In a previous post I answered a question about word order and I talked a little bit about adjective placement with word order and I figured Iâd go more in depth about it so here we go yâall.
90% of the time adjectives will go after a noun
The other 10% are adjective having to do with age, âgoodnessâ (bon/mal), size, and beauty. There are some cases where an adjective is placed before the noun and it completely changes the meaning:
(yes the nouns are super random)
1. Ancien(ne)
Lâancien chĂąteau âĄïž the former castle
Le chĂąteau ancien âĄïž the old castle
2. Cher/chĂšre
Cher ami âĄïž dear friend
Une voiture chĂšre âĄïž an expensive car
3. Dernier/derniĂšre
La derniĂšre semaine âĄïž the final week
La semaine derniĂšre âĄïž last week
4. Grand(e)
Un grand chien âĄïž a big dog
Une femme grandeâĄïž a tall woman
5. MĂȘme
Le mĂȘme musĂ©e âĄïž the same museum
Le musĂ©e mĂȘme âĄïž this very museum
6. Pauvre
Ces pauvres enfants âĄïž these poor kids (unfortunate)
Ces enfants pauvres âĄïž these poor kids (poverty)
7. Prochain(e)
Le prochain cours âĄïž the following class
Mercredi prochain âĄïž next wednesday
8. Propre
Ma propre chambre âĄïž my own bedroom
Une chambre propre âĄïž a clean bedroom
9. Seul(e)
La seule personne âĄïž the only person
La personne seule âĄïž the person whoâs alone
