Itâs been a really long time since I played a video game with friends. Anyways, if I do now it would be with this game : Keep talking and nobody explodes. Havenât tried it yet but seems fun. This is a cooperative game where one player gets the instruction of how to defuse the bomb and the other has to defuse the bomb by listening to his colleague. Communication if of the essence since there are many bombs and to find the right instructions the bomb itself has to be described.

Treasure adventure game is a free metroidvania. You hunt for treasures going from an island to the next. The treasures serve as your upgrades and let you go explore more of the game. Itâs really fun and thereâs a really good twist at the end that manage to be surprising and heartwarming at the same time.
For best reading experience, launch the theme before proceeding.

How come no one is ever talking about this game ?
(I actually already made a review for it on another #LoveIndies...but itâs not enough)
My pick for today is a Valley Without Wind 2. Chris park, Arcen Games, become known thanks to his strategy game AI War. Then he made a Valley without wind that was a very addicting procedurally generated metroidvania but got very mixed reviews. Some saying it was addictive for the sake of being addictive without real substance (why we never hear this kind of comment for very successful addictive commercial games ?).
So the dev took all the critics and actually made a second game from scratch. And it is the game I dreamed of. Itâs a mix of platforming with turn based strategy. Every turn, you choose to either move your allies on a new tile or make them work where they are. This way youâre able to generate resources like food (to maintain everyone and keep a good morale) or scrap (thatâll be used to build structures that get you more resources or houses more allies).
In the center of the map lies the lair of the boss. Itâs also where you start. Itâs implied that before the beginning of the game you gained the trust of the enemy and right when you got the power of immortality you betray him in order to fight for the oppressed humans
When youâve done everything you want on the map, youâll want to end your turn. To do that you must chose a tile you want to âliberateâ. Youâll see which one will be free if you succeed. Now the game switch to an action platformer. With a set of spells chosen before hand, you must go the end of the level in order to liberate it from the wind. You can fight enemies or just sneak past them. But like in the first Valley, you only regain health when killing enemies. You can also enter special windmill levels that give you upgrades to your skills or character.
The strategic element of the game is enhanced by the platformer element, and the other way around. You must also be careful of waves of enemies coming from the bossâ lair (only your allies can fight them). And then the boss itself that can definitely destroy your buildings.
How come nobody talks about this ? Itâs a perfect mix of action and strategy !

Comment ça se fait que personne ne parle de ce jeu ?
There was a time where indie wasnât still a thing. It wasnât possible to make a game on your own or with a small team. But then things changed a bit...Among others there was this guy named Daisuke âPixelâ Amaya who began making games on his free time. He made this game : Doukutsu Monogatari or Cave Story. It was in japanese, but soon after translated in english. It was (and still is) a freeware.
I remember talking about this game, people assumed it was some kind of artsy bs. But little by little they understood that this was a masterpiece. There was a fun gameplay full of action, an engaging story and even multiple endings. Truly this was a gem, and it was made by a single guy.
This game then became immensely popular, it was the more well known indie game. People began to realise that games made independently could be as fun as big budget ones. Unfortunately a company wanted to take advantage of that and bought the rights to this game, and with the help of the developer sold (yes sold a game that was previously free) an upgraded version of the game. I donât want to name this company since it seems that âPixelâ had quite a negative experience with them. But the result is that now we can see lots of indie games that are also being sold alongside other big budget games.
...
And then there was Minecraft that completely annihilated the competition.
Yeah, I know, they are the one holding this #LoveIndies challenge, itâs even the third year. However, I still love every game that they did. So thatâs enough to make them my favourite studio.
I first heard about them when I got sunless sea in some Humble Bundle. I thought it was some kind of survival horror in which you were the captain of a boat. Well...itâs almost that. Itâs just that it comes with loads and loads of text. I first skipped the character creation but still read the advice book. Then I had remorse and wanted to go back to make my character...and it didnât want to go past the profile Image selection.
So my first experience with them was quite bad. But itâs in this kind of situation, when you expect nothing, or even expect something bad that youâre more prone to being pleasantly surprised. So I began another character, I went to the process of creating a past for him. Then I was ready to explore the unterzee. The world is really rich, thereâs a lot of lore underlying every tidbit of text. Not only that, it can also become quite addicting. I found it was a strange thing that something so verbose, could also be addicting. With each quest completed, you get rewarded with items but also a bit of story. You can then sell the items, or keep them to use them in another quest. Itâs that mix of loads of items and text that make this game so enjoyable. I still prefer sunless sea than undertale (to be fair I went to undertale expecting the next messiah of video games...so that may explain that).
Sunless sea is not the only game they made. In fact it is set in the same universe as their browser game Fallen London. Itâs just as fun, except you donât get to navigate the unterzee in a boat (well not in the same manner). Itâs mostly text. They are the master of the choose your own adventure book, except itâs a video game. Sunless skies is even better and prettier (Fallen london went under the neath because of the bats, but in sunless skies it escape to skies...I also learnt the true nature of the master of the bazaar...In a quite weird way to be spoiled about another game).
And thatâs not all ! Weather Factory was also made possible by this company. This time they made Cultist Simulator which also have loads of words and items, except itâs a card game...not like any other card game.
All these games are fun, but kinda hard to get into first. Video games made us expect more things to see, and less to read. I heard a lot the âshow donât tellâ, but those are almost like âtell donât showâ. And it still works !

