you’re probably like psh what’s the big deal BUT THE COLLOQUIAL SERIES AND THE TEACH YOURSELF SERIES FOR HINDI, URDU, GUJARATI, PANJABI AND TAMIL ARE ALL ON HERE. DO YOU REALIZE HOW HARD IT IS TO FIND THE COLLOQUIAL SERIES SOMETIMES? ALSO SANSKRIT RESOURCES???

First of all, it’s only for the Asian languages of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Edit 3.17.18: Thank you @watercolourandwashitape for letting me know that the Chinese supported is Mandarin, Not Cantonese/Traditional. So keep that in mind, Chinese learners!

Normally I use Duolingo, but their support for Japanese is unsatisfactory at best. So I looked for a New app to learn Japanese, as I am self taught. I don’t remember how, but I stumbled upon LingoDeer. I am SO glad I did. No other app even comes close!

Just a note though, I have only learned Japanese from it and have not tried the other languages.

By far the best feature is that it includes a mini grammar lesson before each group of lessons! This was something Duolingo lacked immensely. There are also options to review words and grammar you already know. Without further ado, let’s get into how you play (because believe me, it feels more like playing a game then just learning)

First you pick you lesson category, the first of which is nationality

Once you click on it you’ll want to click on lesson tips, which helps with grammar and overall understanding

After reading the learning tips, you’re ready for the lessons. There are numerous question types to help you learn. They start with having you pick a Japanese picture that corresponds to the vocab, then you move to placing words in sentences before finally constructing sentences all by yourself!

When constructing sentences, you can either order the characters they give you or type them in yourself. After you finish you’ll be able to review the lesson via pop quiz or redo the lesson in challenge mode. At the end of each category there is a story. (Note: as of 3.3.18 it’s still in beta form). First you listen to and read the story, answering questions along the way. Then you can record yourself speaking the story and post it to the community where you can listen to others’ recordings as well.

Review mode to review all the words a/o grammar you’ve learned. Pro tip: you can specify which lessons you want to see words from

There’s only two things I can think of to improve the app

There’s no autosave. You MUST go down to the back up progress button. I didn’t realize this was necessary so when I rebooted my phone I lost my progress

No differentiation between polite and informal terms. So far they’ve only used the polite forms. Maybe they introduce it later, but I haven’t encountered it yet.

Edit 3.17.18: Another slight hindrance is the absence of verbs (with the exception of です) until a later unit, so if this is your only resource I recommend learning a good list of verbs online.

Overall this is an amazing app and I recommend it to everyone, even if you aren’t actively learning an Asian language!

I’ve been meaning to make this post for months, but here it is. When I started learning Russian four years ago there weren’t many apps out there, but now the app market is bigger and there are some great apps. Here is what I recommend and like.

Although there are only two prefixes in the third group, they are the most difficult ones. (And, unfortunately, frequently used.) The use of a prefix depends on the meaning. Here I`ll give the significations of each and examples, but keep in mind that in some words the reason for using the particular prefix is lost in time and hard to guess, so you`d just have to memorize these. But still, most words follow the main pattern, and in 80% of cases you can rely on it.

ПРИ- vs ПРЕ-

With nouns:

When stressed and added to the noun, makes a noun with a meaning “additional, sub”: при+свист (whistle) → при́свист (sibilation)

When added to the base of the noun, makes nouns and derivatives with a meaning “proximity, contiguity”: море (sea) → примóрский (adj) (seaside), дорога (road) → придорóжный (adj) (roadside)

When not stressed and added to a noun, might form a reflexive verb with a meaning of obtaining something (including features): цель (aim, target) → прице́литься (to take aim)

When added to the verb and not stressed (always in this case), makes a verb with a meaning:

“to add”, “to attach”: присоедини́ться (to join) 

“sub, minor“: приукра́шивать (to embellish)

“a little, slightly“, “not entirely“, “low-key”: приоткры́ть (to open slightly), призадýматься (to sink into a reverie)

“complete“, “to finish“: приже́чь (cauterize)

“sub, side, along“: припева́ть (sing along /while doing sth/)

“to get used to“: приспосóбиться (to adapt)

“to press down“: пригла́живать (to smoothen)

How to use:

When added to the verb (always not stressed), makes a verb with a meaning:

“over“, “too much“ (in this case it`s a shorten form of prefix “пере-”): пресы́титься (to satiate oneself), пресе́чь (to cross, to set a limit), пререка́ться (to bicker)

change of condition: претвори́ть /в жизнь/ (to implement), прекрати́ть (to cease)

When added to a qualitative adjective or an adverb, makes a higher degree of quality (sometimes even a superlative):

превосхо́дно (excellently), преми́лый (very cute)

/note that adjectives and adverbs with this prefix are sometimes (quite rarely, actually) used in pair with the ones without a prefix, to strengthen a highness of quality degree: зло́й-презло́й, бо́льно-пребо́льно)/

Might be added to any part of speech to make a word with the meaning “before sth” (but that is another prefix, which came from Latin “prae-”/”prai-”), so it`s the same as the prefixes “перед-” or even “пра-”:

прелю́дия (n) (prelude), прерафаэли́тский (adj) (pre-raphaelite)

Some words in which ПРЕ- and ПРИ- are interchangeable:

Преступи́ть закон (to break a law) ↔ приступи́ть к работе (to start working)

Prefixes of the second type have simple rules of spelling. Each of them ends with letters -з/-зо/-с. (Note that the prefix c-/co- doesn`t belong to this category and doesn`t change) Choice of the letter depends on which letter goes next.

If the next letter is:

a) a vowel or a voiced consonant, you write a prefix with -З

Vowels are: А, О, И, У, Ы, Э, Е, Ё, Ю, Я. 

Voiced consonants are: Б, В, Г, Д, Ж, З, Л, М, Н, Р, Й.

b) an unvoiced consonant, you write a prefix with -C

Unvoiced consonants are: К, П, С, Т,Ф, Х, Ц, Ч, Ш, Щ.

Hey, I decided to make posts about all these prefixes (btw, there`re 70 in total), with examples and significations, to help you understand how meaning of the word changes with its parts (or to confuse you even more). Word formation is what truly makes language learning so much easier and more exciting, isn`t it?

As they teach it in schools, there`re three types of prefixes in Russian language (classified by spelling). Therefore, I`ll make three posts about each type. If you believe that I missed something or if you have any doubt or question, feel free to say it.

We have two verbs to say knowing, and they’re both extremely used but for two different situations.

SAVOIR = Knowing how to do something, or being aware of something

Je sais lire = I know how to read

Mais je sais = But I know

CONNAÎTRE = Knowing when you’re familiar to something. You should be able to substitute “connaître” with “i’m familiar with”

Je connais ce film = I know (I’m familiar) with this movie
