Jim Holloway had a lot of fun with this month's cover, which he has named "Butch and Sundance: The Early, Early, Early, Early, Early, Early Years." The elf and halfling have discovered that their DM decided the campaign should be more exciting -- from the DM's point of view, of course.
(Dragon 161, September 1990) The pair jumping together might be a nod to Butch and Sundance, but the composition from this point of view probably owes something to Die Hard and the iconic leap away from the explosion on the roof. The editor's last comment refers to this issue's special feature, "Why is the DM Smiling? Four ways to enliven your fantasy-game campaigns."

DM tip: Â If your world includes flying ships, magic carpets, flying brooms, rings of flying, levitation potions, and NPCs mounted on pegasi, griffons, and dragons, then the PCsâ first impression of a big city will be focused on all the activity in the air above. Â The most important government, business, religious, and magical locales may be hubs for this traffic. Â Also take a tip from Terry Pratchett â unless the magic college is completely invisible, it may be the most noticeable building as flames occasionally belch out of the windows and lightning arcs from the rooftops, and if you watch long enough the tallest tower randomly vanishes and reappears.
âWhen the Invoked Devastation came upon the Baklunish, their own magi brought down the Rain of Colorless Fire in a last terrible curse, and this so affected the Suloise Empire as to cause it to become the Sea of Dust.â The Twin Cataclysms ended the long Baklunish-Suloise Wars in mere moments, scattered the survivors of both empires, and reshaped the map of the Flanaess. The exact nature of these magics have been debated for a thousand years. (Erol Otus illus and quote from The World of Greyhawk by Gary Gygax, TSR, original folio version 1980) Previously
Player tip: If you enter a new location and the DM mentions a well, always â always â look down the well first (looks like Kevin Siembieda, from âThe Well-Wasters & Water Whips,â Judges Guild Journal 21, June-July 1980)
