Although he was not at his cheeriest at this very moment, Derek knew he had to thank all the possible deities for Levi and his ability to keep a conversation going at any given time. āYep. Well, Leviās a nice guy.ā He comments drily and looks out at the rink for a moment. Maybe it wasnāt the best idea for him to be going ice skating with minimal experience around a girl who wasnāt exactly pleased with him. At least if he fell on his ass sheād have something to laugh at. Looking back over at Milaās question, he brings up his hand to signal that he wasnāt the best. āIām.. Alright. I guess. I mean, itās been a while, I might need my memory refreshed.āĀ
Levi took the compliment without argument, he thought pretty highly of his skills, and regardless, he didnāt think Mila could be bad at anything. āGive me like five minutes, Iāll be skating rings around you guys.ā He grins cheerfully. Rubbing his hands together, he nods his head towards the rink. āSo, we good to go?ā He hadnāt quite noticed the tension dissipate, but he was a little distracted by Mila and the fact that he would most likely be spending the majority of his time with her. Derek was in a bad mood, sure, but he knew heād have to get over it once he was around Lacey for a little while.Ā
Lacey frowns at Derek momentarily, wondering how on Earth they were supposed to act around each other tonight. It'll be easier with Mila around, and Lacey's in a fairly familiar environment, but she's not exactly looking forward to it. At the very least, Derek could pretend to be in a good mood like Lacey, but she doubts he'll come around anytime soon. With a sigh, she got to her feet, holding a hand out to Mila. "We're good. See you on the ice," she tells Levi, before leading Mila down to the ice. The boys could follow when they were ready. Derek probably needed more time to put himself together, after all.
Mila glanced back at Levi briefly as Lacey dragged her away, fighting the urge to roll her eyes. She loved Lacey, but the redhead was always trying to make a point, and she actually felt pretty sorry for Derek right now. "It doesn't seem like you really want to be left alone with Derek right now," Mila remarked as she pulled away from Lacey and watched as the smaller girl made her way onto the ice "If you're seriously this upset with him, Levi and I can stick around." Truthfully, Mila would prefer some alone time with Levi, but she's also all too aware of how dangerous Lacey can be when she's in a passive-aggressive mood.

"You might change your mind when I punch you in the gut." Derek mumbled, knowing even if his best friend heard him, the worst heād get would be a sassy look. Levi was usually too nice for his own good. Scuffing his feet, he peers inside, and then, after gaining up some confidence, makes his way inside, Levi in tow. Tapping his hand against his jeans, he spots Lacey and Mila quickly, giving the latter a quick smile. He lets Levi take care of the whole skates thing, knowing he has no idea what heās doing. And when theyāre done, he takes what Levi gives him and makes his way over to the girls. "Hey." Itās a lame greeting, and he has no real excuse.Ā
Levi makes his way from place to place with a bounce in his step - always. He waves at Lacey and Mila, smiles at the girl who gives them their skates and grins when they finally approach the girls. At Derekās crap greeting, he elbows him and keeps up his smile. āHey Lacey, Mila.ā He says before sitting down, watching as Derek sorts out his skates. āSo, are you guys good?ā He asks, gesturing towards the ice with his head. āI havenāt been in two years but Iām thinking Iām going to be awesome. Derek always refuses to go with me when I ask.ā Levi knows heās talking a bit too much, but he worries that if he doesnāt, no one will.Ā
"Hi" Lacey replies, giving the two boys quick smiles. Derek appeared to be somewhat sullen, but Levi appears to have what Lacey assumes to be his usual cheerfulness. She tightens the laces on her skates before replying to Levi's question "I'm rather fantastic, if I do say so myself. So is Mila. Our group spends a lot of time at the rink in winter." Those trips were often Lacey's favourite part of the colder months, and not just because they usually ended with her cuddling with her boyfriend and drinking hot chocolate - although she doubted she should mention that bit. She avoided making eye contact with Derek, and instead continued to focus her attention on Levi. "It's nice that you came along, Levi. You can keep Mila company whilst Derek and I work on our project."
"I'm not bad" Mila corrected, shooting a glance at Lacey "But Lacey's probably overselling me. I'm sure I'm not as awesome as you." She smiled at Levi, glad that there appeared to be no awkwardness following the party. Mila had dwelt on the events on the day following the party, but she had refused to let it take over her life. Zooey liked being a bitch, and she liked making out with people. It wasn't Levi's fault, and according to Lacey, the night hadn't ended that well for the pair anyway. "What about you, Derek? Are you any good?"
