pheromones are natural chemical messengers that are secreted by animals (remember, a human is an animal) that trigger social, behavioral, or physiologic responses in members of the same species. they act as a silent, invisible form of communication.

let's take the ant for example.

ants have different pheromones for different purposes. the queen gives off a specific pheromone to suppress the reproductive abilities of worker ants to maintain a colony's population (otherwise there would be an overpopulation). or if an ant is crushed they release a pheromone that signals to other ants to begin to swarm and attack the source of danger.

now, referring to humans, a man can typically pick up the scent of a woman's pheromones, however pheromones don't give off a scent like a flower or a pancake. they instead subconsciously influence mood, attraction, and biological responses. a man can even sense a woman's arousal, and with these specific pheromones, it can cause an increase in sexual motivation as well as a heightened perception on a woman's attractiveness.

with that being said, i had also once learned that lesbians can, in fact, ALSO sense this pheromone :p

research has shown that the way lesbian's brain processes these cues differs from that of a straight woman and resembles more of the attraction of a straight man.
