Silver skull vinaigrette, Europe, 1701-1900
Like pomanders, vinaigrettes could be used as a vessel to hold strong smelling substances to be sniffed should the user be passing through a particularly smelly area. At a time when miasma theories of disease – the idea that disease was carried by foul air – were dominant, carrying a vinaigrette was considered a protective measure. Vapours from a vinegar-soaked sponge in the bottom were inhaled through the small holes in the top of the ‘acorn’. If a person felt faint they could also sniff their vinaigrette and the sharp vinegar smell might shock their body into action. The other side of the vinaigrette shows a face and could act as a memento mori – a reminder of death. The skull was probably hung from a piece of cord or necklace and carried at all times.
I need to learn how to make these. Like, as soon as possible.

London-based artist Zadok Ben David created this incredible installation using 12,000 cut steel botanical specimens modeled from old textbook illustrations, each embedded in a thin layer of sand. On first encountering the sprawling array of plants they appear completely black, thus the installation’s title: Blackfield. However when viewed from the opposite side, a field of black turns into a wall of color.
so, the movie Coraline, right?
It’s a stop motion so it already took about 20 months just to film.

Printed in the late 16th century this small book from the National Library of Sweden is an example of sixfold dos-a-dos binding, where six books are conjoined into a single publication but can be read individually with the help of six perfectly placed clasps
Artatomical: 1800s Persian Anatomical Study
Here’s an elegant piece of anatomical art, straight from a 19th-century Persian anatomical study.
I love the skeletons, but I feel like the internal organs and circulatory systems are the real stars here. The artist gives them the lush feel of fresh flowers or fruit.

The bioluminescent waves of Vaadhoo Island
Doug Perrine, a marine biology photographer, has captured stunning images of bioluminescent waves, in Vaadhoo Island, Maldives. The spot holds a concentrated population of bioluminescent phytoplankton, much to the delight of photographers.
Various species of phytoplankton are known to bioluminesce, and when washed ashore by the tides, their chemical energy is turned into light energy, illuminating waves all over the world.
The biological process is ancient, natural and found around the world. If you’ve never seen it, it’s most easily observed on nice, warm beaches after dark.

how many muggle born kids showed up at hogwarts like, “i get you’re into magic and don’t get me wrong, magic is awesome, but please don’t try and tell me quills and inkwells make more sense than pencils. i realize you have an aesthetic going, but admit it’s that. admit it’s just for looks.”