My pick for day 7 of LoveIndies challenge: Indie game that made you laugh the most is (itâs a long one...) :
Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald : A whirlwind heist
I have a confession to make : I donât usually laugh a lot (even a little) when Iâm playing or watching something. Iâm more prone to laughing when Iâm with other people than on my own. So itâs not so much about me laughing but about the game being clever, in order to be funny.
At first I wanted to pick Jazzpunk, but I feel that choice would be a bit too obvious. So I chose another one (that you could get for free on steam) : Dr. Langeskov etc...
This game is seemingly inspired by the Stanley Parable...well, the prominent role of the narrator anyway. I donât think that it features lots of branching paths, but I could be wrong since I havenât got all the achievements.
The game is all about a game that is about to begin. But for some technical reason, it canât begin now. So the narrator will ask you to wait and donât do anything that could break the game. Of course thereâs a tiger involved so you should be very cautious...unless the tiger is sick or missing.
The game is all about the game that could be but isnât. Itâs all a meta-commentary about what we expect of games, and what games would be if, instead of being automatized by a computer, the games should be prepared each time for each individual player by real people working backstage. Almost more like a theater play than a video game.
You can of course experience it for yourself for free.
So many great games, so hard to choose only one. But, I like this game a bit more than the others and I played it a lot too.
So for day 6 of LoveIndies challenge 2020, my favourite indie game of the 2010âČs is Subnautica.
You are stranded on an alien planet. Water, water everywhere, in all directions. Youâll have to gather resources and bring them back to your base in order to craft better tools. Eventually youâll be able to craft a tool that lets you build structures, above or below water. Youâll also have to be careful not to die of thirst or hunger. Catching the small fishes can help you with that. Some bigger threats can also kill you quickly. Luckily, death is only a slap on the wrist since youâll respawn at your base.
This game cleverly manage to be a survival game with crafting in a science-fiction settings. Youâll spend most of the time underwater (hold your breath...or equip better oxygen tanks...). Everything is so pretty, the wildlife, the underwater landscape, even the rocks you collect. In order to progress, youâll have to scan many things. That will help you recover lost technologies to build better tools.
And thatâs where it goes above and beyond most surival games. Thereâs a mystery you have to solve. How did you get stranded on this planet ? What happened to rest of the crew ? What were your leaders trying to do ? Does sentient life exist in this planet ? How to escape ? Will someone come and rescue you ?
As your busy exploring to gather resources, youâll also find some derelicts of the other passengers. Youâll gather logs of the other survivors and of older expeditions. Youâll eventually piece out what happened before, and why this planet seems so desolate. I cannot think of another survival game that manage to also have a great underlying plot. And it was made by the same people that made Natural Selection, the FPS-RTS hybrid mod for half-life.
For all these reasons, Subnautica is my favourite indie games of the 2010...Jk itâs still Minecraft.
I had a hard time choosing this one. Most of the time, I was thinking about endings (thereâs lots of good ones). But the best ending is for another day (although I could have chosen two endings this way).
I finally settled for something happening in aquaria.
Getting out of the water for the first time.
Aquaria is a kind of metroidvania but instead of being a platformer youâre swimming underwater. Itâs also the game that really got me into playing indie games. Thereâs lot of exploration with lots of items to collect, including recipe (somehow you can cook underwater). In order to progress you must find the right upgrade, which you can then activate by singing. You sing holding the right mouse button and hovering over the symbols that appears in a circle around your character in the right order.
At some point, you will arrive in an area where you can leave the water. As you do, you will hear a line for the narrator (the character herself) and the game will slow down. It really feels like you found something special. Better than any collectable item, the beauty of the world itself is the best reward.
Afterwards there are some sections where you have to alternate being in and out of the water. You have almost no control of your movements outside. So you have to jump at the right angle and speed to get where you want to go. Those are the worst âjumpingâ puzzle of the game. Too bad...anyway, it still is the most memorable moment.
My favorite soundtrack comes from Risk of rain (the first one).
This game made me think about terraria but focusing only on combat. Although, it plays like a 2D platformer and has gorgeous (but very low fidelity) pixelart, itâs in fact a rogue-lite.
In every game, the difficulty increase gradually with the time you play. The goal of every section is to find the teleporter to the next section, activate it, and survive the incoming waves of enemy and the boss awakened by the activation.
Every section has two musical tracks. One before, and one after activating the teleporter. The Music can be very soothing in the first part, and then full of energy after the boss awaken. Thereâs also a gimmick in the naming of each track. All their names are somehow related to the weather/climate.

