"Mooncussing is a part of the folklore of Cape Cod. A band of land based pirates would inhabit the shores of Cape Cod on certain winter evenings. These robbers, often on horses, are said to have decoyed vessels onto the rocks and beaches in the darkest of nights by means of large lanterns and bon fires, luring ships ashore and plundering them of everything, putting the sailors to death, leaving the ships stripped and gutted. Mooncussing became a way of life for this type of pirate from as far south as Barbados to as far north as Cape Cod."
