Event :   ☆  Varian’s  birthday  is  on  03 / 24!!  By  default,  threads  &&  asks  will  assume  this  is  his  first  birthday  after  the  events  of  the  show,  &&  he’s  turning  17.  Asks  &&  threads  to  do  with  this  will  have  priority  in  responses,  &&  will  be  accepted  through  the  end  of  March.

Cassandra jumped a bit at being snuck up on, but to her credit, she didn’t pull a blade on him like she might have used to. Instead, she just turned to face him. “Oh, Varian.”

Awkward silence. How on Earth was she supposed to start this conversation? Glad you’re doing okay despite every attempt I made to change that? Oh, sure. That sounded sincere. At least he had approached her first. It suggested he wasn’t completely terrified of her.

“…it’s good to see you again.” She cringed the second it left her mouth, immediately wanting to start over. People skills were never her strong suit. “–Sorry. About, you know. Everything.”

He  cringed  a  little  bit,  too.  Oh  yes,  it  was  just  as  awkward,  uncomfortable,  &&  painful  to  hear  as  it  was  to  say;  good  to  know.  Hand  would  tap  against  his  hip,  wanting  to  reach  out  to  her  to  offer  comfort,  but  not  sure  if  it’d  be  welcomed.

❝I  was  looking  all  over  for  you.  I  was  worried  you’d  left.❞  It  was  a  temptation  he’d  felt  a  hundred  thousand  times,  only  he  didn’t  think  she  had  the  same  sense  of  obligation  to  stay.

He  thought  of  some  of  the  same  things  she  was  probably  thinking  about.  Blade  swinging  towards  him,  anger  that  filled  up  the  whole  tower,  kidnapping  &&  manipulating  him.  Turned  out  that  killing  him  had  never  been  on  her  agenda,  but  he  hadn’t  known  that  at  the  time,  &&  it  had  been  a  terrifying  ordeal.  It  gave  him  a  new  perspective  on  certain  things

❝I’m  not  angry.  I  came  to  check  on  you❞

“Wh— Why would I have any experience with girls?” Come on, Cassandra, he doesn’t know, there’s no way he means it like that, calm down. “What about Eugene? He had plenty of experience even before meeting Rapunzel—” And then she remembered the one non-Rapunzel girl he’d dated that she had met. “—You know what, nevermind, don’t ask Eugene. I’ll help.”

❝What,  really??  You  will??❞

The  relief  was  immediate  &&  real.  Immediately  Varian  got  excited,  all  but  bouncing  in  place  to  keep  from  doing  a  fist  pump.  Would  a  fist  pump  be  all  that  rude  in  this  situation??  Best  to  air  on  the  side  of  caution,  since  she  was  being  so  nice  as  to  help  him.

&&  no,  he  actually  didn’t  mean  the  comment  about  her  being  good  with  girls  like  that.  He  had  no  idea;  remark  had  been  friendly  teasing  if  anything,  a  clever  youth  but  not  worldly  enough  to  realize  her  preferences  lay  outside  of  men.  But  because  he  didn’t  know  the  significance,  he  didn’t  think  to  respond  to  her  question  with  an  actual  comment.

❝Yes!!  Thank  you!!  Okay,  so  I’ve  been  getting  these  love  notes,  come  here  &&  I’ll  show  you.❞

❝Wait,  I—❞  Too  late.  She  was  already  jogging  quickly  away,  presumably  to  avoid  any  further  discussion  or  questions.  Not  like  he  could  exactly  blame  her,  but,  well...  That  did  sort  of  leave  him  to  stand  with  his  hands  in  his  pockets,  doing  exactly  nothing  while  he  watched  her  circle  the  track.

They  had  that  focused  look  on  their  face,  too,  like  they  were  still  thinking  it  over,  too.  Kind  of  seemed  like  there  was  no  simple  answer  where  they  were  concerned,  in  any  part  of  their  life,  no  matter  how  much  it  seemed  like  they  really  just  wanted  to  lead  a  peaceful  existence  without  trouble.  He  might  not  know  them  incredibly  well,  but  he  was  pretty  sure  of  that  much.

Could  it  be  more  obvious  just  how  bad  he  was  with  social  situations??

                Ellery lets out a small huff, her hands shuffling and turning off the tractor, before she jumps off the machine. Her boots press into the soil, leaving behind marks as she walks towards the other.

                She runs a hand through her bangs, before tossing her blue braids over her shoulders. “Fix it?” Ellery questions, looking from the boy to the scorch marks left behind.

