Uraume headcanon dump!! Because one single person asked for it and that is all the encouragement my autistic ass needs lmfao. @maclalowtier
Mentioned in one of my previous posts about them, I love the idea of them having been a farmer in the heian era.
We know they lived in a small, seemingly very rural village before sukuna came along. We know they were near Arashiyama forest, too, since they walk there in seemingly the span of a day, which also means they were placed around where kyoto is now. Anyways, point is, they were out in the fields.
This specific headcanon lead me down a very, very long rabbit hole one time, and so the most likely animals for them to have owned were cows and maybe chickens. Pigs, sheep and other forms of livestock simply didnât exist in Japan yet, for religious dietary reasons or for the simple fact that they werenât native to Japan (I mean, there were wild boars, but that is very different from a regular pig). Though, there were a small group of sheep kept in Kyoto palace during the heian era, so itâs possible sukuna ended up with some of those as a gift at some point, and Uraume tended for them, but thatâs later down the line.
Initially, they would have lived on a cattle farm. They probably grew crops as well, but cattle were big and expensive, and most crops grown would probably go to the village and the animals, so cows and cow meat would likely be the villageâs main export, especially with living so close to Kyoto palace, somewhere that could afford to buy those big, expensive animals and the meat they produced. (Iâm writing all of this with my beloved cow doll sat besides me, Umami Iâm sorryyyyy-)
But, this means the village was by no means struggling, Uraume was likely pretty well off as a kid, which makes sense. They speak very formally and polite, right from the get-go when meeting sukuna.
I think, on top of everything prior, Uraume having been a farmer makes a lot of sense. Theyâre clearly relatively young when sukuna finds them, Iâd put them at around 15, yet they already have a great knowledge of how to butcher and cook flesh. Where best to learn that, than on a farm that does that for a living? And of course, once their technique manifested, and they were left alone, they could easily transfer that knowledge of butchering cows to butchering humans. (This is where I have to be really careful to not devolve into a cannibalism rant)
I donât think all, if any, of Uraumeâs cows died in the incident that killed their village, nor do I think they did after. It stands to reason that the cow pastures were far enough away from Uraumeâs house for them to avoid the ice. I think the reason Uraume turned to cannibalism, over eating the cows, was for the sole reasons of:
The humans were already dead. Slaughtering a cow is not easy. Theyâre huge, they have horns, they can kick, headbutt and bite. They could trample you to death if they pushed you over. Uraume isnât gonna want to fuck with that. So itâs much easier to just take the dead bodies around them, and use what they have, before risking their own life trying to take out a cow, even if just one would have easily fed them for over a year.
And, they liked the cows. Uraume definitely strikes me as the kind of person to like animals more than humans. Animals are predictable, they simply exist alongside you, and they donât try to annoy you. Even if they do get on your nerves, theyâre more than cute enough to get away with it. Humans on the other hand, are ugly and seem to enjoy making your life harder.
I think after sukuna found them, after he decided they were to accompany him, they returned to the village, where Uraume collected the cows that they had, and took them back to sukunaâs palace. No doubt he had the land to keep a small herd, and if he didnât, he could just take some.
I think their little farm would have grown from there. They would eventually get gifted some sheep, which would immediately become Uraumeâs favourite. Theyâre just smaller, fluffy, cows, that make the most adorable noises, that are even more useful due to their wool, and have even cuter babies. Theyâd also come into possession of horses a few times, and theyâd hate every second of raising them. There wouldnât be a day go by, where sukuna didnât sit, vaguely irritated, as they ranted about the new dumb shit the animals had done to break a fence or hop a wall, leading to the sheep following suit and then they had to go to the village to collect them, and this is the third time this month, and horse meat doesnât even taste good, beef is better, why are we even doing this- horses werenât a good time.
They likely also kept some kind of poultry, I think chickens or quails. I think they found those the easiest, and kept them around for convenience, and because they werenât losing anything by raising them.
I think thatâs my general ranting done. So hereâs some miscellaneous headcanons related to the ones above that may or may not turn into mini rants:
They disagree with a lot of modern farming practises. Specifically factory farming. They get very, very mad at the idea of their beautiful cows being kept in cramped conditions, and spending their entire lives stressed out. They always buy from farm shops, where they can physically see the cows out in the pastures, and even meet the individual whose meat they buy. It feels better to them, though they pass it off as âthe meat tastes betterâ (which it does)
Despite the above, they have a strong vendetta against vegans. Not the act itself, they donât care what somebody else does and doesnât eat, but the spread of misinformation about farming, and the self righteousness a lot of vegans, especially online, tend to hold. That was another thing that anybody with the misfortune of being close enough to hear had to sit through ranting of.
They had two specific sheep that they refused to allow to go to slaughter. A ram named Katsu, and a ewe, who was born with a mutation, leading her to have a second head, named Umaru. Umaru was granted life because Uraume initially assumed she wouldnât survive, and they decided an animal that special should live alongside them. Katsu just got to stick around because he kept the flock in check, and acted as essentially a sheepdog.
Speaking of dogs, I think they ended up with an Akita as a livestock guardian on their farm. I think he was just called âInuâ, but Uraume loved him lots. (I think they also had two shibas as personal protection/alert dogs)
