Shinoa & Mika’s Recovery Process
I love Shinoa’s patience with Mika, how she’s so utterly willing to do things at his pace and wait for him to accept the team when he wants and how he wants, rather than forcing them on him. Occasionally she intervenes, but she also makes sure he’s as comfortable as possible.
I think in a relationship, be it friendship or romance, patience and understanding is a huge factor that needs to be respected, boundaries need to be respected. And Shinoa offering Mika the blood without forcing it on him, allowing him to accept it or not (even though he doesn’t) just touches me. She doesn’t pull a “Drink the blood or else,” she waits and even though he has a fit, she accepts that and moves on.
I like how the evolution of their strained relationship is developing, as I feel that as it continues to grow as it is now (because we can clearly see Mika’s shell cracking as Shinoa—a girl he’s treated quite badly—is accepting of him), it will be one of the strongest in the series. She’s killing Mika with her kindness (as John Coffee says) and her dedication to wanting things to be done his way, that it is starting to get to him, you can tell. As things are now, I truly believe Shinoa will be the one to heal Mika, just solely by how she’s going about it (and I’m not diminishing Yuu’s importance, rather I’m equating Shinoa’s to his, because yes, it is that great).
He’s either used to be commanded without an opinion of his own (Krul’s control of him) , he’s used to being yelled at or ignored until he gives something he’s doesn’t want to (Yuu unwilling to listen until Mika sucked his blood, thus giving up his humanity), or just not allowed to do things at his own pace. He’s not used to being himself in a sense that he does things at his own pace or how he wants to.
And this is why I just love this relationship between the two of them, because in the few times he’s met Shinoa, she is allowing him this.
I realize now why he is so enraged and unwilling to accept her advances. He’s not used to it. He’s not used to being treated with respect in a sense that he makes his own choices, he’s able to make choices for himself how he wants without someone intervening.
And this is not to say that people who don’t treat him like that are bad—least of all not Yuu, because that’s just Yuu’s personality.
But now he’s given an opportunity to choose something how he wants to, without having to wager something huge (ie his morality or sanity), and he doesn’t know how to react.
He most likely doesn’t trust Shinoa’s kindness, as kindness has been used against Mika in incredibly influential moments in his life. Thus, even though Shinoa is genuine in her advances, even though she’s willing to give Mika what he needs, he’s still so untrusting of her. But I think we can all agree that he is starting to improve quite greatly.
So yeah, Shinoa giving Mika space and giving him the option to choose what he wants to do at his own pace is just really amazing. And let’s not forget that they are very similar, so her treatment of him most likely comes from personal experience. It’s nice to see someone taking this root towards Mika’s recovery process, because I believe this is truly effective.
