My son and I went for a walk in nature the other day. Anytime he sees ferns he gets SO excited and yells, "ELLIE'S FERNS mom!!". He is so cute.

The thing about love is that we don't understand or appreciate what we have until it's gone. It's human nature. We take the other person for granted. We assume they will be there for all of the highs and lows. We assume our future includes them. And one day you wake up without them and realize you aren't part of their story anymore. You are now just a past memory to that person. I think the thing about loss and pain is that we get caught up in trying to fix it. We look for every way to temporarily heal it. We get caught up trying to mend something we lost meanwhile we lose the person that meant the world to us. When you try to fix the hurt in your life from your past you lose focus on what's really important and what is present. Revenge is a painful gift. You think it will heal your soul. But you are destroying someone elses purpose along the way. Revenge is a temporary high that fades. And all that is left when revenge consumes you is a goodbye and I wish things were the way they were before. You lose the person you were before revenge. You lose your partner. You lose your family. You lose everyone and everything to pain all over again. Love lost makes pain possible. Whether it's physical death or death of yourself, your morals and personality. Do you get completely lost in your thoughts? Or do you know when to walk away?

I know pain. Pain follows me through every day since you were gone. The nightmare continues on. It's not the monsters that roam the planet that makes you scared. It's the voice within that does. That same voice that says do it to survive. The same voice that doesn't want you to fail. The same voice that doesn't want you to feel pain. That is the voice to be scared of. Because you are unstoppable with that voice. You got lost in the darkness but you looked for the light. You looked for a reason to be. You looked for a reason to heal. You looked to become a better person. You overcame the darkness and eventually found the light within. Be your person. Be your light.

It's true I've walked alone down the road of emptiness. I have felt love and lost love. I have felt happiness and wanted revenge. I tried to settle down and find a family of my own but I only have myself. I found purpose and lost hope. I lived to survive and I've survived to live. No matter how many paths we take we always feel empty. Empty of missing someone. Empty of losing sight of our dreams. Empty that we do it alone. I may be empty but I still wake up every morning to fight for the day. Fight for my existence. To fight for a life I want to live.
