Hey do you know what rumination is?
Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.
Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.
Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.
I'll say it again:
Rumination is a compulsion.
Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.
I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.
And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.
Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.
Like this was genuinely life changing for me.
Here are some of the ones that were most helpful to me:
Defining Rumination
How to Stop Ruminating
ERP Exercises for Compulsive Rumination
What to Do When You're Triggered
Just want to add that if you're on the spectrum, you may also experience Autistic Rumination, which is distinct from the obsessive variety, despite the two having some overlapping characteristics!
Reblogging to read later.
Normalizing mental health is important
Many people have asked me why I am so open about my anger management issues. I am open about all my mental health and physical health problems because I want to be a voice for positive change, not shoving problems under the rug and hope no one notices. Or dies from ignoring the problem.
The truth is, people react to stressors in different ways. Fight, fight, fawn, and freeze is a phrase for a reason. People like me, our instinct is to go straight to fury. Top it off with badly treated fibromyalgia pain and as one friend once commented I start the day 80% done with the world. Which is very true.
But I try very hard every day not to lash out at other people. Because my anger is not their fault, even if they're annoying me. My anger reflects very little on the situation around me.
Sometimes I am justifiably angry and I will admit when an appropriately assholish target presents itself, I will sometimes give into the temptation to bully the bully. It's a bad habit I picked up in high school I have not completely kicked as an adult. But most of the time, I try to vent that anger on video game mobs for instant gratification and release. It helps but isn't foolproof. Sometimes, I get to a point where everything makes me so angry I shake and am visibly tense. When that happens, I disconnect from the internet and isolate from my family except for necessities. I phrase it as 'I don't want to deal with me, so I don't expect anyone else to.' That's why it's called 'anger management'. So when people talk about 'seeing red' and 'uncontrollable rages', it does make me mad. Because there's no such thing. You know you're angry, you know why you're angry and how you react to is a personal choice with cultural expectations and norms as mitigating factors. I could be abusive, exhausting, and leave a path of destruction in my wake. I certainly have a laundry list of legitimate reasons for being mad. But that isn't the person I want to be, and I try really hard everyday not to be a heinous bitch. I do not always succeed and sometimes I pettily purposely unload. But people 'making me mad' is not an excuse to abuse them. Me being mad is not a reason to hurt other people. It's just not. It won't make me feel better in the long run, and it just causes more problems down the road. So if someone is being abusive, they are choosing to do it. I don't care if it's culturally acceptable at this time. Foot binding and slavery were culturally acceptable for large swathes of history. That never made them right or helpful to individuals or society as a whole. Unchecked abusive behavior isn't good for anyone, even if it gets you engagement. To the victims of these people, please don't expect these people to change. Try to safely get away from them if possible and if not, avoid them as much as you can. You cannot save them, you cannot change them. This is who they have decided they want to be and you will get hurt the longer they are in your lives. I know that reality hurts, because giving up on someone you love is difficult. But as someone who has spent decades dealing with this issue and seen the damage that is done when abusers are given free reign, I refuse to encourage people to stay where they are unsafe because 'not everybody who has anger issues is bad'. Unless that person makes an active effort to keep their temper in check and find healthier outlets for it, they are a time bomb waiting to go off. You do not want to be in the blast radius. Period.

It is Autism Awareness Month,
And I'm gonna say it. "Autism Awareness' sounds like autism is a horrible disease people should be aware of and make sure you get checked regularly for. Like cancer. How about 'Autism Visibility Month'? Or anything remotely empowering for people with Autism? Regardless of what Maggot Brain says, autism and other developmental disabilities are not horrible conditions we need 'prevent' or 'cure'. That kind of attitude has led to so much abuse you wouldn't even believe some of the things. If you really want to know what I am talking about look up chelan therapy and Miracle Mineral Solution (ie sodium chloride). Also, the entire history of modern anti-vaccine movement that has basically convinced a bunch of overwhelmed and undersupported parents dying of a preventable illness is better than being developmentally disabled.
Also, 'Autism Warrior Moms' kindly do shut up. This month is not about you. It about your children. Who deserve more than awareness. They deserve acceptance. Especially from you.
To the autism community, I see you. My son is also developmentally disabled and I will fight all the way to hell to stand up for your and his rights. You are loved, you are important, and you don't deserve half the BS you deal with.

really tired of being governed by a death cult undergoing mass psychosis who thinks its their duty to bring about the apocalypse and im not being hyperbolic
Not a democrat and don't support the democratic party, but the scales are heavily tilted in one direction.
To the millions of MAGA voters leaving their movement suddenly looking for a soft place to land.
Forward this to every person you know who voted for Trump. Especially the Republicans who voted for him three times.

I cannot believe I missed the 9 year anniversary of a Guardian columnist including this fake quote in an article as if it was real.
as a woman in the ozempics era you HAVE to have friends who eat normally (3-4 meals a day, no girl dinner bullshit) and who are always down to going to cafes and eating burguers and fries and stuff, I cannot stress how vital for your mental health it is to have friends with whom you feel free to say you're hungry at any time and with whom you feel free to eat as much as you want
