My friend made a super cool language guessing game that is now fully functional!
https://langle.uk/
The database has a lot of minority languages (especially in level 3) and if you don’t guess correctly, you get a hint based on linguistic relatedness.
So far the hint/percentage is just geographical distance, but working on using linguistic relatedness!
Expect a Langle update very, very soon!
good to know im not alone in guessing the complete wrong side of the world on this one!
That's one hell of a confident turnaround though, from 2 to 98 percent 👏

😭 Heartbreaking
Langle on University Challenge? :O
There were a few Langle questions on University Challenge this Monday (Birkbeck vs York)!
Just like in the Langle game, the contestants were asked to identify a language from Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. :D
Unlike on Langle.uk, the contestants didn't have a helpful dropdown menu of languages to choose from.
Great knowledge from the York team

Yoooooo????
English not having words for carbon or hydrogen aside from the scientific word is so weird to me.
I need you to understand that in Germany, we usually have a scientific word and a "normal" word for each scientific thing.
So yeah, we have "Hydrogen" and "Carbon", but in every day conversation you can't call it that or people will think you're a twat. You call it "Fabric of water" and "Fabric of coal".
Same in Dutch.
It all comes down to English being three languages stacked in a trench coat. It's a Germanic language yet so much of its vocab comes from French or Latin. In a language of loan words, what one more scientific loan?
I guess all languages descend from Chinese now

A group of my friends are playing Langle daily in our DND discord, I hope you know the joy it brings us as a group of differing kinds of nerds!
That's so cool!! Thanks for sharing that! 😃
Knowing that Langle brings joy to you and your friends and other nerdy friend groups makes it all so worth it ❤️
you are an absolute delight, and have made me and several of my friends scream in fury, and also go learn about languages we didn't know existed. 10/10. I'd say no notes, but.... could there be a translation of the text after you win/lose?
Aw, thank you for your kind words! 🤗
That's a great idea to put the translation in the solution screen! I'll get on that! 😀 (Right now it's stashed away in the FAQ - under the ? in the topleft corner.)
The text is always Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which is one of the most translated documents in the world thanks to the UDHR Translation Project. It's an incredible project that set out to translate the UDHR into every language in the world! After all, human rights are the most fundamental rights a person has, and language should not be a barrier to that 👐🤗
This is Article 1 / the Langle text in English:
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
There were 555 different UDHR translations last time I checked, of which 322 have made it into Langle so far.
And the UDHR project is ongoing - so if you or someone you know speaks an obscure language that's not been translated (or read aloud) yet, please consider contributing ☺️

This is very fun, but my level one was Hungarian (my mother tongue) and I got very confused and I didn’t understand how that was an option to be guessed, because I forgot that most people actually do not speak Hungarian :D
Oh Lord, my dad had the same issue when I first showed it to him: "What am I supposed to do??"
The language was Dutch. His native language is Dutch xD
I'm currently working on a little how-to-play demo for the upcoming home screen (sneak peek below)!

Assuming you have 1 native language, there is either a ~2.5% or a ~0.4% chance of it being the day's Langle answer depending on whether the language is classified as level 1/2 or level 3 :D
(Based on the current numbers of 34 languages to choose from in level 1, 79 in level 2, and 322 in level 3)

Yeah, the percentages are geographical distance for now!
Those ponderings are exactly the issues I'm dealing with wrt using relatedness of languages as a measure of correctness instead of geography. 😅
I have permission to use the data from http://elinguistics.net/, a project with the aim to quantify linguistic relatedness. Check them out, because they are doing great stuff and their models are getting more and more accurate!
But yeah, I suspect I'll end up adding linguistic relatedness rather than replacing geography as a measure entirely. (Maybe as a lil/big flame 🔥 tagged on to a guess that's related with more or less certainty and/or distance)
