Virginia
I thought maybe you could hang up your costume and embrace leadership from within the people.
But you nurtured the black snake more than the Black community.
I thought maybe you could say that you had learned, that we need to teach consent, that you are an example of the effects of a toxic culture.
But you said fuck that bitch and denied her distress.
I thought maybe our champions had finally found their voice and remembered who they are as they called for resignation and denounced racism.
They were silenced by the discovery that this IS who they are and who they’ve always been.
I thought maybe the courage and bravery behind the statement “we have met with the Governor… and renew our calls for him to resign” would be carried through in the spirit of the civil rights movement that tossed out Jim Crow.
But they only read Martin’s Letters and forgot about his life.