With the fact in mind that whatever Lacey Chamberlain wanted, she got, it wasnāt really a surprise that when the suggestion of ice skating even came up, as soon as she liked the idea, it was a sure thing. Derek knew there was still a lingering sense of awkwardness from their last encounter, thus is the reason why he bugged Levi into attending the little outing as well. Sighing as he exited his car, his demeanor was quite difference from that of his closest friend, camera tucked away in his bag, he slouched, his movement towards the entrance lethargic. āDo you think you could be less upbeat with your walk?āĀ
Levi had definitely noticed the tension between Derek and Lacey, he was goofy and had a perchance for being almost ditzy, but he wasnāt an idiot. He also knew that heād only been brought on this little trip so it would be less awkward for the two of them, but really, he didnāt mind. He liked them both. A bounce in his step, he follows Derek to the double doors, humming the last song heād heard on the radio. At Derekās request, he stops, narrowing his eyes. āNo way, no shame in a good mood.ā He replies before turning his head towards the car park, quite sure heās seen Laceyās car.
Lacey Chamberlain knew she was good at many things - and getting people to do what she liked was one of them. She wasn't sure what Derek's ice skating abilties were like, but if the worst happened, he could always just film her. In case of that, and because things were still awkward between the two after their last meeting, she'd invited Mila along. Things between Lacey and Mila weren't that great either, but Lacey figured it'd give them an excuse to patch things up, and besides, Mila and Derek seemed to get on. And Zooey certainly wasn't going to come ice skating. "Thanks for coming" Lacey told the brunette as they laced up their skates "Right now, Derek and I are...well, let's just say, tonight could've been as awkward as Zooey in a proper relationship."
Mila wasn't sure what had happened between Derek and Lacey during their last encounter, and she wasn't really sure if she wanted to know. All she knew was that it had pushed Lacey to call her and invite her ice skating, despite things between them being somewhat awkward as well. Mila didn't mind that much really - she was fond of Lacey (awkwardness aside), and she liked Derek. And ice skating was fun - although she still didn't agree with Lacey and her 'You really need to have more fun and take a break from all that work, Mila' statement. "It's fine, Lacey" Mila, replied, before turning to the entrance with a nod "Looks like Derek's here. And...he seems to of invited Levi."
"Yeah, photos, anything, whatever you think works." Derek nods, trying to keep himself in check even though his emotions had been on a bit of a high after heād said some things he probably shouldnāt have. Even if he had a point, he didnāt want to alienate Lacey, if she avoided him because of it, he didnāt know what sheād do. Sighing, he follows after her, standing and readjusting his camera instead of his clothing. Chuckling slightly at her words, he shakes his head as he keeps a short distance between them, following on with his camera up at the angle he liked best, out into the hallway where photos line up and follow down. He liked that there were so many photos, it made it seem more human. It was simple, it was like.. When hair fell into Laceyās face or if her lipstick smudged or something. A strange thing to believe makes something more real.
He follows on as she speaks, making sure he has a clear view of the photo but finding himself focusing a little bit more on Lacey than he probably should. āShe sounds nice.ā He mumbles as he hits pause on the record. At her words, he shrugs, noticing that she seems a little less lively than usual. āOnly if you wanna, I donāt need to get that much done, I could easily leave or.. Something else. Whatever else.ā He shrugs, looking down at his camera awkwardly before he looks at her. It was a habit, look at his camera, safe in his hands and look at Lacey, dangerous who could easily break him and she probably knew it, but just not to what extent.
"No" Lacey says, shaking her head "You should probably go." Today had just been filled with too many emotions Lacey normally wasn't used to feeling, and with Derek's questions from earlier, she didn't really want today's interview to continue. She frowned at Derek before crossing her arms over her chest and biting her lip "I'll call you when I need you next, alright? You can see yourself out." Maybe she was being too harsh, but it wouldn't be the first time. And she was still a little angry at Derek for what had happened earlier, because, well, how dare he?
