I actually took a series of photos while I was working yesterday so I could remember what I actually did myself, because again, still getting comfortable with pastels. “Alive” Pastel portrait of @kehlani. Approximately 8 hours. I’ve been listening to a lot of her songs lately. We just seem to have a lot in common: issues with our mom, bisexuality, falling too hard, building our confidence, etc. So I just felt so inspired to draw her. And it’s so fitting because I’ve been very frustrated with my progress with learning pastel. In class, I just didn’t seem to get it. This is the first pastel piece I’ve actually attempted since class ended so it’s been about 2 months. It was good to take a break and get over my anxiety. Today, I took what I had learned but I also just painted, doing what felt right and not using a checklist. I am so happy with the result. It’s definitely my best pastel piece by far and I hope I can grow to be a better pastel artist and a better artist in general. Also thank you Kehlani for your music. “Pink Diamond’s Mural Actualized”. Digital Painting in Photoshop mainly using Kyle Webster’s Impressionism Brush Pack. I finally broke through my art block and finished a fanart of Pink Diamond! 💖 I downloaded a ton of new brushes and I got so overwhelmed with how and which ones to use so I kept redrawing this piece over and over. 🙌🏻 I finally landed on a faux pastel style and I’m actually super happy with how it turned out. Especially because I’ve been struggling with using chalk pastels so much. I know doing it digitally is kind of cheating, but I think I have some better ideas how to use them. (At least I hope so. 🙃) Regardless of art style, I am absolutely in love with Pink Diamond’s design from Steven Universe. Ever since A Pale Rose, I’ve just been dying to draw her. I actually dropped some other drawings I was working on to do this one I was so excited. 😆 The hardest thing about drawing characters/people in general is figuring out how to pose them, so I figured I’d recreate the Pink Diamond mural with a few adjustments to make it seem more realistic. (If you swipe I have a side by side of my drawing and the original mural.) I had so much fun with this and experimenting with the color scheme and everything. And if you don’t count the redraws, this piece only took me about 5 hours which is pretty fast for a color piece for me!
