Okay, I've finished reading Saezuru's 64th chapter. Just a very short, hopefully not spoilery thought:
DOUMEKI, YOU'VE GOT THE BRASSIEST BRASS BALLS OF ALL TIME AND I WANT TO BE AS BRAVE AS YOU WHEN I GROW UP.
Also, in spite of all his flaws, he has female friends. As in, friends-friends. Because he's aware that women are people. Not many male characters in yakuza manga are. That's also very telling.

Okay, I tend to think that studies are just studies and, well, not as worthy as original art and debatably not posting material at all, BUT THIS MOTHERFUCKER HAS TAKEN HALF A MILLION HOURS TO MAKE and I need some kind of reward.
In the improbable case any of you stops appreciating the crazy (and I do mean crazy) amount of talent STARember has been gifted with and worked hard to hone, I dare you to copy one of their pics. The amount of detail in the shading is mind-blowing, not to speak about the beauty of the forms and the interesting perspective. And the composition. And, well, everything. Crazy, I tell you.
In case anyone is curious about the process, here are some more pics:
This is the finished pencil. At the beginning it was fast to do, but then I realized the head was not good and the hand was way to big. Then way too small. Long story short: it took forever to correct it.
Then I used ink and watercolours to lower the lights and add some red so that the texture of the soft pastels wouldn't leave whites (light greys, the paper is already toned) behind.
Is this paper watercolour paper? Ha, ha, nope. Did I care? Ha, ha, nope. I never do. Therefore, the many, many creases because I applied many, many, many layers. I even put some shimmering/pearlescent watercolour to good measure, but this pic was taken after the second or the third layer, so it's not there yet.
And then, I added the light and deepened the shadows with carbon pencil (black) and soft pastels (red and white). It also took a fucking while because I had to correct the sleeve and fix the many disasters I caused while doing the hand.
And, finally, the whole thing. And I managed to do this while I had STARember's pic in front of me, HOW THE HELL DID THIS INCREDIBLE ARTIST MANAGE TO CREATE THE ORIGINAL PIC FROM THIN AIR??!!
I can't even.
So, I was trying to make my (very, very belated) Christmas cards and this happened. Not exactly the posture that I was envisioning them in, but that's watercolour for you. In my defense, this is tiny and it was still wet when I started on them.
It's only now that I realize that's pretty much a North European forest, but I guess that China is huge and diverse and they must also have this kind of landscape somewhere?
Okay, so I spent three days working on a pic, using expensive paper and stuff, but then I decided I hated how it looked, so redid it in like twenty minutes with lousy drawing paper. Which I then soaked because I was using watercolour. The paper didn't like that. I didn't particularly care for its opinion.
Long story short, here's the quick, low quality version of a fox!Hua Cheng and a butterfly. Or that's what I tell myself, it could be any fox and any butterfly because, man, it's apparently a thing. But I did it with Hua Cheng in mind because that's my head right now.
In case you're wondering, here's the previous pic:
I hate it because it looks overworked and stilted and shit, but I can still admit that it's not so terrible, taking into account I didn't use a reference.

all the photos of him are like this, I love that this guy understood he had been born with the face of a wizard or axe murderer and just leaned fully into it
Okay, do you remember this negative line drawing I wasn't really happy with? I actually decided to keep on working on it, and now I'm, at the very least, amazed at the fact that I did this. Without looking at references or anything (aside from my own hands holding a toothpick and my face in the mirror with a flashlight under my chin). I actually wasn't aware I knew how to do metal (last time I checked, I didn't) or the subtle creases in a fabric (I definitely sucked at that) and now, magically, it kind of worked??
So now I'm superhappy (even if a part of me is cringing at the certain level of tackiness, but fuck that) because I entered this part of the project with zero expectatives of triumph, I guess, and now I'm impressed with my progress.
The quality of the image is not the best because it was a bit of a pain to get this effect. I painted this with soft pastels (let's remember it was a cardboard (the backing of a drawing block, actually) painted with Chinese ink and cyanotype) and to get the nice glow of light pastels you need to take the pic at an angle. Same with silver ink. That means that the pic is going to look deformed by perspective and you have to fix that on Photoshop, but that's the only way to get the glowing effect and I did want the glowing effect.
Here are some pics to illustrate what I'm saying:
This above is what the drawing actually looks like with natural light coming from everywhere at once.
And here below is what the drawing looks like with artificial light coming from an angle:
Therefore, there are some areas ouf of focus and the pixels have been stretched within an inch of their lives to fix de perspective. But still, I think it was worth it.
I love this so hard...
On an unrelated note, but not really, because this author is very much into it: APPARENTLY MOTHLIAN IS A THING AND I CAN'T EVEN. OMG. Check this artist's Tumblr for more about Hualian as moths. You won't regret it. I mean, A MOTH KING. You totally won't regret it.
Okay, this looked like a fantastic idea in my head, very cool and stuff. Unfortunately, reality has a way of slapping me in the face when I try to take to paper what I have in my mind. I've been trying to convince myself to go and vectorize it because it will look better if I make the lines less wonky and add some effects, but the thing is that I don't want to work with the computer on this. I'm fed up with working with the computer, I want to get my hands dirty, dammit.
So here's a negative line Hua Cheng. The background is actually a wet cyanotype that I messed up with sodium carbonate, because why not (I love the color and I had some old cyanotype solution mixed that I had to throw away anyway), the black is Chinese ink and the lines are actually silver gel pen that looks white because it's really hard to take pics of silver ink, especially of flat objetcs.
And here's a closeup because, again, why not.
I might try to colour it (God knows how), I'll keep you posted.
Hmmm... okay, so it happened again. This was supposed to be a quick study for another pic where the atmosphere was actually the main character and the guys were supposed to be painted without pencil, just with a few strokes; but for that to work, I needed to know where to place those fews strokes (experience tells me that not exactly where I thought), therefore the study. And, as usually, I ended up running with it. What can I say, I just love the guys.
Hua Cheng's clothes flowed much more naturally in the pencil sketch and his arms made more sense, but that's the price of colouring with watercolour when you don't know what you are doing.
I'm happy with the general vibe, though. Hope you like it.