Lacey began to make her way up the stairs, but she stopped a few steps up, turning back to Derek. There were so many things she wanted to say, but she didn't know how to say any of them. She didn't know if it was because of what had happened earlier, or the still lingering distance between them because of the last few years, or something else entirely. Either way, Lacey couldn't form the words she wanted to say. Instead, she sighed, giving Derek a quick nod. "I'll see you later, Derek." And with that, she continued to make her way upstairs.
Derek sighed at her words, wondering how heād managed to fall for Lacey despite the fact that she could be frustrating and downright mean. For now, heās given up on getting the real Lacey to come out by force, he just has to let her shine through, like she does sometimes. He has to actually try to be her friend again rather than pushing at her buttons like heās been doing. Itās not him to do so, and heās not going to become someone else to please anyone, maybe not even Lacey. He has a lot to cut out of what heās filmed now, but he can deal with that easily when he cuts it together and he waits as she smiles again, back into the right frame of mind to answer his next question about her family. He knew about them already, of course, but it was interesting to hear how this girl in front of him spoke of them.
As she talks about her family, he nods, watching the camera. Thereās just that natural bit of charm thrown in, and she knows its exactly like sheās talking to the class, rather than him. Itās a little fake, but what is he gonna say now that heās already upset her once? Nothing, is the answer to that one. āWell⦠Now that thatās over⦠Maybe I could get shots of your favourite people in the house or something?ā He asks, lifting up the camera. āIt just adds to what I plan to do with it, plus, you can maybe throw in a memory or two⦠Make it real sentimental.ā He gives her a small smile, hopeful. (Heās hopeful that this all goes well, but mostly he just hopes she returns the smile.)
"So what, photos?" Lacey asks, glad that Derek's questions aren't so...prying anymore. They're the correct amount of curious for this project, and well, Lacey can deal with that. "Regardless of your answer, that's the best I can offer you right now. My parents aren't home, and there's nobody else." She gets to her feet, fixing her dress again and she smiles at him - it's a little bit fake, but it's also a little bit genuine. "Just follow my lead, Blake." She walks back out into the hallway, facing the wall with framed photos all over. After glancing behind to make sure Derek had followed her and was ready to film, Lacey turned back to the wall.

Derek knows itās a mistake to do what he did, but no one ever said he thought about what he was going to say to Lacey as much as he needed to. It was selfish of him to assume that he could bring her back with a few well placed āwould you ratherāsā and a reminder of the friendship they once had through trying to be her friend again. But she was selfish in hiding all the amazing parts of herself away to be this image sheās created - Lacey Chamberlain, pretty, witty, popular, everything expected of her and nothing original. There was no way in hell heād ever accept that of her, just like if it was him sheād call him out on his bullshit too. āThatās not the good stuff, what the heck does that even mean.ā Derek frowns looking down for a moment as she comments about the bad stuff.
"The bad stuff? Whatās the bad stuff? That you used to be friends with me and it was kinda nice for a while? That.. You used to be kind of like everyone else, except you werenāt because you were Lacey and the best person I ever met." He regrets opening his mouth, because heās said too much and he takes a deep breath, his chest rising as he does so before looking back at her and shrugs at her question about moving on. "Talk about your family or something, I guess?" He asks, the frustration still evident in his voice as he checks the camera to make sure the record is on. He keeps his eyes down there again as he waits.
Lacey almost feels pity for Derek. Almost, but her anger takes control. But Derek is there, thinking that the bad stuff in Lacey's life is the fact she was friends for him right up until her early teens. She holds back a laugh, and instead lets Derek ramble on. The best person I ever met. The words hit Lacey like a ton of bricks, and the redhead blinks a few times before her anger returns and she's stuck there, staring at Derek. She quickly fixes herself, because if her years of dating Zane have taught her anything, it's to not forget everything else just because a boy compliments you, and that anger can be really easy to hide. Still, Lacey's next words are coupled with a somewhat harsher tone "We can avoid the questions relating to that topic for a while."
Right, her family. Mr and Mrs Chamberlain. Lacey straightens up, fixes on another small for the class, nd begins to tell Derek things he already knows. "I'm an only child. My mother is called Natalie and my father is called Lewis. My mother is a politician and my father works in one of those fancy buildings in town - Lord knows what he actually does in his job." She lets out a little laugh, as if letting the class in on a joke. "Growing up, my family life wasn't that dramatic. My father was a stay at home dad until I was about four, and after that I had school and a nanny. No divorces, no tragic deaths, no affairs, no sibling rivalry. As extraordinary as I am, my family life is just...ordinary."
