This trip seemed rather unplanned. One day it was Kyle saying, I have to go to Barcelona for work and we need a vacation, so buy a ticket and meet me afterwards. And me simply saying, Okay. But not fully meaning it.
It was something nice to entertain, for sure, but I didn’t think it would ever actually be a thing that I did in my lifetime. Type A me didn’t save for a year specifically for this, or really ever think about Spain as a possibility, or feel like I was allowed to do it.
So when I bought my ticket, I also bought trip insurance for the first time ever, because I simply could not believe that it was something that I was doing. It felt weird in a way that it probably shouldn’t feel weird. My mantra was I’m 26 and a financially responsible adult who is allowed to do this.

Fast forward to me on a plane traveling across the pond to the Heathrow airport. This was now a thing that I was definetly doing because well, there was literally no escape. That trip insurance seemed like a total waste. The mantra for the chick sitting in seat 28H was now Shut up and enjoy it.
I made a concerted effort to chill the fuck out throughout this whole journey. It totally failed sometimes (ahem, renting that car) but I think I champed out in other places. When we got to Madrid, we really didn’t have anything planned at all and I was legitimately cool with that. To be honest, I was somewhat toured out. My brain felt like mush from everything I had been learning.

First we went to Mueso del Pardo. Kyle loved it, and I loved watching him love it. Not that I didn’t love it, but witnessing someone’s pure joy like that is the coolest.
FUN FACTS:
We went unintentionally full circle, not realizing that Las Meninas by Velázquez was housed there. In Barcelona, we went to the Picasso museum and saw all 58 paintings he created based on the original work. So that was cool!
Goya’s Black Paintings are also here. Wanna know about them? Apparently towards the end of his life, Goya couldn’t deal with becoming old, turned to complete paranoia, and shut himself off from society. He moved into a house that was previously owned by a deaf man and he was also deaf from an undiagnosed illness. He started painting on the walls and no one knew that they were there (except his children) until after his death. They had to cut them out of the walls.

This was my highlight of the trip. The only thing I really knew I wanted to do in Madrid was watch some good flamenco dancing. My friend Arielle suggested this place, which is apparently in the book 1,000 places to See Before You Die. Forever indebted to her for this.
When trying to explain what flamenco was to Kyle, all I could say was, “it’s like really loud and passionate tap dancing.” With that accurate description, he really didn’t need anything else. Anyway, he was totally blown away, which made me the happiest.

My sister’s boyfriend made us go to mass on Christmas eve. And it wasn’t just mass, it was 4 o’clock mass, at the St. Peter’s Cathedral. All the bells and whistles and ornate costumes were included, and they even had the audacity to change shit up on me. And with your spirit, who the hell made that call?
Someone said, “Oh dear God,” not in context to prayer and I immediately wrote a Facebook status about it. If I wasn’t already on my way to hell, I certainly signed the deal in that moment.
I was actually once a real deal Catholic, because that is really your only option growing up in Scranton, PA. I wouldn’t even call it an option. It’s a requirement. Catholic school killed all chances of becoming a mathematician, but who needs that when you have God?

Despite being a lapsed Catholic (who is shrouded in guilt, believe me), visiting churches still creates this warm feeling of familiarity, and I instantly have the urge to light a candle and say a prayer.
To me, Sagrada Família is more of an art installation than it is a place of worship. I left feeling cold (partially because it was just really cold, but the irony is still not lost on me).
Fun facts:
Antoni Gaudí’s magnum opus, which began construction in 1882 and is anticipated to be completed in 2026.
Gaudí devoted his final years solely to this project. Obsessed with his work, he neglected his appearance and personal health. When he was hit by a tram in 1926, he was mistaken for a beggar and did not receive immediate aid. It took two days to identify his body. The construction was only like maybe 25% complete when he died.

Fun facts:
Gaudí was heavily influenced by nature and all the columns look like trees. If you look super close, there is this golden triangle up there. JESUS stuff.

We took a night tour of Casa Milà and then saw this really “Gaudí” light show (get it?)

Fun facts:
Essentially this really affluent family was jealous Gaudí was renovating their friends house down the block. So they decided to one up them and were like, “Hey G. BUILD US A HOUSE FROM NOTHING.” So that’s just what he did. But the reactions to the design were no bueno. Everyone thought it was a joke.
Eventually people shut up about it.
Gaudí didn’t finish construction on it. The family was annoyed that he was not following the budget. G was annoyed that they were annoying.

Fun Facts:
The main fact is that I didn't do much research on this, but I do know it was made for another affluent family, and Gaudí had a house there too. He lived while storming up ideas for Sagrada Família.
Cadaqués is about two hours North of Barcelona. Kyle, always the romantic, planned an epic day trip where we drove through the Spanish countryside to Salvador Dali’s house. Me, always the realist and future tripper, sat in the passenger seat trying to calm my nerves from the moment we got our rental car to the moment we returned said rental car.
RETROSPECT is cool though. When my hair turns brittle and gray, I’ll tell 'youngsters’ I drove through the Spanish countryside to a Mediterranean coastal town, looked at Dali’s erect penis shaped pool, and then ate pan con tomate while staring out at sea.
*Portlligat Museum-House, Cadaqués, Spain
Fun facts:
Dali and his father were in a bit of a tiff after Dali inscribed the following statement on his drawing Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ: ‘Sometimes, I spit for fun on my mother's portrait.’
After refusing to recant the message, his father told him to never place even his pinky toe in Cadaqués, EVER AGAIN. Dali, like a rich teenager, bought a small fisherman’s cabin, as a big F you to the man. To continue the F you to the man spirit, he bought up more cabins and built himself a weirdo wonderland. And his dad eventually forgave him. Probably after the realization that his son has this epic party house.