Omg, this artist is a genius. Amazingly cinematic storytelling and expressivity and humour and everything in the same package. I'm in awe. If someone needs help understanding their comics in Spanish, please, let me know, because the slang is precious and I actually laughed out loud more than once reading their stuff. Awesome.
I wanted to make a quick study of people on boats for another pic I'm planning and... well, this happened. I half-assed an attempt at lighting with the shadow of the umbrella, but it wasn't as successful as I indended. Also, the paper is kind of lousy and I couldn't erase the pencil and that's why it looks so dirty on certain areas.
And, well, because I kind of liked XL's peaceful expression, here's a close up:
I took the pics with my phone and its camera sucks donkey balls, so forgive the quality.
Damn, hualian invented love.
I'm blaming this on this fandom's kindness, you're all incredibly nice and encouraging, it makes people to want to draw more. I was only doing experiments with pastels, seeing if I could use water on them to make them watercolour-y so that the grey of the paper disappeared, but then I decided that I actually liked the texture of the pastel, so I put more dry soft pastel and charcoal on top of it. At some point, parts of the paper gave up because it's, once again, the back of some youghurt packaging, so the loose fibers of the cardboard do some strange things on the nose, lips and chin, but that's life.
I was only playing around, so I didn't put much effort in volume or the point of view, and the earring looks like a hot pepper instead of jewlery, but I actually like the gritty texture. I love working with my hands, dammit.
So, I bought myself some Chinese supplies. Inks and brushes, mainly.
I wanted to try them out and, well, this happened.
I'm extremely shabby, so this is actually a piece of the paper they put in the packages to protect the wares, therefore the creases.
I actually bought some xuan paper, too, I'm not only using garbage to paint *all* the time (although the pic of the previous post was drawn on the packaging of some yoghurt) so this also happened because it's like I'm always drawing Xie Lian and I don't think he's sold separatedly, so here's Hua Cheng. It's like they are looking for each other or something.
I'm still terrible at this style, but I'll keep on working until I'm not.

I'm not sure what possessed me to do this. I bought some acrylic markers and wanted to try them out. I somehow ended up using them as if they were regular paint and not markers, which was a bit of a pain to manage, but I can't get a good shading on the skin, gradation on the sky or rippling effects without blending, not with so few colors.
So, here's Xie Lian after having ended up in a lake, pretty much unintentionally, as is his wont. He's with Hua Cheng though, even if he's not in frame, so he's actually happy and splitting his sides because even accidents are fun with Hua Cheng around to run commentary. Also, Xie Lian knows he'll keep him warm.
It's been the longest time since I last posted anything online. But it also has been the longest time since I just sketched something I wanted to sketch, without pressure, about a fandom I was currently in love with, just because I wanted to do it. I usually obsess about not being good enough, so I make a lot of studies, but that's not creating, that's learning and copying, which is fun, but I had missed drawing what I had in my head.
So, this is Xie Lian after he had his head bashed in (amongst other things), still refusing to change and fucking determined not to. I didn't want to draw him furious, even if he was at the time, because I wanted his inner strength to be more subtle in its manifestation.
Not perfect, but still, quite better than what I used to be able to do without references. I hope to be able to draw the complete colour pic sometime.