Derek knows that there are two ways she could take what heās asked her. He was hoping for something more open, he really was, but considering their whole class was going to see this project, he had to expect sheād at least try to keep the image. But didnāt that get boring? Or tiring? Pretending to be perfection personified had to be hard. In some aspects, he believed that it was a part of her, the way she behaved now, but it wasnāt really Lacey. Not the one he loved. So of course, when her answer comes out like itās scripted to perfection he letās out a heavy sigh. āThat wasnāt what I asked you.ā He shakes his head, leaving the camera alone for a minute.
"I asked who you think you are, without the expectations⦠No one is really all that.. We have good and bad.. Canāt you give me a real answer?"Ā He knows heās pushing it, her just being civilised with him is more than he could ask considering their current social standings. Sheās high up and he doesnāt even know where he is. But the Lacey he used to know was funny, and she was less afraid to get dirt in her hair or ruin make up. Sure, they had been younger, but sometimes he felt like he was talking to a new person all together. In some ways, he loved both Laceyās, but God did he wish the old one would one day make a come back.Ā
When they were younger, and still best friends, Derek had had the ability to read Lacey like a book, and always made her talk about what was bothering her. She'd always known that that was one of the reasons she had loved him like she did, but right now, that ability was pissing her off. At least, Lacey assumed that Derek knew that she was bluffing and calling her out on it because of that. It wasn't hard to see through the half-lie, but not many people called her out on her bullshit. But she didn't want that right now. She wanted to get away with her reply, becaue there was no way in hell she was talking about her true feelings on a video that would be shown to the whole class.
"I'm giving you the good stuff" she replied, shooting Derek a warning look "We can get to the bad parts later." She narrowed her eyes and tilted her head to one side "And what exactly do you mean by a real answer? I'm clever, I'm pretty, I'm witty, I'm popular. I know these things about myself - I'm Lacey Chamberlain, and I know these things. I see myself as all of those things, and, frankly, Derek, wasn't that your question?" She straightened up then, forced a smile on her face, and fluttered her eyelashes for extra effect. She wanted Derek to stop giving her that look. Now. "Shall we move on?"
Unlike Laceyās mother, Derekās was still pretty set on at least having one picture of Lacey and Derek together as children in their living room. He was pretty sure his dad had one too. Other than the pictures with his younger brothers, they didnāt have a whole lot of family photos in their house anymore, the split had been amicable and they got along, but it still sucked, and they both planned on moving on. āIād rather you pick the pictures anyway, even if Iām sure in the end Iāll like some you donāt, it does have to be about you after all.ā He replies, chuckling a little. He takes a seat on the couch, angling his camera towards her, sitting a little further back so he could zoom in and out and not look like a total weirdo filming from below her like that. His eyes darted to her skirt for just a second, and then he looks away. Heās not supposed to do that.Ā
"Stupid questions? Me? Never." Derek rolls his eyes, chuckling and looking down at the camera for a moment, fixing it up before he tries to come up with his first question. Heāll need to ask something that wonāt make her give him a stupid question. Swallowing back the want to ask her a would you rather (he has time), he uses something kind of simple, but at least itāll get a good answer out of her. "Okay.. Who do you think you are?" He asks, but then continues, itās probably not good to just leave it at that. "Like.. Who is Lacey Chamberlain to herself?" He nods, keeping his eyes on the camera so at least then it wouldnāt be totally weird to stare at her like he is.Ā
Lacey raises an eyebrow at the things Derek continues to say, but doesn't bother commenting. The 'are would you rather questions stupid' debate is one they've had many times before, and Lacey's covinced she's won every single time, even if she doubts Derek would agree. Instead, she turned her focus to his other question. Who was Lacey Chamberlain? It was a hard question for Lacey to answer, solely because there were two sides to Lacey Chamberlain: the girl she showed to the world, and the girl that she really was. She's torn, simply because she's spent so much time building up this image, but this assignment was about discovering who the person really was.
