What to do when you first decide to start practicing witchcraft
1) GET A NOTEBOOK
⢠Make a list of things to research
⢠Things like types of witchcraft, divination types, herb correspondences, crystal correspondences, moon phases, holidays, etc.
2) START AT SQUARE ONE
⢠Pick the first thing on your list and research it, in detail. You dont have to do this all in one sitting. Tumblr is a wonderful resource but I recommend fact checking as well
⢠Take notes on your research. If itâs something you think youâll need to remember or will be useful to you later in your practice, write it down.
⢠Keep going. Youâll likely come up with more things youâre curious about - put them on the list too. When it feels right, take a break from researching and put some of the things youâve learned to use.Â
3) DONâT CHOOSE A FAITH RIGHT AWAY
⢠Unless you are already religious, donât listen to anyone who says you cant practice without a faith
⢠When I first started, I was under the impression that you had to be Wiccan to be a witch. And I hated every minute of it. So I quit witchcraft for a while, until I found the faith I was most comfortable in
4) THINGS YOU 100% SHOULD RESEARCH
⢠Types of witchcraft: you donât have to find a label to put yourself in, but one type in particular may speak to you. You may find a path youâre really interested in, and you should follow it.
⢠Types of divination: being able to divine is one of the most important aspects of witchcraft. Pick something you think youâd be interested in, like tarot cards, runes, tea leaves, a pendulum, or a crystal ball. Then practice it. The apps Labyrinthos Academy and Golden Thread are great for learning tarot.
⢠Correspondences: use whatever types of materials you have at your disposal and research their magical correspondences. Some of the most useful things in your practice could be something you use every day.
⢠CLOSED PRACTICES: definitely figure out which types of witchcraft you can practice and those you cant. As a white woman, I understand the appeal of some practices, but we must be respectful of those trying to preserve their cultures.
5) HAVE AT IT
⢠Do your thing, witch. Once you feel satisfied in your research and you feel confident enough, try performing a simple spell or making a sigil. Put all that hard work to good use.Â
