Maybe hot take: Mal should have properly apologised to Jake about the way he treated him all those years, and had some sort of heart to heart about how Mal struggled after Emily died, and how that impacted him and their relationship.

Mal's struggles were brought up, but with Rose. Mal said it was "none of Jake's damn business," but it largely impacted the remainder of Jake childhood and into his adulthood.

For example when Jake's juvie records were brought up, Jake said "I was the product of an unstable homelife. I had a terrible father." While he said it as a joke, it does ring somewhat true.

It's also the main reason for most of Jake's insecurities about himself.

Another republic of doyle fan!! It's my favourite thing ever. I'm trying to write some fics for it, though my commitment could do with some work. I'm gonna try and post some stuff about it on here, so if you want to be moots that'd be cool.
