βFrom the age of fifteen,β wrote Brooks by way of preface, βI was pursued by lesbians and I was strongly attracted by them, but not much sexually. By the time I got to Hollywood, everyone thought I was a lesbian. In 1928 when I met Garbo at Alice Glazerβs, we sat facing each other closely across narrow breakfast table. Her gaze was so intense and so eloquent that I left after an hour although I had intended to spend the afternoon.β They only met a few times, she told film writer John Kobal, adding offhandedly: βShe made a pass at me.β She claimed they spent a night together, and that Garbo had been both charming and tender. If so, it was not repeated.