It seems you either have no memorable characters in a game or lots of them. I guess when you know how to write/draw vibrant characters you can do it with lots of them.
My pick for today is Dorothy from VA-11 HALL-A.
This game is all about character interactions in a Bar set in a Cyberpunk dystopia. Thereâs absolutely no fight involved, there is no dialogue options. Instead you get to chose which cocktail you give to your clients by clicking on the right ingredients in the good proportions. Thereâs also a management aspect since you have to earn enough money to pay the different bills each week. By choosing the right cocktails you can influence how the story goes, how your clients reacts.
Now, about Dorothy. Sheâs a robot, and a sex worker. She has a very young appearance but a very mature personality. Sheâs funny and seems full of energy. She even makes a reference to the Monty Python (by doing so she completely obliterated the competition for this reward).
Most of the time she comes to the bar and talks a lot with a lighthearted tone and always seems cheerful. But the interaction I remember the most is the one time when she comes and stay all quiet and looks kinda down. I donât think she even ask for a particular cocktail. But if you give her her favorite one, she will smile at you. This makes you really feel like you can cheer up someone else, thatâs the best feeling you can get (even if itâs just in a game).
Truth be told, I havenât play loads of new games from this year. I usually wait for big discounts and was busy anyway. But I heard of this game some days ago and itâs free (not free to play, flat out free) ! Well unless you want the art-book with the pancake recipe. That pretty much sets the tone for the game.
So I played it and wasnât disappointed. You play as a buff guy who just dreamt of lots of pretty girls in fancy suits in hell. So he knew he had to go to hell to make his harem of sharply dressed demon girls.
The game consist of puzzle (kinda like sokoban but not quite) where you have a limited number of steps to solve it...before being consumed by hell. Thereâs also a very limited dialogue system with which you interact with the girls. A wrong step, a wrong answer and you die (just try again afterward). It may be simple but itâs so funny. The music is pretty nice, and the artwork is...top notch !
The gaming library that includes all of your libraries
Or how to manage all your indie games if you want to review them ?
Itâs hard to be gaming on PC without having at least heard of steam. This library (does it even contain books ?) is the most widespread on PC. It gathers loads of games and discounts. There once was a time where does things didnât exist and every player had to manage him(her)self his(her) own games and CD boxes (yeah, Iâm old, I still remember that time). Nowadays itâs way more easy to get dematerialized games. However, different companies use different library and are in competition with each other. As a consequence, your games are spread on those various apps.
This is where GOG shines.
Firstly, GOG distribute digitally games DRM-free. Albeit, if you want you can use an app to download, launch and manage your games. This is all optional. A few months ago, it was updated to gather all your games even if they are separated on different platforms. Nevertheless, itâs still a hassle to launch a game that sit on another platform, since this other application has to be executed first before launching the game. However, thereâs nothing more satisfying than seeing all of the games you possess in a single place. Itâs even possible to add games when you only have an executable (like some freeware I used to talk about on this very blog).
In order to find easily your owned indie games, you just have to activate the filter Genre > Indie. And thatâs that, you only have to pick the games you want to review.
