I don't necessarily agree with this but it has such a mathematical quality to it somehow

Ok I love the idea that monogamous relationships are a subset of polycules, that makes total sense.
However, they're in a sense the unit polycule. Let's say that a polycule with n members is an n-cule. Then a monogamous couple is a 2-cule, and a 2-cule is the only order of polycule with a just one nontrivial subset, itself.
A 3-cule of Andrew, Bob, and Charles could be divided into 3 different 2-cules, (Andrew+Bob, Bob+Charles, Andrew+Charles), while a 2-cule of Daphne and Erica can't be divided further.
