Filmmakers have developed a 3D production for IMAX theaters displaying some of the greatest high-resolution structures in the universe.

Hidden Universe takes audiences on an extraordinary journey deep into space in the cinematic medium that transports audiences like no other. The deepest reaches of our universe are brought to life with unprecedented clarity through real images captured by the world’s most powerful telescopes—seen on the giant-screen and in 3D for the first time. Stunning, high-resolution images of space allow you to explore the earliest galaxies, watch stars being born in vivid clouds of gas and dust, tour the surface of Mars, and witness images of distant celestial structures including stunning views of the Sun. These dramatic new images offer fresh insight into the origins and evolution of the universe. 

Narrated by Golden Globe winner Miranda Richardson, Hidden Universe is a December Cinema Productions film produced in association with Film Victoria, Swinburne University of Technology, and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Produced in association with MacGillivray Freeman Films.

“The experience of filming in the Atacama Desert at such world-class observing facilities has been amazing,” said film director Russell Scott. “Some of the otherworldly locations among the Andes mountains almost make you feel like you’re on another planet, and this sensation of nature – beyond what we are used to – is exactly what I want to transmit to the audience.”

“Hidden Universe will explore the Sun, our human connection to the cosmos, and amazing views of faraway galaxies in a previously unseen way – giving a fresh insight into the Universe,” explains producer Stephen Amezdroz.