But Lacey had been pretending that she was perfect for years so what was a few lies to a camera? She wasn't sure if Derek would notice, but even if he did, what could he do, exactly? She focuses her attention on the camera and flashes one of her smiles, tossing some hair over her shoulder. "I think I'm the girl everyone expects me to be. Clever, popular, witty....beautiful." Her smile grows wider at the last word, and she turns her head to one side, long locks spilling over her shoulder. It wasn't a total lie - Lacey knew she had wit and popularity, and she made damn sure she had beauty. She could be clever, and she figured she was being clever right now. She wasn't lying to Derek, not exactly. She was just avoiding answering the question with the full truth.
Notes: The eight most important moments in Sophia and Zebediah's relationship - at least, according to her. Sophia/Zeb cuteness, with Gabriella/Anthony and Derek/Lacey, plus Levi/his favourite insult. Part 1/2.
The first time Sophia really notices Zebediah is on their first day of freshman year. He's always beenĀ sort of there, and they'd been in the same class for years. They had the weird relationship of being more than acquaintances but not being friends either, and Sophia never payed a whole lot of attention to him.
But she's in high school now, and she's interested in boys and Zebediah's always been cute, plus the previous summer had been good to him. She walked past him on that very first day, arms linked with Gabriella and a tight blue skirt on her waist. Zebediah had been sitting on the steps leading up to the school, and he grinned at the girls when they walked past.
"Looking good, Blake."
Sophia had rolled her eyes and Gabriella had laughed in her ear, and the redhead walked into high school with her best friend on her arm, leaving Zebediah behind, although he never quite left her thoughts.
...
They flirt from that very first day, to such an extent where Gabriella has started smirking and going off whenever Sophia and Zebediah are in the same room. They don't do much aboutĀ it though, because they're only young, and Sophia really doubts Zebediah will be the only boy she's interested in.
Besides, they only ever see each other in school or on group outings, and he's not the only boy who flirts with her. Granted, he's the only boy she flirts with, but it doesn't mean she has feelings for him or anything. No, nothing like that.
But the week before winter formal, Sophia finds herself in a tough spot. Gabriella walks up to her, cheeks pink and eyes glinting with excitement.
"Anthony asked me to winter formal."
Sophia's eyes narrow, because Anthony is two years older than Gabriella, and besides, Gabriella is her best friend. They were planning to spend winter formal drinking the spiked punch and watching the senior boys. It's what they did at homecoming, and it's something Sophia figured would be their tradition until they both got boyfriends.
A disgusting thought enters the redhead's mind, and she folds her arms across her chest "You're not dating my brother, are you?"
Gabriella shakes her head, looking a tad confused at the thought "No. It's just one night." She pouts a little then, and Sophia knows how this is going to end right in that moment "You're not going to say no, are you?"
It's a pointless question, because Sophia doesn't control Gabriella or her brother, but she shakes her head. "Fine. Go to winter formal with my brother. Just note that he's a terrible dancer."
Gabriella laughs, before tilting her head to one side "Who are you going to ask?"
It's then that Zebediah exits a classroom behind Gabriella, and Sophia finds herself smiling a little "I've got someone in mind."
The night of winter formal, Lacey does Sophia's hair, and she wears a champagne coloured dress and golden heels.
"So" her mother begins as she runs a brush through Sophia's hair "Who is this boy exactly?"
Sophia rolls her eyes but still smiles a little. When it came to situations like these, her mother never bothered to be subtle. "His name is Zebediah."
Lacey pauses, before adjusting her position so she's eye to eye with her daughter "Isn't that Zane and Zooey's son?"
Sophia isn't quite sure of her parent's history with Zebediah's mum and dad, and she's not sure she wants to know. But she does know her dad isn't fond of Zebediah's dad, and her mum and Mila seem to share a look whenever Zebediah's mother is mentioned.
"Is that a problem?"
Lacey smiles and shakes her head, tucking one of Sophia's stray curls behind her ear. She leans in quickly then and whispers "I wouldn't tell your father, though."
Zebediah's unable to pick her up, so an annoyed Anthony drives both Gabriella and his little sister to formal. The two spend the entire drive giggling in the backseat, and when they pull up at the school, Anthony looks tense. Truthfully, Sophia doesn't understand what Gabriella sees in him, but she doesn't really want to know anyway.
Sophia ditches them the second she finds Zebediah, who's looking handsome in a suit (no tie.) He grins when he sees her, and Sophia can't help but smile back. He hands her a single white rose when she gets to him, and she takes it, still smiling, before tilting her head to one side.
