Hello Ladybuggers!

Happy Spring! As the time in our space at 1321 Powell Street has come to an end, we want to THANK EVERYONE who has been involved with Ladybug House over the last year. The support has been truly felt and provided us with the motivation to keep it up. Chinatown has been a great home for our vision and we thank the neighborhood for their feedback and kindness. Ladybug House (Justin & Vinnie Smith, Taeer Maymon) will continue working on future projects that we will share through this platform. Please stay tuned!!

Ladybug House started as a year long project with the vision to provide a non-commercial space for Bay Area's artist community to congregate, collaborate and celebrate each others work. As this year comes to an end we would like to invite you all to join us for a weekend-long farewell celebration! All of our favorite artist books, prints, tapes and original works will be on display for your viewing and purchasing pleasures along with snacks, music and performances (more details below!). Last chance to visit our Chinatown location, come by and bring some friends! CHARLES GATEWOOD: Vintage Photographs & Contemporary Collages

January 14th - February 6th, 2016 at Ladybug House, 1321 Powell St. (Chinatown) OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday Jan 14th, 5-9pm Please join us for this landmark exhibit by photographer Charles Gatewood. Curated by Justin C. Rhody, vintage prints from Gatewood's classic works Sidetripping (with William S. Burroughs, 1975), Forbidden Photographs (1981) and Wall Street (1984) will be on display, as well as previously unexhibited work including a collection of collages which Gatewood has been focusing on for many years.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: For over 50 years Charles Gatewood has explored and documented the underbelly of the United States. His early work presents an artist who is deeply entrenched in the activity of the streets, whether it's Bourbon Street or Wall Street. With 35mm Leica in hand, Gatewood cleverly navigated the chaos and cacophony of the ever present moment and delivered unto the viewer a mud-strewn and elegant anthropological study of modern life. As a young journalist, Gatewood's coverage of inner-city poverty, social protests and pollution were widely published, as were also his portraits of musicians, activists, writers, artists and celebrities. His documentation of body modification, fetish and radical sex communities is unmatched. From 1998 to 2010, Gatewood produced over thirty documentary videos about body modification, fetish fashion, and other alternative interests. 13 different books have been published on Gatewood's work and since 1968 he has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe. He is the three-time recipient of the New York State Arts Council fellowship and was also awarded the Leica Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Humanistic Photojournalism. Over the past few years Gatewood has transitioned his focus toward creating collages at his penthouse apartment in San Francisco.

Nut's Palace is the collaborative efforts of Malcolm Kenter, Taeer Maymon, Justin Smith, and Marisa Takal. Through painting, sculpture, and most importantly...hor d'oeuvres, they created a nutty mood for hosting, toasting, and roasting nuts. In addition our window display features an extremely miniature version of Chinatown, made by San Francisco native, Malcolm Kenter. Up until January 8th! Keep scrolling for more photos.....
