28' sheaf. Getting better.
Sacramento Valley Game AKA Woodland
A little late writing this up, but I came in 2nd at Woodland. Not my best day on the field, but with Dave Brown coming out of retirement the result was a foregone conclusion no matter how I performed. Watch “Battle of the Celtic Giants” sometime to get a feel for the ridiculousness that is Dave Brown. Nicest guy in the world, no ego, but he possesses crazy strength and athleticism.
Braemar - 30′8″ 2nd. Stones just weren’t on at all.
Open Stone - 34′11″ 3rd. I was disgusted with these. I could not keep myself together on the spin. It was so bad that it inspired me to give gliding a go for a while.
HWFD - 40′3.5″ 2nd. Kept finishing closed off, likely because I was rushing my throws.
LWFD - 58′5.5″ 2nd. Again couldn’t finish properly to save my life.
Heavy Hammer - 75′ 2nd. Really happy with what happened on HH. I had a nice series.
Light Hammer - 88′2.5″ 2nd. Not so happy here.
WOB - 15′ 3rd. Hit th ebar twice at 16′ and came in 3rd because I knocked off one attempt at 15′.
Sheaf - 26′ 2nd and a PR. I came in at 20′ and cleared everything easily until 28′. The only problem is tht we were only going up by 2 foot intervals. Next time out I am going to save myself for a higher opening height.
Caber - 45 degrees 3rd. Caber was 18′6″ and 100lbs, but had a really nasty crack in it with some bolts holding it together and originally the AD warned us not to use this one because it was a dead stick. Nobody turned it, so I guess the AD was right.
Kind of a headscrather performance wise, but I think 2 comps in a row, several birthday celebrations, and a heavy squat/bench session in between games fried me. I just never had any pop.
Dave is a hell of a guy, just wish he wouldn’t throw a 72′ foot light weight, chuckle and let me know that he hasn’t touched one in 18 months next time.
Next is the WOB and Sheaf Championships of the Universe on May 16th, which is a charity event held by a friend. Last year I got a little drunk and didn’t do so good, but I swear this time I am not messing around. Last year we raised $600+ for an orphanage in Mexico though, so it is all good. After that I am competing in Costa Mesa Memorial Day weekend. Ought to be a good one as Brian “Buck” Austin is making a comeback after some time off. He is another good guy and a hell of a thrower. I’m just hoping to hold on to 2nd at this one.
Light Hammer went well too. Went over 96 feet 2/3. #didnthavetousemyak #todaywasagoodday
Glide open stone out to 39. All 3 were 38+. Still working on this one.
Standing open stone out past 38 feet on 2/3. #badangle #dayumimfat

Went 61+ on my 3rd light weight throw.
Good session today, did warmups then 3 competition throws. Finished with a 44+ hwfd. @buck.austin inspired me to get some video for once. #lastthrowbesthrow
Weights 10.7.13 and Throwing 10.8.13
Bench session Monday. This "10s wave" sucks.
Bench - worked up to 3x10x205
Slingshot - 3x4x275
BB Rows - 3x10x225
Crunches 3x50
Still hate high reps.
Throwing on Tuesday, it is my first time since the back started feeling better. Pretty happy with the results.
Standing OStone - 10ish throws
LWFD - 10ish throws
Sheaf 5ish
1 WOB Throw
Ostone felt ok, didn't feel good timing-wise but the distances weren't bad. Adjusted my starting position back to more of a rotational stance with my feet more staggered than inline. Didn't feel much pop but had a few decent standing throws. Really need to focus on this in the off season.
LWFD went really well. Had a few where my timing was terrible, but after maybe 2 or 3 throws things began clicking and I was laying everything out over 55 ft after that. I had a few in the 57 range, which isn't bad.
Took a couple of sheaf throws, but nothing to write home about.
Throwing 5.5.13
Some Sunday throwing with a Cinco de Mayo feast afterwards.
