The Art of Less Is More with @lucidlines
To see more of Caitlin’s tattoo art, follow @lucidlines on Instagram.
“The science behind the process and the idea of being able to carry art around with you and transform your appearance has always intrigued me,” says 25-year-old tattoo artist Caitlin Thomas (@lucidlines). After studying graphic design, Caitlin went on to pursue illustration and the visual arts before taking an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio in Adelaide, South Australia.
“People may be surprised to learn that I only have a couple of tattoos,” she says. “Many people have the belief that all tattoo artists need to be covered, but I am trying to show that isn’t necessary anymore and that it is more about the art.”
Outside of her life as a tattoo artist, Caitlin is equally passionate about music, playing the drums in bands and writing music with friends. “Leading a double life has proven to be a tiring venture with a newfound respect for days off,” she muses. When applying for jobs, Caitlin showcased the drums she worked on with a wood-burning tool as an example of her steady line work.
Caitlin describes her style as “minimalism” and her technique is inspired by 18th and 19th century line engravings — the idea of grasping a concept or image using its basic form. “I am hoping to help create a new movement of tattooing that promotes the idea that less is more,” she says. “I do enjoy and respect the extremely detailed and colorful style of tattooing, but I just can’t deny the satisfaction of successfully portraying an image based only on line work, a single shade of ink and making use of the natural skin color that people bring in themselves.”

Unfolding the Art of Origami with @wenlise_fold
To see more of Wenche Lise’s enchanting paper foldings, follow @wenlise_fold on Instagram.
“I started doing origami on a family holiday in France two years ago,” recalls Wenche Lise Fossland (@wenlise_fold) of Namsos, Norway, whose interest in paper folding was sparked by a beautiful origami lamp.
“It is fascinating that there is almost no limit to the shapes you can turn a flat paper into.” When the holiday was over, Wenche Lise couldn’t stop folding. “One fold took the other and I started searching for all kinds of designs,” she remembers. Finding inspiration in origami online tutorials, Wenche Lise adds her own touch to each piece by creating lively environments for the paper figures, usually with a humorous, unexpected twist. “I even look at the vegetables in the grocery store in a different way now,” she says. “A fennel can be an exotic island and the broccoli has great potential to be tree material in my origami world.”
In celebration of the Paper Towns trailer release rapidly approaching, I made a few doodles to go along with the book, written by fishingboatproceeds.
((also I know the last quote is wrong, I realized there wouldn’t be enough space but felt too lazy to redo it because I’m a loser))
Turtle-duck Date Night
This is my piece for the upcoming The Legend of Korra / Avatar: The Last Airbender Tribute Exhibition at Gallery Nucleus, opening this Saturday, March 7th, 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Mike and I will be there doing a signing for the first half of the reception (there are a limited number of spots in the signing line, but I’m not sure how they are working that), and hanging out for the rest. I think there will be a raffle, and plenty of cool stuff to purchase. A bunch of the crew members from the production will be there too (hopefully including some ATLA folks), so it is going to be a fun family reunion for us. I can’t wait to see all of the incredible artwork.
As for this piece, I used and modified Emily Tetri's production painting of Harmony Tower (designed by Lee Jung-Su). Otherwise, I drew and painted the rest of it. I based the turtle-duck boats on the charming swan boats I saw while visiting Ueno Park in Tokyo. Gallery Nucleus will be selling the above artwork as an exclusive print, in a limited edition of 100, to be released on opening night (and I’m pretty sure I’ll be signing them). I will be donating 100% of my share of the proceeds to an LGBTQ suicide prevention hotline.
I hope to see you Saturday! Get there early, as the lines for these Gallery Nucleus openings wrap all the way around a city block. If you can’t make it to the opening, the show will be hanging for two weeks. There is an event being planned for the closing as well. More on that later.
