outside of the country for the help.)
Something happened to him after the accident. Something after his downward spiral and the attempts at therapy. Jason became impulsive. Weirdly so.Â
So when he spent a week stalking his ex-girlfriend, seeing her walking around with a child, he figured she had dropped all of her plans to become someoneâs nanny. And that just left an uneasy feeling inside of him.
(He worried she didnât reach her dreams because of him. He wouldnât be able to live with that knowledge, too.)
So, newly weirdly impulsive Jason did what newly weirdly impulsive Jason knew how to do bestânothing that smart.Â
Before he could realize it, his feet had him on a path that would surely ensue a one way collision with Lennon and whosever child she had taken to tending to lately.Â
When he stopped, just in front of her and locked eyes with her, the thought of Kelsey killing him ran through his mind.
Oh, heâd soon be a dead man.Â
âJ--Jason...â Lennon breathed, her already big and bright eyes opened as wide as saucers as she registered what was happening.
Jason, as in her babyâs father, as in her almost something, was standing right in front of her after nearly three whole years. Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach, because of all the times sheâd imagined this moment (and sheâd imagined it plenty), she never once thought itâd be like this, so out of nowhere. Though she, of all people, should know better than to think she couldâve planned something like this.
âUm...â She blinked twice, and took a step back, putting a bit of distance between them, as she tried to figure out what to say. However, for all the words sheâd thought about saying to him, now that the moment was here, she had absolutely nothing. âHi?â
see you again; len&jason.
With the way sheâd grown up, and the way her life had turned out, Lennon had made a vow that no one besides her would ever be the center of her life. Sheâd live for herself, and everyone else could wait. It had a lot to do with no one putting her first as a kid, or even as a teenager, and she promised herself it would never happen again. And sure, her heart beat strongly for both of her best friends, and sheâd go to the ends of the earth for both of them, but she would always come first, regardless.
And then, she had her son, and everything changed.
Nicholas Alexander Carter-Saks was born to her on a cool summer morning in June, six pounds, four ounces, nineteen inches, and so much love she didnât know what to do with surrounded by both his uncles. Nic had been with her every step of the way from the beginning, and refused to leave her side, and sheâd been so incredibly thankful, she named her son after him, and even though she didnât give a damn about religion, made him his godfather.
Heâd been touched (she still playfully mocked him for crying), and Marc joked that heâd been jealous (but heâd cried too), and Lennon thought she couldnât be luckier than sheâd been in that moment, but all that had been missing was one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. Alexâs (as sheâd lovingly called her son) father.
Thanks to that stupid accident, where sheâd thought she wouldâve lost her best friend, sheâd actually lost the guy who at the time she hadnât realized just how badly sheâd fallen for until he was gone. Jason.
Lennon had never underestimated just how much he cared about Ames, she could relate, itâs why they got along, but heâd taken losing Ames without actually losing her so much harder than she couldâve imagined, and she watched him fall apart before her eyes, until one day, he was just gone without a trace.
And then the next day the lines on the stick turned pink.
Sheâd never seen him again since, but she understood, she knew he needed to get away, that Vancouver held way too many memories of the girl whoâd saved him. She just wished she couldâve shared this little piece of magic with him.
âHi!â Alex grinned, resting both little hands on her face.
Motherhood had been unlike anything she ever experienced. It changed her in ways she never thought sheâd change. She was more patient, more resilient, and more of a fighter than before. And now her son came first. Before even herself.
âHi, buddy,â she greeted, wrapping both arms around him and pulling him into her chest. âI missed you today.â She pressed a kiss to her temple before signing the sign-out sheet at the front desk of the daycare, hooking his diaper bag over her shoulder.
She thanked the secretary before stepping out into the bright sunlit street. âReady for lunch?â
He nodded eagerly. âIâm hungry.â He was two years old and the smartest little boy sheâd ever met.
Lennon chuckled and kissed him again. âOf course you are.â She walked over to her car, nuzzling his cheek, so focused on him she hadnât realized there was someone walking toward her. âOh! Sorry, I wasnât--â
Oh. Of all the people in the entire city of Vancouver, it had to be him.

"Well, I guess weâre settling for food and TV for now," he told her. Jason got up from the couch, grabbed his plate, and headed for the kitchen. After depositing it into the sink and reminding himself that heâd have to do them later, he went back to the living room.Â
He threw an arm over Lennonâs shoulders and pulled her closer. What, you donât watch TV with your more-than-friends friend like that? Either way, itâs not like it meant anything more than that.Â
Thatâs what he kept telling himself.
"Sounds good to me," she said as he pulled her closer. She looked over at him for a second at the action, and had to smile a bit before turning slightly to grab the throw blanket off the back of the couch. She tossed it over both of them and curled into his side.
She'd be lying if she said this wasn't nice. Like really nice.

