Lilith appreciation
Ah, another Darkstalkers post. Today I'm talking about my main... Lilith!
Lilith's kind of a tragic character, more tragic than you think. She's a prisoner of a fate she didn't ask for. The only way she can be "complete" is to stop existing on her own.
Lilith's mostly well-known by non-darkstalkers fans due to her association with Morrigan.
At birth, Morrigan's power was split into halves by Belial Aensland, Morrigan's now deceased father. Belial did this to prevent Morrigan from becoming too powerful.
Morrigan's an S-class Succubus, making her extremely special. At the time, Morrigan didn't know how to control her powers. If she didn't have proper guidance, she'd destroy herself and the world. One third of her power was in Belial himself, and other third was in the Makai dimension.
Belial did plan to give Morrigan back her power once she could properly control her power, but Belial reached his demise before that could happen.
Eventually, One of the split halves of energy sealed in the Makai realm gained it's own consciousness, and became aware of it's existence. It named itself 'Lilith'. Lilith had developed feelings. She also had feelings that weren't just envy, but could be described as an instinct to finally return home.
Eventually, Jedah gave discovered Lilith, and gave her own body; a small succubus with a resemblance to Morrigan. In exchange for her freedom, he wanted her to lure the Darkstalkers to the Majisen, his new dimension. Lilith enjoyed her life, until she realized that she wasn't the "original". She was never truly the "original", only a half of someone else. She causes her to have a desire to find someone who'll make her " complete".
Lilith had limited time to find her "other half" before time ran out, and she potentially ceased to exist forever.
Morrigan also sensed that Lilith is a part of her, but she didn't feel like she needed Lilith to the extend Lilith did. Lilith wanted to become complete, something greater than herself, because if she didn't, she might just stop existing all together.
"I can't stand this! I want a real body!"
Jedah also took notice of this, manipulating Lilith into finding Morrigan, so he can extend his power. Lilith knew Jedah was lying to her.
In Lilith's ending, she doesn't get to Morrigan in time, and fades away before Morrigan wakes up. Later, Morrigan's seen with Lucien and Mudo. She has a newfound desire to wear the Isis ring, making her the head of the Aensland family.
In Morrigan's ending, Morrigan senses Lilith's sadness, and absorbs her. This leads to Morrigan becoming more cheerful, having a more positive outlook on life.
Despite all that, In a manga adaptation, Lilith actually doesn't want to merge with Morrigan, as it'll cost her freedom. This is also explored in Cross Edge, a 2008 JRPG.
Lilith and Morrigan do both appear alongside eachother as companions/technically separate entities in crossovers.
Lilith appears in some of Morrigan's attacks in the crossovers, and even appears in Morrigan's ending in Super Gem Fighter/Pocket Fighter.
Now, Lilith's design. Her design is identical to Morrigan's, with obvious differences like her color scheme, and her shorter hair. Morrigan has a heart on her leotard, while Lilith has a diamond-shaped cut-out on her leotard. Lilith's body type is also different than Morrigan's.
Overall, Lilith's supposed to look a bit younger than Morrigan, and she's also supposed to mimic Morrigan's appearance.
While Morrigan's color scheme uses darker colors, Lilith's uses lighter colors. Morrigan's color scheme mostly uses blacks, purples (or pinks), and greens, and Lilith's mostly uses light purples, blues, and cherry reds. I think Lilith's wings are a little sharper than Morrigan's? I dunno, it might just be some of the artwork I was looking at.
You can also tell by their body language and expressions that Lilith's more cutesy, more out there, more cheerful, and more playful compared to Morrigan. Morrigan can come off as more sexy and elegant, Lilith can come off as more childish and naive. I think Lilith's design is perfect.
Anyway, She was originally to be Morrigan's half-angel older sister, who Morrigan would often make fun of. The wings on her head could fold together, so she could hide being a Darkstalker. Her fighting style was going to be different than Morrigan's, and her hair would be involved, taking shapes of random weapons.
They were considering making her a dancing Ballerina that didn't mean to hurt her opponents. She was just dancing, and just happened to hurt her opponents... That's a pretty funny concept, actually.
Anyway, they thought the angel idea was overdone in video games (in japan, at least), so they scrapped the idea.
Lilith's final design was meant to appear more androgynous, but her design is still very similar to her older concepts.
Haruo Murato stated that the team explored the idea of an Otokonoko, he thought he'd be ahead of the times. However, they settled on Lilith's gender being vague or up to interpretation.
Now, With her insatiable curiosity, cheerful nature, enjoyment of life, and strange obsession with blood, Lilith's alot different than Morrigan, yet similar at the same time.
Lilith's traits can be reminiscent of a young girl, she has the innocence and naivety Morrigan now lacks. Lilith's a succubus that's experiencing life for the first time ever.
So basically, Her personality is a blend of innocence, cruelty, and curiosity. I think Lilith and Morrigan are kind of like yin and yang, one side of the same coin.
Like Morrigan, Some of Lilith's winning can be interpreted as more sexual. According to two of her winning quotes, Lilith seems to have a weird obsession with blood, even saying blood glitters with a soft beauty.
Lilith also seems to compliment people's eyes in the game. "Elegant eyes... Please give them to me!!!", and she also compliments Felicia's eyes.
Lilith's quotes can be a blend of cruelty and cheerful, blissful innocence.
Now, her attacks. Her moveset is a bit similar to Morrigan's.
Morrigan has moves called 'Soul fist', 'Shadow blade', and 'Darkness Illusion', while Lilith has similar moves called 'Soul flash', 'Shining blade', and 'Luminous Illusion'. Lilith's attacks are related to the light, and Morrigan's are related to the dark. Despite this, Lilith isn't a complete Morrigan clone when you play as her. They have their differences.
Like Morrigan, At the end of battles, Lilith sometimes changes outfits. Lilith's outfits are bit more cutesy.
I think Lilith, like multiple other Darkstalkers, is a tragic character. She's forced into a tragic fate that she was practically born into. In order for her to be truly "complete", she must give everything up. Yet in a way, Lilith needs Morrigan, and Morrigan needs Lilith.
