I remember coming out upon the northern Great Plains in the late spring. There were meadows of blue and yellow wildflowers on the slopes, and I could see the still, sunlit plain below, reaching away out of sight. At first there is no discrimination in the eye, nothing but the land itself, whole and impenetrable. But then the smallest things begin to stand out of the depths- herds and rivers and groves- and each of these has perfect being in terms of distance of silence and of age. Yes, I thought, now I see the earth as it really is; never again will see hings as I saw them yesterday or the day before.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Wolfe (on Kesey)
"'Dont say stop plunging into the forest,' Kesey says. 'Dont say stop being a pioneer and come back here and help these people through the door. If Leary wants to do that, that's good, its a good thing and somebody should do it. But somebody has to be the pioneer and leave the marks for others to follow.'" (27) "The main figures on Perry Lane were two novelists, Robin White, who had just written the Harper Prize novel, 'Elephant Hill,' and Gwen Davis, a kind of West Coast Dawn Powell. In any case, all the establshed Perry Laners could hee Kesey coming a mile away. He had Jack London Martin Eden Searching Hike, the hick with intellectual yearnings, written all over him. He was from Oregon- who the hell was ever from Oregon?- and he had an Oregon country drawl and too many muscles and callouses on his hands and his brow furrowed when he was thinking hard, and it was perfect." (31) "Somehow the Perry Lane set got the idea that his family were Okies, coming out of the Dust Bowl during the Depression, and then up to Oregon, wild, sodden Oregon, where they had fought the land and shot bears and the rivers were swift and the salmon leaped silver in the spring big two hearted rivers. [...] Beautiful!... the current fantasy...but how to tell them? [...] - when they had such a nice clear picture of him as the horny-nailed son of the Western sod, fresh from Springfield, Oregon. It was true that his father, Fred Kesey, had started him and his younger brother, Joe, shooting and fishing and swimming as early as they could in any way manage it, also boxing, running, wrestling, plunging down on the rapids of the Willamette and the McKenzie Rivers on inner-tube rafts, with a lot of rocks and water and sartin' death foamin' down below. Bu it was not so they could tame animals, forests, rivers, wild upturned convulsed Oregon. It was more to condition them to do more of what his father had already done a pretty good job of- claim whatever he can rightly get by being man enough to take it, and not on the frontier, either... Kesey Sr. had been part of the 1940s migration from the Southwest- not of 'Okies' but of Protestant entrepreeurs who looked to the West Coast as a land of business opportunity. He started out in the Wilammette Valley with next to nothing and founded a marketing cooperative for dairy farmers, the Eugene Farmers Cooperative, and built it into the biggest dairy operation in the area, retailing under the name of Darigold. He was one of the big postwar success stories in the Valley- and ended up not in an old homestead with wood sidings and lightning rods but in a modern home in the suburbs, lowslung and pastel, on a street called Debra Lane. The incredible postwar American electro-pastel surge into the suburbs! it was sweeping the Valley, with superhighways, dreamboat cars, shopping centers, soaring thirty-foot Federal Sign & Signal Company electric suerscultures- Eight new Plexiglas Display Features!- a surge of freedom and mobility, of cars and the money to pay for them and the time to enjoy them and a home where you can laze in a rich pool of pale wall-to-wall or roar through the technological wonderworld in motor launches and, in the case of men like his father, private plans- The things he would somehow suddenly remember about the old home town- [...]" (32-33) "Kesey starts talking in the old soft Oregon drawl and everybody is quiet. (65) "HE comes on soft, with the Oregon drawl[...]" "But Kesey doesnt even blink and his voice doesnt even change one half tone, just the old Oregon drawl[...]" "[...]then he says softly, in the Oregon drawl[...]" "[...] the way it sounded in Kesey's certain Oregon drawl[...]" (200ish, 170?)

Word Portrait #1: First Impression
Black and Blue, Curls and Locs, Gnarled teeth, With colors of their own. A canine companion; Petrichor loves pbjs. Nomadic, raised homeless on wheels, Moved out of Oklahoma, to New York, to Portland. Panhandlers used to make a hundred bucks Now they don't talk about it much. Musings of the internet and modern rapidization fire of instruction. How to do it yourself, Without nobody else. Punks don't say hello to each other anymore; They have their own friends, their own screens, plus they wouldn't ever wear your blouse. It wasn't the turmeric that made you swell; quitting cold turkey will make you sweat.
Word Portrait #2: in Retrospect
Big hands buttoning a red dress that used to be gold (we went out looking for firewood Found a whole house torn out a dumpster in front Estate sale rejects I climbed up and in admitting i dont glean much) A bag of jello boxes spilt out, Trailed through debris We left them alone Not to disturb gelatinous nature HANG ON HARVEY! swags of cloth (We found wood) Up on the roof Chasing sun, Watching the neighbor dog stretch Four paws conquering grass On the sunny side of these damned old oaks. A liter and a half of Plaid's finest red (Jordan didn't drink his share So i broke a glass into a shiv) Breaking pallettes to burn d e c o m p r e s s i o n Gifted a wallet stitched from Pendleton scraps So you can be somebody who can buy tailors and booze. Goin, trimmin, without her Advise you pitch a tent rather than popping a canopy, a tent, or a tarp, close to the ground. And in the morning, an informal salute, sent you South.

Et in tenebris sTraui lectulum meum Vbi nullus ordo sed sempiternus horror inhabitat And in the dark, lying on my bed Where no order but everlasting horror dwelleth Job 17:13 If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. Job 10:22 a land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.
Nunc in puluere dormiam Quasi putraedo [putra edo] consumendus sum Now I sleep in the dust I rot [Im like rotting meat] Job 7:21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? For now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.For now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be. Job 13:28 And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth-eaten.
Per Peccatum Mors In Omnes Homines Mors Pertransiit Death through sin Death spread amongst all men Rom 5 Refers to Romans 5, specifically to Romans 5:12: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
"And space? didn't the pamphlets claim there was elbow room? Perhaps, but with all that hellish greenery on every side could a soul tell it? Could he see more'n a couple hundred yards in any direction? Back on the plains, there is space. I will admit that a man back on the plains might feel a freezing emptiness in his bowels when he looked in all directions and saw nothing but what has gone before and what will come, nothing but far-stretching flat land and sage. But I say a man can get accustomed, get comfortable and accustomed to emptiness, just the way e can get accustomed to the cold or accustomed to the dark. That place, however, that . . . Place, when I cast my eyes about, at fallen trees decaying under the vines, at the rain chewing away the countryside, at the river which runs into the sea yet the sea is not full... At all... At things such as... A soul cannot find the words... Such as plants and flowers, the beasts and the birds, the fishes and the insects! I do not mean that. At all the things going on and on and on. Don't you see? If just all came at me so downright thick and fast that I knew I could never get accustomed to it! But I do not mean that. I mean I had no house but do as I did; God as my witness... I had no choice! Kesey, Sometimes A Great Notion, p22

#1: With the gums gone, chattering teeth are chomped loose and though the nose is not nothing, the eye delivers directly to the brain. And now the heart of the radiator lying on the floor is murmuring. The even row of it fit to raise shivering children. You will count their breath You will stay in the midst of them, You will know small breaths. You will hear them in the narrow hallways of sight. #2: With the gums wrought chattering teeth chomp loose and though the nose is not nothing the eye delivers directly to the brain.
