no idea what just happened in the supernatural fandom but i just saw like six ominous posts in a row on my dash so my condolences and i hope i never find out what caused it
cancel culture is performative activism in and of itself.
putting this under a readmore w/ general tw: discourse, negativity, transphobia/racism/antisemitism mentions
what good does calling out your favorite streamer for insensitive older tweets do? it makes you feel better about "solving the problem" without actually addressing the root cause of systemic oppression. your streamer apologizes, you pat yourself on the back, and no one trends the actual issues.
we have lots of evidence that sbi (and many other mcyts) are in fact very accepting, both in the general attitude and the more specific "can you say ___ rights/black lives matter", etc. (although that is basically asking them to perform activism -- being paid to say so-and-so deserves rights doesn't necessarily reflect their actual beliefs, and several mcyts -- wilbur and quackity come to mind -- have addressed that.) the fact that these content creators are not as outwardly liberal as you might be does not mean they don't believe or contribute to these causes privately.
in this case i think techno might've just been a little tone deaf. while "don't murder people" feels like it's making light of the situation, he still linked a petition and gave it exposure. and digging up tweets from years ago to prove your streamer is racist is silly, both because everyone is stupid at 17 and because they've clearly changed since then. a lot of his older tweets 1) probably made more sense in context 2) are obviously sarcastic. like "when i grow up i want to be racist". that's satire.
phil regularly blocks people that break his boundaries without blocking all the sbi critical fans. he's not mass-blocking criticism, he blocked a couple, and twitter's blowing it out of proportion.
with tommy... that entire ksi situation was terrible for reasons a lot of other people have said better than me, so i'll link their posts here: 1 2 3 (there's obviously more but these cover it pretty well)
the general trend of calling out content creators that have ever had contact with genuinely problematic cc's is unhelpful. most of those cc's would rather stick around and help educate their friends, and it's likely that they do that behind the scenes. we are not privy to that knowledge.
even if you do end up "educating" your streamer in between the floods of hate and incoherent yelling, you've not addressed the root issue. it's treating the symptoms of societal prejudice, not the root causes. sure, it's easier to attack your streamer: they're far more likely to agree with you and apologize than a right-wing conservative who's trying to bar trans rights, but it's totally ineffective for actually changing the way the system's run. when you get your streamer to publicly apologize for a perceived slight, what you've done is
stressed them out to no end for several days
accomplished something that lets you pat yourself on the back, and
nothing for legitimate reform.
your streamer has influence over people that think similarly to you. chances are the majority of their audience already believes in queer rights and black lives matter! twitter's an echo chamber of liberals agreeing with each other and conservatives agreeing with each other and the two sides refusing to compromise. if you're on the side of twitter that tries to cancel streamers for outdated tweets and dug-up evidence, everyone that's gonna cancel with you already agrees with you -- if anything, your behavior will drive your streamer further from your perspective, because people don't learn from mobbing and screaming.
additionally: step back and check whether you're speaking over minorities. for example: i'm chinese! i'd rather you didn't weaponize asian minorities (or minorities in general) when claiming techno's racist against asians because of a couple jokes in poor taste. the majority of people that are cancelling are inflating an issue that really doesn't need it. please save your energy for trending trans rights bills and immigration laws, for example. or even legitimate blackface and h*tler jokes from today, not five years ago.
i know it's exhausting to fight against the legitimate sources of discrimination in society. but attacking content creators is not the way to fix that.
(note: i'm specifically talking about the trend i've seen of digging up old stuff that you think a streamer should apologize for today. i'm not talking about things like schlatt's recent blackface or ksi's transphobia. please keep that in mind if you wanna add on to this.)

