growing up i feel like i absorbed the narrative that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets because no matter how much you think you have a bond with them they are still wild and will eventually get you. and while i don't think that's wrong per se it's interesting to me how that folk wisdom boils down to protecting oneself from the unpredictable and illogical beast which will harm you, whose love you can never really trust (cría cuervos y te sacarán los ojos), which completely circumvents thinking about why a wild animal would be pushed to react unpredictably and violently to a known friendly human caretaker who is really ultimately a captor. real animal lovers know the reasons not to keep wild animals as pets have far more to do with the welfare of the individual animal and the perception of their species as a whole by other humans. even if you were a millionaire who could allegedly provide a sufficiently enriching facsimile of, like, a tiger's natural habitat, there's still the question of whether it is good for the beast herself to have a close relationship with a human, how that affects her natural behaviors, what weird unexpected psychological neuroses could be accidentally instilled into the animal (such as how many parrot owners don't know not to pet their parrot's body, which the parrots register as sexual, which triggers hormones that cause them to be distressed by the lack of a mate and present all kinds of psychosomatic symptoms of stress). case in point, the human likely doesn't know everything there is to know about the wild animal's internal experience and might trigger her to defend herself. i guess the reason why i'm going on about this is that none of it precludes the animal's ability to bond with a human. the reason is not that animals can't bond with you (in fact arguably all animals from snakes to spiders to fish are able to experience feeling safe and comfortable around someone who has proven will not harm them), and it bothers me that the onus of why captivity is unethical is put on the risk of oneself being hurt and not the violence that would inevitably be enacted on the animal by captivity itself, neither of which proves animals aren't capable of love or loyalty. subtle distinction! but this is why i think a lot of the underlying principles that are the foundation of animal rights overlap with the principles of like, children's liberation. stewardship does not inherently entitle one to submission from the stewarded

"Blackbird" - personal work, inspired by my hometown. Blackbirds are my favourite - they sing so beautifully.