Throws:
Braemar - toeboards, throws x 10 (best 30+)
Light Hammer - 1 winds x 3, 3 winds x 15ish (best 94+)
WOB - 5/5 at 12'
Caber - x 5 flips with our new C class caber
Really wasn't feeling it, but the throws were ok. I'm doing something funky on my standing stone throws whereby I pull the throw across my body and out to my left on the field. The few where I went straight down the field were my best throws in months. Not sure what is causing that. Also pushing too far forward and not blocking enough.
Hammer just never got going, however, all my throws were 90+. Just wanted to go 5/5 with as little effort as possible on WOB and did so easily. Need to reinforce being patient as the weight drops then pulling.
Took 5 tosses with the new caber. It is waaaay too small to be of much use to me, but it is good to get reps in even if they aren't terribly difficult.
Throwing 2.19.13
OStone and Hammers tonight. Great night with OStone and I hope I can reproduce the results.
Throws:
OStone - toeboards, standing x 5, MSA x 8
Heavy Hammer - 1 winds, 2 winds, 3 winds x 8
Light Hammer - 3 winds x 5
Banner OStone night. First throw was 39+ and it just got better from there. Tried to smooth out the hitch I have had in the middle of my spin and it seemed to help out quite a bit. Not sure what else I was doing better, but the stone was flying out so much faster tonight. Must have been the Oldfeld and Hoffa shot put videos I watched today on youtube...
Decided to throw heavy hammer tonight for a change of pace and averaged around 69' with 2 at 72+. My pr is in the 72 range and my best tonight was 72'8" so I can't be far off. Really happy with my throws. Light hammer was a mess for whatever reason, couldn't keep it to my right and my throws were terrible. Still going to work on that, but I felt good with the heavy and on film it looks like my hips were more involved and I just need to get a little longer.

Throwing 10.20.12
Big morning practice with Jose, Molly, and Tom from Phoenix. Legs are still killing me, not sure why I cannot seem to recover from what was a rather low effort squat workout.
Throws:
Braemar - warmups, full throws x ~5 (best 29+)
Open Stone - MSA x ~8 (best 39+)
Light Weight - full throws x ~15 (best 55+)
Heavy Hammer - 1 winds, 2 winds, fulls x ~5 (best 70+)
Light Hammer - fulls x ~10 (best 91+)
Felt as though I had some energy this morning for the first time in a while, so that was really good. Braemar felt really off, will throw again before Tucson games to get my tech better and hopefully a little more explosive. I think I am not getting my hips open while holding my upper back as well as I once was on stones. Open was feeling really good with the majority of my throws right around 39 feet or higher.
Light weight started off feeling like a continuation from Ventura - slow with no pop. I decided to work on driving a little more linear and pulling a little harder after the initial cast and it seemed to work. My final 5 or so throws were my best by far.
Hammers were ok, the sore groin muscles really made driving side to side uncomfortable. Nevertheless, I will take those numbers today after my 64/84 showing in Ventura.
Going to get after Caber, WOB, and Sheaf tomorrow am with the Hammerheads crew. Gained a bit of knowledge about sheaf from a competitor after Ventura and I really want to try it out.
Next week will be a typical week, lifting and throwing wise. Thinking I will try to get my lifting in early in the week so that I do not have a soreness issue to deal with into next week. Also going to try ice baths to see if they help me with recovery. If it works I will make it a staple.
Weights 6.2.12
Hit the gym and am very happy with the back situation. Shoulder is still improving.
Weights:
Jobes
Hip/low back stretches (4s, pigeon pose, cow pose)
Deads 135x8, 225x5, 255x3, 275x5, 315x5, 355x10
Push Press 2x5x95, 3x115, 5x135, 5x155, 7x165
Pull Ups 3x10 assisted
Hammer Curls/Overhead DB Triceps 3x10 superset (55lbs db and 100lb)
Feeling much better, have to get my strength up again. Should get back to tracking calories, fell out of the habit...
