The Fraser Legacy Challenge

Maddie always seems to be able to distract Nim from anything going on in her life. It is like Maddie is just a ray of sunshine. Nim tells Maddie about everything going on in her life, about Nadia and the number.

Nim had decided it had been long enough that she was cooped up inside her flat, stewing in her sorrow. Her sister was right across the hall. In the dead of night, Nim went to her door.

Nim: Maddie, I’m so sorry to bother y-.

Nim’s tears cannot be contained. She breaks down into her sister’s arms, Maddie seems positive.

Nim: Hello? O-oh...what? Wai-...mum, please, calm down. What’s up? -...no.

Nadia: You remember to call that number, alright, Nim?

Nim: I will, Nadia. Thank you so, so, so, so, so much. You honestly don’t know how much of a solid you are doing me. 

Nadia: Everyone in this city was once in the same situation you were in, just some forget it.

Nadia: Thank you for meeting me out here Nim.

Nim: It’s no problem, don’t worry. To be honest, I’m just glad I’m finally getting out of my flat - I feel like I’ve been cooped up there for ages now.

Small talk ensues as the two get to know one another - their roots, their childhood, interests, pastimes, hobbies, favourite songs.

Nadia: So you mean to tell me you’ve been here for three months now and not one person has haggled you for a job?

Nim: No, and to be honest I have no idea what I want to do...I just know I need to get off my mums’ funds and get on my feet...I know, it sounds pathe-.

Nadia: Nim, don’t be silly. It took me about a full year to get a full-time job in this city. Look, why don’t I give you my work number. I’m part of a big business in this city called “Titan Enterprise”, you give them a call and tell them Nadia asked you to call. You should come in one day - see what happens.

Nim: Nadia, are you sure? I don’t want to seem like a burden on you, or your company, or anything.

Nim: Hi, sorry...you don’t happen to know where the nearest newsagents is, do you? Sorry.

Nadia: Oh, no problem, honey. It’s just over there! Oh my! You’re pregnant! How far along are you?

Nim: Three months now...they’re getting big.

Nadia: You’re nervous, aren’t you?

Nim: How could you tell, is it that obvious?

Nadia: It’s a mother’s instinct. From one to another. Look...you’re new here aren’t you? I’ve lived here the past twenty years and not once have I seen you.

Nim: Yeah, I’ve just moved from Willow Creek.

Nadia: Why don’t you take my number, we should go for lunch sometime, I’m Nadia, by the way.

Nim: Oh. I’m Nim! And yeah, that would be great actually! Yeah! I’m free...pretty much any day.

Nadia: I’ll text you then, Nim.

Nim: It’s been a month now...I don’t know if I am settled yet. I know it’s a lot to expect for just moving in, but all of my job applications have been falling through and I haven’t exactly made any friends...I don’t know...I just feel...restless at night. I know it’s stupid, I’ve come here with all these big plans about making it big in the city and leaving my life behind but...I think I miss my life in Willow Creek. Everyone knew everyone there, and now...all I know here is Maddie. Of course, it’s great, we see each other almost every day and we go out for lunch, but she has her job and she has Robin, and it’s a busy schedule for her...I feel like a burden...
