I read Christie's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" because Agatha Christie Wiki told me it had a protagonist who used to be in the Navy and I wanted to see how Christie wrote them re: status and interactions in society since I want to write Malcolm as one.

Hilariously, I don't think one could invent an ex-naval character who was more different from Malcolm in all possible aspects. Absolutely zero research done, but a fun book. (It has less mentions of Navy than Heated Rivalry has hockey, so literally useless for Malcolm purposes.)

back watching "Agatha Christie's Poirot", one of my childhood comfort shows, and Of Course there needs to be a Tuckerreed Poirot AU! they all could work so brilliantly as Poirot characters. Malcolm as an old Navy Guy who's Of Course a suspect because of his detached manner and frankly deadly qualifications but Fear Not Poirot will discover the true culprit!

Trip will make a great American Character in a Christie Novel TM. Hoshi and T'Pol might have a shady past but they're actually just lesbians. idk I can see it so well probably because of saintzenni's Danse Macabre series and also because my brain will see tuckerreed and t'poshi wherever it wishes to see it

to elaborate on this midnight idea:

I feel like I'd want to strike a middle ground between the song's "he did it as a gag" and those fics where Malcolm is already confident and experienced and sort of indulgent about Trip's incredulity. for this idea, I was thinking more that this is the first time Malcolm tries out drag but they do it respectfully. I can totally imagining it being a group effort, between sewing the costume and finding the props and the make-up (my hc is that Hoshi's not at all a make-up expert and Travis is the best of them all; he also was the best of his siblings, sometimes boomer teenagers have nothing to do. T'Pol can do Vulcan make-up but nobody thought to ask her). so they maybe come up with an idea during some drinking game but a lot of time and preparation goes into it, and it's not just a gag dare. Trip possibly helps them synthesusing correct materials for the wig or what not and then he sees the end result and his jaw drops.

cue embarrassed masturbation sessions and Trip keeping staring at Malcolm while Malcolm of course thinks that with that little experiment he'd ruined the friendship with his cishet bestie forever and he should have known Trip would be weirded out by seeing the fearsome security officer with lipstick and tights, good thing the captain wasn't there, oh god the captain who cares about the captain Trip can't even hold a proper conversation with him now--