Alexa, how do I make other people on social media understand that just because I complain about a character's shitty behavior it doesn't mean I automatically hate them?
Alexa, how do I convince people online that protagonists need to have flaws and selfish motivations to change for the better through the progression of a story?
Alexa, how do I explain that losing a flawed parent who had unresolved business left in this world is so much more traumatic than they think, and I know I'm right because I've experienced it?
All of c!Philzaâs bad character traits can be summed up to Phil, the streamer, just not taking this seriously
Wilbur and Tommy are his sons? Lol sure, whatever you say, anyway heâll be helping Techno because he enjoys screwing around with his friend
Friend is in his house? Eh, theyâre already here with the tnt, itâs got infinite canon lives, itâll be fine
Ranboo commits crimes and then forgets them? Lmao they could totally use that to their advantage to fuck with people and screw around without getting in trouble
Philza isnât taking this seriously and neither should you, remember that itâs just roleplay
techno is my favourite character, but that does not mean I am blind to his characters faults or hypocritical behaviour. I get it, c!techno isn't the best person, same with c!phil.
but I am begging some of y'all to chill.
c!techno did nothing to c!ranboo, and at most what c!phil suggested was that his memory problems might come in handy because he won't remember the syndicate and therefore can't accidentally or intentionally divulge information about it, and it was definitely an offhanded suggestion to try and convince techno go recruit him.
that's it, guys. they made some comments about distrusting him (which makes sense in the lore? because they barely know him) partly because he reminds techno of himself (which is objectively hilarious and surprisingly self aware).
and for the record? no one is forcing ranboo to stay. I saw some people going after c! techno and c!phil for deceiving ranboo? or something? like yes, he doesn't know about this secret organization they just founded, but a) they don't owe him anything and b) they literally said he's one of the potential recruits, they just want to get other members involved first because they distrust him.
also, I'd like to bring your attention to one of the passages in the manifesto that says members will not be forced to fight if they opt out. so if ranboo joins, he isn't going to have to fight.
so can someone explain to me what exactly they did that was so bad? they weren't even mean to ranboo? it makes sense with their characters to distrust him (especially with mr. trust issues blade)?
when characters do something worth criticizing, criticize them. it's really interesting to look into motives and all. but it's way too soon to be going after c!techno and c!phil, and kind of unfair too. just chill out, watch the stream, and see where this goes. that's what I'll be doing at least.

watching the turtle stream and thinking about how, the other day, Techno came across a random Iron Golem in his stream and went so far out of his way to heal it, taking out his ender chest and cutting down a tree for a 45th crafting table just to feed it some iron bars and get it to full health
vs Phil coming across a random Iron Golem while turtle hunting today and not only mercilessly beating it to death while Techno watched on in horror, but doing so after ransacking itâs village and needlessly slaughtering the very villagers it was supposed to protect right in front of it
my dude did specifically say in SMP Earth that Techno makes him âsmell blood in the waterâ. and think about their MCM together; Phil wasnât even a top 10 player until he teamed with Techno, at which point he went Full Offensive Mode and got those kill points
my theory is that Phil is always chaotic af, but being around Techno makes him feel secure enough in their combined power that he really lets that instinct run wild
anyway i feel like itâs important to remember, with all the different takes coming out rn (particularly about c!philza, c!tommy, and c!technoblade) that the format Dream SMP is in has multiple perspectives. your choice in the streamer you watch is ultimately going to impact your opinion of other characters and their actions.Â
so donât get too worked up about it or upset if someone expresses support for a character you donât agree with. chances are theyâve been viewing the narrative through a different lens than you

Hey yeah, fun question for all of you hating on Phil for doing business with Dream. So when was it ever completely said with certainty, not as a little quip or joke, that Tommy was Phil's son? Or, actually, another fun little question, when did Tommy ever tell Phil about all the shit Dream did to Tommy? Hm? I'm just so curious you know, seeing as Phil is such a bad "dad" that used Dream as a resource for his own motives, when he didn't even know Tommy had past problems with Dream
A few people replied that Phil did in fact know everything that happened to Tommy, but I took a look and not quite. Phil knows Dream did ONE thing and that was not sending out the invites for Tommy's beach party. He knows that, but not everything Tommy went through; still good info to know!
Iâm relistening to the scene of Ghostbur talking to Phil from the destruction of New Lâmanburg and it is just so fantasticÂ
(Philza on Twitch Jan 6th 2021 âChaos is a constant.â 1:24:20)
Lots of rambling and stuff below about the scene, sorry in advance but I have alotta thoughts
One thing that stands out to me particularly in this scene is how Ghostbur tells Phil that he âSlayed the dragon, slayed Aliveburâ saying that everyone recognizes Phil as âThe Saint George of the Dream SMPâ and then asks how Phil could POSSIBLY see himself as a hero after helping in the destruction of New Lâmanburg
But the thing about that is Phil DOESNâT see himself as a hero for what he did to Wilbur, and itâs something Ghostbur I think at this point in time would never be able to understand. Ghostbur HATES Alivebur and sees him as a monster so of course when Phil killed him that makes him a hero! But to Phil? Phil didnât kill a monster, he killed a broken empty version of his son who was begging for an end.
And thatâs the thing about Ghostbur, he CANâT understand what is happening because he doesnât know what Alivebur has done or comprehend the message of Techno and Philâs attack even though Phil tryâs to explain it to him. And because he canât remember what happened in the past Ghostbur can only see Philâs actions against Lâmanburg as another person trying to make him suffer, as opposed to Phil trying to end the suffering that had already been happening due to Lâmanburgâs existence.
So when Ghostbur gets emotional at the end of their conversation and Philâs response is âMaybe one day youâll understandâ I donât believe heâs saying that to be an asshole or to brush Ghostburâs emotions off, I think heâs just saying that thereâs literally no way for Ghostbur to understand Philâs motives or the current situation at this time yâknow?
