There had always been something a little different about Lara Kaplan. Something that she had first come to notice in the way her father treated her compared to any of her other siblings. While part of her had blamed her parentsβ mental and physical absence in all of their lives, something about the way he acted with her, in particular, had always seemed more personal.Β
At the age of fourteen, all of Laraβs questions were finally answered when their father ousted her motherβs affairs during a drunken rampage. The reason why he hadnβt treated Lara as his own was because she wasnβt. And no matter how much her older siblings had tried to reassure her, she couldnβt help but feel like one giant mistake.Β
Their parents had always had quite the reputation around town, known for their petty crimes and poor behavior. But now that the truth was out in the open, their fatherβs alcoholism had transformed him into even more of a monster. Which also made it difficult for her to want to spend time at home. Instead, Lara spent the majority of her free time at school, participating in extracurriculars or studying at the library.
It was there that she first caught sight of Colton Wright. While the two didnβt run in the same social circles, something about him always seemed to draw her in. Until one day, that magnetic force won. After months of silent stares and smiles in the hallway, things developed into flirtation and spending time together outside of class, and then eventually dating.Β Β
While they were quite the unconventional couple in a lot of ways, something about them worked. Like yin and yang, they were the perfect balance. But after graduation, those few years of bliss soon came to an end when Lara announced that she was leaving Salt Flats to study nursing in Austin, almost eight hours away.
Her relationship with parents had made Lara want to do and be better. To truly make something of her life and be worthy of their love and attention. Though at the end of the day, it was her older sister that was there to cheer her on, once again stepping into a motherly role, just as she had for as long as Lara could remember.Β
Although she would never admit it, school left Lara feeling stressed and overworked. She had always been one to strive for the highest possible grades, but doing so in university proved to be an entirely different ball game. While she wasnβt proud, the woman sometimes leaned on Adderall to get her through nights spent studying for those more challenging exams, though they were always followed by feelings of disappointment and regret.
Following graduation, Lara first found work at a hospital in Austin, fulfilling her dream job as an RN. Although the role wasnβt for everyone, she couldnβt help but want to be in the heart of the action, helping patients through some of the toughest diagnoses. She wanted to be the source of hope that she had always wished for.Β
As of one year ago, Lara has relocated back to Salt Flats, where she found work at her hometown hospital, Salt Flats Medical Center. Although being back in town has certainly been nice, it has also come with its own set of challenges. From family drama to past loves and temptation, Lara is quickly finding that old habits die hard.
