Making your own uh-dorbs headscarf!
Things you are going to need to make your headscarf:
2. Ruler (quilter’s ruler preferred)
4. Rotary cutter or scissors
5. Cutting mat (if using quilter’s ruler and rotary cutter)
6. Chalk marker (optional)
-Lay your fabric right side down with your selvedge edge on your left.
-Take the lower right corner of your fabric piece and take it to the top and make it flush with the top raw edge of the piece. It will form a triangle with a fold. Do not cut fold! (see photos)
-Cut off the rectangle piece remaining on the left, leaving you with the triangle and rectangle separate.
-Trim off your selvedge edge (from rectangle)
Take your rectangle piece to the ironing board and fold in half lengthwise to give you a long piece folded in half and press.(see photos) These will be your ties.
-Unfold. Now see that crease? This is your guideline—fold up to this line and press (lengthwise again) and fold down to this line and press. (see photos)
-You should have two raw edges facing inward and your finished edges on the outside–now fold the finished edges together to meet in the middle (where your original crease was) and press.
-Open up the folds and fold/press ¼" in from the side to create a clean finished edge.
Re-fold , now with finished edges.
-Sew around both ties. (see photos).
-Now to make the scarf! Take your triangle piece, and fold it right sides together and press on the fold to create a nice crease. Now unfold.
-Cut off about 1 inch of the left and right corner–this is where you will be placing your ties. (see photos)
-Take your ties and place them on the INSIDE of the folded fabric so they are sitting on the crease inside and peaking out about half an inch. Pin into place.(see photos)
-Now pin all the way around your scarf (folded triangle), but leave at least a 3 inch opening—this will let you flip it so the right side of fabric is on the outside!
Now sew all around (except for where you left that opening, and remember to backstitch when starting and stopping). Also, remember to pivot when you reach the squared off edge where the ties are peaking out.
-Cut off the edge of ties. Now find your opening, and flip the fabric right side out. Use a blunt poking tool to poke out that center point.
-Press the entire scarf. Pin your opening. Sew all around and close that opening. And you’re DONE!!!!!
