Did everyone justâŚ. forget how to create, all of a sudden? Disney pumping out the fourth remake in a row? Movies are like 70% sequels? Stories in games being just bad if they exist at all? Havenât had a book get hyped in like half a decade? Are we okay? Whatâs going on?
But when was this fabled time when people were âcreatingâ in the way you want them to? Nearly all of Disneyâs full-length movies are based on other stories. Hell, nearly all of Shakespeareâs plays are based on other stories. You think movies are all sequels now? You should have seen it during the studio system days. They would literally constantly remake the same movie, because since there was no way an audience could see a movie after it was out of theaters, might as well make money on remakes of movies that did it big. And you must not follow the book world much if you donât think anything is going on there.
There is more media out there now than ever before. More movies, more TV, more books. Creators have greater access to their audiences than ever before. Is some of it trash, of course? But so much of it is so glorious and inventive and bonkers and beautiful. And yes, some of that is sequels and remakes and FANFIC. And itâs wonderful.