Lennon snorted. âAll right, all right, drop it now before I get offended,â she said holding her hand up. Though there was a hint of a smile on her face. It was true; Ames could outbake pretty much anyone without even trying too hard. And she and Jason never really talked about it, but she could see how much he appreciated having her.
She took a smaller bite this time, as if to contemplate his words. âYeah, I guess,â she shrugged. Sheâd started noticing it more recently just how much theyâd become intertwined in her life and how easily she slipped them into conversation. âTheyâre different from all my other friends. Theyâve done a lot for me, both knowingly and unknowingly.âÂ
"Sounds nice," Jason said in assurance. "To have people like that in your life. I understand how that feels. Ames isâŚpretty much like that for me."Â
He made a promise to himself, when he first started college, that he would do everything he could to better himself. It was a miracle he even managed to get a scholarship in the first place. It didnât come as a surprise to him when he spiraled his freshman year. What did was Ames in the form of his personal guardian angel coming to his rescue.Â
They knew each other from around town, both having grown up in a place that wasnât the best thing to look (or live) at. She had been there before for him, telling him that she believed he was capable of so much moreâŚand she was right.Â
"Yeah, weâre watching something mind numbing now," Jason said, changing the channel to whatever crappy movie was currently playing on Syfy. "Before this turns into a sob fest about all three of them."
Her assumptions had been right about what Ames was to Jason, and maybe their circumstances weren't exactly the same, but they both had clearly needed to find someone like the three of them, and they'd come in at exactly the right point in their lives.
She couldn't help but laugh though. They were getting sappy and it wasn't their thing in the slightest. "Your fault we're even having this conversation," she said taking another bite of her pancake before turning to see what was on TV. "I was hoping for food and more sex, and then you went ahead and started asking questions." She pointed at him and tapped his nose and picked a banana off her plate.
"Hey," Jason said, taking another bite of his pancakes, "At least you didnât ask me about your baking skills." Okay, maybe not the best thing to say, but in his book no one really beat Ames in the baking department. It made him feel like he was at home. Whatever that was.
"Youâre really close to them, arenât you?" Jason said. He took the final bite of his food before he washed it down with milk. "Not saying that you donât have other friends, but I never hear you talk about anyone else like you do them."
Lennon snorted. "All right, all right, drop it now before I get offended," she said holding her hand up. Though there was a hint of a smile on her face. It was true; Ames could outbake pretty much anyone without even trying too hard. And she and Jason never really talked about it, but she could see how much he appreciated having her.

Jason took another bite before he washed it down with a gulp of milk. âYouâre not going to hit me if I tell you theyâre almost as good as the ones Ames makes, will you?â That woman was practically his mother. Well, like his adoptive mother. He had worked his ass off to get here after his parents seemed to shut off their parental switch.
He nodded, taking another bite. âIâm assuming youâre the one that makes most of the meals for Nic, at least. Iâve seen him cook. Iâve also seen him jump when the toast pops out. The kitchen is not his natural habitat.â
Lennon snorted. "No, but I should, shouldn't I?" There was still a hint of a smile on her face as she added whipped cream and syrup to the pancake on her plate. "I'll let it slide just because it's sort of a compliment." She shrugged and took a bite, sighing happily, proud of her handiwork. They were delicious, and definitely hitting the spot.
She raised her right leg onto the chair, hugging it to her chest. "I do," she told him, mouth full as she chewed. "Or Marc sometimes. Nic's problem with the toaster is he isn't a fan of being caught off guard. He tries to time it and fails miserably every time. It's kind of hilarious. But if it's related to his diet, he knows how to make it. And that's about it," she said. "Oh, and cupcakes? He and Marc have this weird thing about cupcakes... I don't..." she trailed off and shook her head. She stopped trying to understand the weirder things about her friends a long time ago.
"Toppings are over there," she motioned toward the counter as he grabbed a plate for himself before turning back to her cooking. "I wanted to," she told him. "Because maybe pre Ames you wouldnât have done them, but you did and it meant⌠means a lot to me," she said. "And I owe you for that."
There was something weirdly domestic about the way they were moving about the kitchen. She didnât read too much into it, but it definitely struck her how comfortable they were around one another and how they could move so seamlessly as if theyâd been doing this forever now. Her blush had yet to disappear and her cheeks still felt hot.
"Sheâs just like him. He doesnât bake, but heâs always doing something weird at even weirder hours. They deserve each other," she said to him, trying to draw attention away from herself a bit.
"What are friends for, right?" he said offhandedly as he grabs a spoonful of fruit and pours it onto his pancakes. Probably not the best choice of food to be eating before he jumps back into bed, but it is the day after her birthday so itâs allowed. It has to be allowed.Â
The ease of all of this was both starting to freak him out and fill him with comfort. He had that same feeling back when he and Ames started becoming friends, having lived on the same floor his freshman year. Sheâd often find him hiding out in the back of the lounge, avoiding his roommate for whatever reason. Not that his relationship with Ames was anything like his relationship with Lennon. Just the opposite.Â
"Oh they do. The amount of times her motherâs asked me if heâs proposed yet is ridiculous. I think she forgets weâre still in college, sometimes," Jason said.Â
He put his plate down and watched as she finished the pancake. Shutting off the stove, he said, âI think youâve made enough for now. Sit and eat with me.â
"What are friends for," she echoed. It still surprised her every now and then that she and Jason were this close. It was rare for Lennon to ever be this comfortable with anyone, the last two having been Marc and Nic. She'd always played her relationships close to the vest, always guarding herself and her heart, but Jason seemed to break through that so easily. Yes, she'd hooked up with people in the past, but to stay the night and even go as far as breakfast? That wasn't her. At all. She wondered if it had something to do with the circumstances of their friendship.
"Maybe down the line or whatever. They seem like down the line types, right? Or something."
Lennon looked down at the skillet and spatula once he'd shut off the stove before setting it down on the counter beside her and moving on to grab another plate for herself and following him to the table, setting the plate of pancakes between them.
She took her seat and served herself. "How'd I do?" she asked, reaching for the whipped cream.
