I enjoy posting articles to things that people said couldn’t happen, I won’t lie.
One big issue with EVs in general is the slow turn around time. Range is fine, but refuel takes way too long. Sure they’ve got comparable range to a tank of gas, but my tank of gas takes about 3 minutes to “recharge.” But it takes hours for electric cars to recharge from empty.
Hopefully we can fix this soon. Part of me wanted to do research in this area as my masters/PhD work but rn that’s not likely
Good point, but largely irrelevant for personal/private aircraft.
Sure, improvements are welcome to batteries, but it’s a private aircraft, it sits and waits to be used. And when it does get used, it’s usually sitting at its temporary destination long enough to recharge.
If you’re refueling to make another leg of your journey I can imagine it’s frustrating, but, this isn’t the type of aircraft you take on long trips.
Honestly, 200 an hour vs 1,000 an hour ends any debate. That’s enough savings to make everyone prefer it and not mind waiting to recharge.. along with benefits like quieter, less moving parts, etc.
Guys guys…. When did we all forget the best thing about batteries?
If the batteries on the plane are low… just swap the battery out for a fully charged one. Would only take a couple minutes. And the flat battery can be set aside to recharge. This method would be highly beneficial for aircraft. And the charge time wouldn’t affect Flight schedules. It would actually make “recharging” faster. You can take off while the battery pack u just used up is sitting safely in the recharging station.
And i know that might come to some expense, but if the batteries are standardized through all aircraft then it would be commercially viable to use this method.
I didn’t forget about this, after all, it’s Tesla’s solution. But the battery is heavily integrated into the fuselage to spread the weight out. Additionally, it costs 250k to replace, which is actually cheaper maintenance than normal aircraft but still a complex procedure.
The company says aluminum-air batteries will be the next step. Maybe then it will be powerful enough to be housed in a more central and replaceable package.
Also, I overlooked a stat on their wiki, 1 hour of flight time is recharged in a half hour. It’s no big deal.
