A dark, foggy night.
when you grow but the walls around you stay the same
Welcome to Possum Springs.
âI wanted to be a famous author. Â Literature has been my passion since childhood. Â But whenever you have a passion, itâs so easy to convince yourself that youâre not good at it. Â Because you read all these fantastic authors. Â And then you try to write yourself, and you learn how difficult it can be to write a single perfect sentence. Â Itâs so much work to be happy with what youâve written. Â And sometimes you choose life. Â Weâre in Paris, itâs sunny, I have wonderful friends, maybe I should just be enjoying these things instead of thinking about how to package and share them. Â So I got a job in communications. Â And I mainly just wrote for my own enjoyment: poems, notes, journals. Â But I never shared a thing. Â Not a single page. Â With anyone. Â But last year I wrote a story. Â A complete story. Â A real story. Â With two characters, a beginning, and an end. Â I thought: âMaybe itâs not too bad. Â We must test. Â Maybe this is the moment.â Â So a few months ago I submitted it to a contest in my town. Â Itâs just a small town. Â And just a very little contest. Â But this morning I got the email. Â I won the prize. Â And Iâm just so happy. Â This weekend Iâm going to the beach with my family. Â I canât wait to tell my mother. Â I canât believe I get to say these words, the greatest words: âI will be published.ââ (Paris, France)

âmy battery is low and itâs getting darkâ is so hauntingly human, so crushingly lonely. I canât articulate the deep, profound ache that sentence evokes. Itâs acceptance and defeat and terror and sadness all at once, all from one tiny machine we asked to explore the stars for us.
âWe had dorm rooms next to each other freshman year. Â We mainly just played a lot of board games: Risk, Scrabble, Scattergories, a Trivial Pursuit game from the 1980âs, which everyone sucked at. Â But we became best friends, and the next year decided to get a house together. Â Thatâs when things started to get tense. Â We began sitting closer together. Â We were touching more. Â Weâd play with each otherâs hands. Â Never holding hands, but playing with hands. Â And weâd even fall asleep in the same bed together. Â There was a time that she told me goodnight, and I swear I felt her brush my lips, but by the time I opened my eyes she was out of the room. Â Neither of us had ever dated a woman. Â And I was terrified to try anything. Â We were such good friends. Â There was always this fear that if I voiced the desire, it would ruin our friendship. Â But one night we were out for drinks at a hotel where Al Capone used to stay. Â I was feeling pretty drunk, so I leaned over and said: âSometimes I feel like I want to kiss you.â Â And she replied: âSometimes I do too.â Â I didnât say a thing. Â I wasnât even sure that Iâd heard her correctly. Â I just kept thinking: âOh my God, itâs happening. Â Itâs happening.â Â Then once we finished our drinks, and started walking home, I stopped her in front of a bridge. Â I said: âShall we do it here?â Â It was December 12th, 2002. Â And even though we got married five years ago, thatâs the day we celebrate as our anniversary.â
