Flower Boy 🌹🥀 (young!Creelby)
summary: modern flower au, where Patty Newby is a model and Henry is a flower boy taken for one of her photoshoots
cw: hurt-comfort, death
Patty first saw Henry when she needed flowers for a photo shoot. Among all the vibrant flower boys and girls in the shop, the stylists had inexplicably chosen him—a fair-haired, pale boy with delicate burgundy flowers woven into his hair, growing along his jawline and near his large blue eyes. He looked so fragile and small that Patty initially felt a twinge of unease. When she asked, "Why him?" the stylists explained that her image would appear more striking, more contrasting against the backdrop of this little flower boy.
Receiving an approving nod from the clients, the florist opened the transparent door of the display case, its interior misted with humidity. She removed the mask of the life-support apparatus — which all the flower boys and girls in the shop were attached to — from the boy's face. Then, to Patty, rather roughly, she tugged the boy's arm, pulling him out into the main area.
"Here you are. That'll be…"
Patty tilted her head, studying the flower boy with interest. He stared at the floor, motionless, not even lifting his head when Patty stepped right up to him.
"Hi," she greeted him warmly.
The flower boy timidly raised his gaze to her, his pale blue eyes full of distrust. He didn't answer. But Patty wasn't fazed in the slightest.
"I'm Patty. Patty Newby," she introduced herself, extending a hand towards the flower boy.
Again, there was no response, but his look shifted from distrustful to puzzled. The handshake, to Patty's regret, also went ignored.
"Miss Newby, we're going to be late for the hairdresser!" one of the stylists called out.
"Coming!" she replied. "Let's go," she nodded conspiratorially to the flower boy, and he obediently followed her.
It was cold outside—despite early March, the snow showed no signs of melting, and the thermometer was stubbornly creeping downwards. Patty, accompanied by the stylists, got out of the car and noticed the flower boy remained inside. He was staring ahead, eyes half-lidded, occasionally exhaling faint little clouds of barely warm breath.
"Are you sure it's a good idea to leave him in the car?" Patty asked, gesturing towards the flower boy.
"Hmm, better to bring him inside, I suppose, otherwise he'll get cold. Miss Newby, could you get him, please?"
Patty opened the car door and once again reached out her hand to the flower boy.
"Come on. You'll freeze if you stay here."
He looked at her, then took her warm hand and stepped out, shivering from the cold and wrinkling his pale little nose, smudged with pollen.
"Are you cold?" Patty asked softly, even though the question was somewhat redundant.
The boy gave her a barely perceptible nod. Patty unwound the long, soft scarf from her neck and wrapped it around the flower boy.
"That should be better now. Do you have a name?"
"Henry," the boy whispered.
"Oh, so you can talk after all?"
"Flowers only talk to those who treat them well. You are good, Patty Newby." ***
"Please, have a seat," said the hairdresser. "We need to touch up your hairstyle before the shoot. You can put the flower on the windowsill."
"The window's open there," Patty noted, stopping Henry with a gentle gesture. "He'll get cold. Better give him some water."
"Nothing will happen to him. He's just a flower."
Just a flower... ***
Henry and Patty complemented each other perfectly in the frame. They leaned closer and closer to one another, and Patty could sense the sweet scent of the flower boy's hair.
"Messy," the photographer frowned, lowering his camera.
He walked over to the flower boy and began unceremoniously plucking green petals from his hair. Henry winced, clenching his teeth, but remained silent.
"What are you doing?!" Patty intervened, pulling the flower away from the photographer's hands. "You're hurting him!"
"Hurting who? The flower? Flowers don't feel anything."
"Well, he does feel it!" Patty pulled Henry close, shielding his head with her hand. "I'm sorry," she whispered to the him during the shoot. "They're all just ignorant. I won't let them hurt you again."
"Thank you…" the flower boy rustled faintly, tears in his voice.
*** "What will happen to me now?" Henry asked sadly, sitting on the table and watching Patty, now changed into her everyday clothes, pack her dress back into its garment bag.
"What do you mean?" Patty paused, looking at the flower boy in confusion.
"Well… You'll… throw me away later too, won't you?"
"What are you talking about?" she frowned, approaching the flower. Henry flinched back, startled. Patty helped him slide down from the table onto the floor and hugged him.
"I'm never ever letting you go," she whispered, promising.
"Really?…"
"For sure, Henry." ***
"Patty…" Henry whispered weakly. He was deathly pale now, barely able to stand, and his little flowers looked wilted.
"What's wrong with you?" Patty examined the flower anxiously. "Are you unwell? Are you sick?"
"I don't know… I have no strength left at all…"
Patty carefully helped the weakened flower lie down on the windowsill and gave him some water. "Drink this, it should help you feel better."
Henry drank reluctantly, but only a tiny bit. "No, it's not helping…" he shook his head, pushing the bottle away. With this movement the petals from his head began to fall.
"How can I help you? Tell me!" Patty squeezed the flower boy's hand.
"There's no way now, Patty… I'm dying…"
"What?! No, no, please, no! Don't you dare die!.."
"Flowers cut off from the life-support machine… they don't live long… Only a few days…" Henry closed his eyes.
"Henry… My sweet little flower… Please, don't leave me… I love you…"
With tears in her eyes Patty gently traced her fingertips along the flower's pale cheek. He smiled faintly, barely touching her hand.
"Thank you, Patty Newby…" Henry whispered through his tears. "Meeting you made me the happiest flower in the world… Please, keep a few of my petals…"
And he fell silent, his head drooping lifelessly.