          Hands on her hips, feet apart, she looks like an immovable object, a solid land mass amongst the crashing waves of an ocean. “You caused this, why in Yoba’s name would I let you try to help me?” 

❝Because  it  was  an  accident??  I  came  back  for  exactly  that  reason!!❞

Danger  lights  are  flashing  to  him  as  she  approaches,  but  hey,  she’s  not  threatening  to  plow  him  down  anymore,  &&  as  far  as  he’s  concerned,  that’s  a  definite  step  in  the  right  direction.

❝Besides!!  I  know  farmland  takes  a  long  time  to  recover  from  stuff  like  this.  With  the  power  of  ALCHEMY,  I  can  fix  it  a  lot  faster!!❞

So  saying,  he  would  produce  from  within  his  bag  a  vial  of  bright,  shining  blue  potion,  which  glittered  in  the  sun.  Naturally  it  was  a  solution  of  his  own  devising,  for  this  exact  purpose  when  the  same  thing  had  happened  in  Old  Corona.  It  had  never  quite  saved  his  reputation  there,  either.

I’ve  started  thinking  possibly  about  dropping  most  of  my  drafts.  I  let  a  lot  of  them  pile  up  which  keeps  people  waiting  unfairly  &&  I  fear  makes  it  seem  I’m  uninterested,  plus  it  buries  ones  that  were  actually  plotted  which  is  not  cool  to  the  people  I  plotted  them  with.

Plus,  I’ve  totally  lost  my  place  on  most  of  my  messages  because  my  mentality  keeps  drifting  to  drafts  first,  so  relationships  I  proposed  or  really  wanted  to  plot  also  fall  by  the  wayside,  making  me  seem  uninterested.  Maybe  a  kind  of  soft  reboot  is  in  order??

For  the  record,  by  the  way,  whatever  it  was  that  we  were  going  to  plot  or  talk  about,  I’m  definitely  still  interested.  I’m  just  a  silly  human  is  all.

I  know  they  just  gave  him  this  ability  because  it’s  a  musical  show  &&  they  were  having  a  musical  number,  but  I’m  unlikely  to  ever  let  anybody  forget  Varian  can  play  the  piano.

— ⚡ Okay, that didn’t work. After this, she was gonna start working on her acting. If Angry could cross her arms, she would. “Alright relax. We can either go look for it or you can come up with something.” A faint groan escaped her throat. One mess up and you’re nagged for life. “If those don’t work, there always Xavier to help.”

Proud  alchemist  would  give  a  loud  groan,  knowing  how  completely  useless  it  would  be  to  argue  with  her,  yet  wanting  to  argue  with  her  anyway.  How  frustrating!!  She  really  screwed  this  one  up,  &&  he  intended  to  never  let  her  forget  it!!

❝I’m  not  going  to  go  comb  the  forest  for  it.  Come  inside  with  me,  I  can  saw  the  cuffs  off.❞

Though  his  age  can  vary  a  bit  during  his  main  verse,  I’m  assuming  that  any  threads  for  Varian’s  birthday  this  year  will  by  default  be  his  first  birthday  after  the  show  ends.  During  S1,  he’s  fourteen,  so  in  S3,  he’s  sixteen,  so  that  means  he’s  turning  17  this  year.  Time  really  flies,  right??  He’s  still  very  childish  in  many  ways,  though,  especially  since  his  development  during  those  two  years  took  a  sort  of  backseat.

Additionally,  his  fifteenth  was  spent  in  his  stay  in  prison,  &&  the  other  I  think  was  not  really  acknowledged  as  he  didn’t  bring  it  up  &&  was  being  quite  reclusive  at  the  time,  so  he’s  extremely  excited  to  get  to  spend  this  one  with  friends  &&  family.

Must  be  a  little  bird  that  passed  on  that  Varian’s  birthday  was  coming  up.  Prior  to  the  whole  𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻𝔂𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰  incident,  he’d  have  excitedly  told  everybody  that  it  was  soon,  in  every  way  from  hint——dropping  to  simply  proclaiming  it  to  whomever  would  listen.  Now  that  all  that  had  happened,  he  really  didn’t  think  anybody  would  want  to  hear  it,  &&  he  didn’t  exactly  want  to  be  the  one  to  say  so,  either.

The  last  two  birthdays,  after  all,  had  not  been  so  successful.  One  had  even  been  spent  in  prison.

