I am tired in all the ways a human can be tired.
Emotionally.
Physically.
Mentally.
Spiritually.
I am tired to my very bones. There is no place in this world where I can rest because even my dreams are tired.
The burdens heaped upon my shoulders, invisible to all except my fellow kindred spirits, who know weariness as intimately as I do because we walk the same path. They know despair's weight in their hearts, they know melancholy's sigh in their ears, they know the shining hope that flutters between their fingers, desperate to grasp it's golden wings as it eludes them.
This is the year, they tell me, their smiles soft and tired, their voices strong, this is the year we will be free. I want to return their smile, I want to nod my head, I want to hope.
But hope is a golden bird forever out of reach. After so many years I can no longer hear its song.
I want to rest, beneath the olive tree my grandfather planted. I want to listen to the birds singing.
From the River to the Sea,
Palestine will be Free.

into the deep
who are we our time left on this orb has grown somewhat thin we live these tumble-down lives on a wire razor-sharp and easily broken from across the rooftops the sound of a church bell tolling at our feet a broken sidewalk with weeds sprouting through the cracks
who are we we walk down to the beach remove our clothes and wade out into the cold green water we are humans and so there are testicles and breasts penises and vaginas all splashed by the waves of the incoming tide and then hidden by the salt water now we are swimming out toward the buoy and the ocean is a part of our bodies schools of fish live inside of us and the whales of our souls leap and jump breaking the surface of our humanity
who are we we both know and don't know accept and deny live and yet fail to live fully the bell on the buoy tolls in time with the church bell the wire of this tumble-down life is getting thinner still razor-sharp yes but broken now like our time and we are past the buoy and into the deep.

Evergreen
The nights are cold and quiet;
I spend my time filling empty pages,
seaching for an answer
between the lines.
At dawn I walk
till my feet throb
and my calves ache;
staring at the street lights
till I scratch out my eyes.
When I return I scald my skin,
taking stock of the remnants of flesh,
scrubbing the skin
you touched.

What is a name?
Leaving behind my childhood name, my heart Empty like a book without pages Exhausted, I was. Content with my New beginning, except An intimate piece of who I once was is now gone. Most people would say a name is someone’s Identity, connection, pride. That wasn’t the Case for me anymore. Honestly, did I make the right choice? Erasing the name my mother gave me? Lake; a place of linden trees – that was the meaning. I Left my past life shattered behind me. Please realize this wasn’t Easy for me to do. When I was small, I loved my name, but I resent it now. No connection to what my Life is like nowadays. Knitting my old story closed like a sweater, prepared to Explore the young palm tree, Soft, and delicate.
Sitting in my dark room, the morning dews drifting on the panes beyond the closed curtain, soft daylight dancing in-between its own shadows, music playing on my right ear alone, I've not one thought left inside of me that's not about you. I've come miles and years away, enough that anyone would let go. Anyone apart from me, that is. I look left and see you walk past me. I blink and your face is of a time I can't recall easily anymore. Tears fill my eyes at the thought of it. That I might ever forget how you were, who you are still to me. When I lean my head on the wall, eyes now on the ceiling, I'm thinking of then when you smiled looking at me. Swiftly, through the tears, my lips curl up. A memory so lovely is it to me, even despair is shy to confront. When my lashes shudders, heavy with tears as my eyes close up, I'm reminded, as if in a whirlwind, all that was you, all that which had me know and feel you. Sometimes you come to me in my dreams and there, I sleep as if my bed were you and I was in your company. After all this time, I still falter when I walk, and I hope you'd magically appear beside me. Maybe even call me from behind. Or recognize me when we are not us anymore. But because time has passed, I know it's love. I don't recall myself without recalling you. I never saw you the first time. Sitting there in the corner keeping to yourself, when I hadn't even looked, I had felt you. When I hadn't even seen, I had saw. It's that way even now. You're nowhere near, and yet, you couldn't possibly be closer. All these years and I feel you just the same. Always a heartache. Always , always so joyous. Such beautiful memories to remind me time and again, that it was you. That it was love, only because it was You.

what a beautiful thing,Â
this                     weight,Â
not that you meant it to be.
thats just how it lays      across my shoulders,Â
love,                 always as something heavy.Â
something for me to carry
until you            held a mirror so
I could see the weight
as wings.
what a beautiful thing
to love       and be loved      Â
           and be love,
what a beautiful thing
to be.Â

At The Time
The poems are there to prove
you existed once, and that I, too, was there
to where do we go when we dream?
a whisper in the tree branches tells me nowhere, nowhere as its falling leaves turn to origami dragons
they are delicate, they are quiet, ever so quiet when they fall & fly & soar & dive, i thought i was watching through a window
i am over the tallest of the trees now, they cannot keep their secrets from me any longer, i can now watch them dream
as they wonder
where they are
Dear Palestine, I'm Sorry.
I find it hard to look you in the eye when mine are hazy from the tears blocking my corneas, because I was born free when your people are being slaughtered for the whole world to see.
Your eyes, forever locked onto the hundreds of lifeless bodies as I can turn off my phone from emitting images of scattered souls. You lie in the shadows as your world weeps and shivers, while I lay beneath blankets of solace, dreaming of tranquility. Your families voices forever still, by bombs of chaos and violence as I kiss my spouse, embrace my kids, and say “I love you”. You wonder how much longer you can last without food, as I sit and eat my meals with sterling silver cutlery, crystal glasses. You comb through the concrete, searching for the bodies of your children, as I comb through my hair and put on YSL no. 52 at my porcelain vanity.
Your people dream to go back to Masjid Al-Aqsa and pray to Allah where I haven’t stepped foot in the musalla in months. You hear a mother and father weeping for their martyred son as I whisper to myself, “Did they have to kill another one?”
You look towards the sky and the smoke from the bombs is etched against the horizon as I pace back and forth, fixated on the picture from the TV. This was another act of genocide.Â

too much
i love flowers: tulips, daisies, and daffodils – you name it but, taking care of flowers can be too much trim the stem, make sure they are fed and watered my flowers are hard to take care of becauseÂ
my feelings are delicate like orchids and rose petals teardrops stained down my cheeks, cherry and swollen eyes i dream of fields full of white poppies and blue violets and thoughts of mythical scrutiny that is carried in the flowerpot i planted them in with every step, corollas drop one by one until only the pistil and stamen remain
all flowers are pretty to look at for a while until they become brown and bruised, and that’s when no one wants them anymore.
taking care of my flowers is too much i’m always going to be too much.

apple cider vinegar cocktails
my body is the one thing about me that i despise hip dips and cellulite starving yourself for days because you don’t want to gain anymore weight
comparing myself to all the skinny girls on instagram wondering why i’ve never had a boyfriend pleading for someone to just look at me but when he did, i felt nauseous
my form, a canvas brushed in shades of tan that guys don’t lust over stomach fat and large thighs and apple cider vinegar cocktails
fading fragments
pieces of herself were chipped off every time he stopped to smell the roses, he never bought for her. she wanted so desperately for him to care for her in the way she cared for him.
the clouds melted and poured over its weight until one day she couldn't take it anymore. it was heavy, like the suitcase of her past that she sought to leave at the baggage claim but her body felt as though it was burning like coals.
she tried not to hold her breath when she cried but eventually her tears would fill up the caspian sea.
now, she held her breath because the silence was the prettiest thing she’d ever heard, besides the chatter in the airport lounge. and yet, she still crawled back to him knowing that he would pierce her heart with every step.