But  that  didn’t  mean  he  wasn’t  excited  about  it,  or  that  he  didn’t  want  people  to  know  &&  acknowledge  it  &&  celebrate  it  with  him,  so  when  Eugene  asked  him  how  old  he’d  be,  excitement  bubbled  up  like  a  well  from  within  him,  visibly  surprised  &&  thrilled  someone  else  had  even  known.

❝Seventeen!!  It’s  near  the  end  of  the  month.  I  don’t  know  what  I  should  do  to  celebrate  it,  yet.❞

Weary  eyes  would  blink  against  the  sudden  bright  light  as  the  door  opened,  blurry  &&  dizzy.  Nothing  could  really  be  made  out  to  him  except  the  form  of  what  he  could  only  assume  was  his  captor,  come  back  for  more.  How  long  had  he  been  here??  What  had  he  done  in  that  span  of  time??  Lost  in  his  own  mind  as  he  was,  he  didn’t  know,  except  that  his  alchemical  prowess  had  been  called  upon  more  than  once,  &&  so  he  could  only  assume  that  was  the  purpose  of  his  imprisonment.

He  had  been  imprisoned  before,  but  somehow  it  was  even  worse  this  time.  Through  nothing  of  his  own  doing,  he  was  trapped,  held  down,  in  such  pain  that  it  pulsed  through  his  body  with  each  heartbeat.  But  no,  that  was  not  the  form  that  had  dragged  him  from  this  room  time  &&  time  now.  It  was  FAMILIAR  in  a  different  way.

As  soon  as  Varian  saw  his  friend,  he  lifted  a  hand  to  wave  at  her,  grinning  broadly.  He  looked  just  about  as  happy  as  she’d  ever  seen  him,  surrounded  by  machinery  &&  chemicals  &&  inventions  of  all  kinds;  the  place  was  its  own  kind  of  organized  chaos,  one  navigable  only  to  its  freckled  inhabitant.  Setting  down  the  tools  he  had  been  holding,  he  hurried  to  meet  her.  This  entailed  sliding  down  a  ladder  from  a  second——level  scaffolding  he  had  built  himself.

❝Rapunzel,  hey!!  Everything  here  is  great,  I  couldn’t  ask  for  more.  There’s  room  for  all  my  projects  &&  enough  materials  for  everything  I  could  ever  want  to  build.  Come  here,  do  you  want  to  see  what  I’m  working  on??❞ 

Impatience was practically spelled upon her forehead as she looked at him. Lips pursed, foot tapping … Genuinely insulted! The nerve! The gall! The ineptitude! –

Wait did he say make the air glitter around her?

Dense lashes flutter as she gives a low hum in thought. Head beginning to nod back and forth as she toyed with the idea in her head. That DOES sound rather nice … And definitely something with befitting grandeur for moi.

“WEEELLL I suppose that DOES sound pretty good,” she’d begin to admit. A small bounce in her place, “alright! Just make sure you keep this thing from BLOWING UP constantly and I’ll take it.”

Oh  thank  goodness  she  was  calming  down.  Seeing  the  flames  of  her  infamous  anger  begin  to  temper,  he  could  just  about  swoon  with  the  wave  of  relief  that  overcame  him.

❝Of——  of  course!!  Yes  ma’am!!  I  don’t  intend  for  this  to  get  anywhere  near  you  until  I  am  one  hundred  percent  confident  that  it  is  safe.  I  really  admire  you  &&  your  work!!❞

Which  meant  he  had  to  be  as  careful  as  possible  that  this  perfume  would  be  perfect  when  he  presented  it  to  her.  Thoughtfully,  he  sniffed,  &&  sure  enough,  the  air  smelled  like  vanilla  cake,  exactly  like  it  was  supposed  to,  albeit  without  the  accompanying  explosion.

❝Actually,  that  reminds  me...  while  you’re  in  here,  what  do  you  think  of  the  smell??❞

I’ll  have  to  remember  to  add  this  to  my  doc  at  some  point,  but  I  know  the  banners  I  use  can  cause  issues  with  blockquote  in  your  reply.  Going  into  HTML  to  fix  it  can  be  a  bit  of  a  pain,  so  I  don’t  mind  at  all  if  you  remove  them  to  get  rid  of  the  issue  when  replying!!  They  are  completely  a  personal  aesthetic  choice  &&  I  don’t  take  any  offense  if  it’s  easier  to  remove  them.