"You do know that the white rose signifies purity and innocence, silence or secrecy, not to mention reverence and humility, right?"
Zebediah shrugs "I didn't know the colour of your dress and I didn't want it to clash. White and black tend to go with everything, but I didn't think a black rose would be fitting."
She rolls her eyes and he grins again, before taking her hand. They dance, his arms on her waist and her arms around his neck (which is awkward, considering their height difference and the rose in her hands), and they sway. They don't talk much, but Sophia's content, and when Zebediah kisses her cheek at the end of the night, she knows he enjoyed it too.
...
A few months later, they're officially dating, and her mum asks when Sophia is planning on bringing him home. They're having dinner when she asks, and her dad drops his fork on the ground at the question.
Both Sophia and her mum roll their eyes, while the younger redhead shrugs and says she'll bring him over for dinner next Friday. At that statement, her dad drops his knife to the ground as well.
The next Friday, Zebediah does come over, and he looks strangely uncomfortable. He's wearing a dress shirt and pants, and Sophia's heart skips a beat when she opens the door to greet him. She herself is in a black dress with spaghetti straps, and she sees Zebediah's lips quirk up in appreciation.
Sophia reaches up to kiss him, but the sound of a throat clearing behind her stops in her tracks and causes her to turn around. Lacey stands behind them, arms folded and eyebrow raised. "Let's hold off on the kissing for everyone's sake."
Zebediah smartly steps away, and Sophia grabs his hand and leads him to the kitchen, following her mother. Anthony's still upstairs and Lacey goes to get him, but Levi's setting the table and her dad is leaning against the counter. He shoots Zebediah a glare, and it throws Sophia off momentarily, because she's used to her mother being the intimidating one in her parents relationship. Even Levi looks confused.
Zebediah clears his throat and drops Sophia's hand, looking rather uncomfortable under Derek's gaze "Good evening Mr Blake."
Sophia's dad just narrows her eyes - at least, until her mum reappears in the doorway, with a warning look in his eyes. "Derek."
And even though Sophia doesn't like saying it, even if Anthony mutters it all the time, her dad is pretty whipped. So Derek continues to glare, and his voice holds a warning tone to it, but he still greets Zebediah nonetheless.
Dinner is an awkward affair, with Derek and Anthony asking Zebediah the kind of questions that make Sophia want to stab a spoon in her eye. But Lacey plays the polite mother, and Zebediah, with a lawyer father and fashion guru mother was basically raised to have smooth replies and keep a poker face, manages to get through the night.
Levi is strangely quiet, until right after dessert is finished, when he looks Zebediah right in the eye and demands to know why he's such an asshole. Lacey, who wasn't as used to Levi's favourite insult as the rest of them, shoots Sophia's other brother a glare and demands to know why her ten year old son knows the word asshole.
Sophia actually reaches for her spoon at this point.
An hour later, after more tension and awkwardness, Sophia walks Zebediah to the door, apologizing once more for both her father and her brothers. Zebediah grins and says it's fine, and Sophia again tries to kiss him, but this time, it's her dad who interrupts.
Later that night, when she's in bed, he comes and apologizes. She hugs him, because she knows he was just being her dad. She plans on holding him to the whole 'being nicer to Zebediah' thing though.
...
They're sixteen when it happens. They're in her room, and he's sitting on her desk chair while she paces around, complaining about The Nightmare on Elm Street remake. She does this a lot - pacing and ranting in general, but the topic of the remake comes up quite a bit too.
Sophia can sense Zebediah grinning at her, but she ignores him, because he grins at her a lot. She knows that if she faces him, she'll smile too, and Sophia doesn't want that.
But she ends up doing it anyway, because of what Zebediah says next.
"I love you."
Sophia pauses mid sentence, and turns to face her boyfriend of nine months. The pair have been dating for a while, but neither ever said the three words before. Sophia stares at him for several moments, but Zebediah's smile never fades.
Finally, she walks over and kisses him, and it frustrates her she's not even that much taller than him when he's sitting down. But he kisses her back, and Sophia realizes that she feels exactly the same way. She tells him this, and he laughs and says he knows, before pulling her onto his lap.
She kisses him again, and she knows she should be worried about her parents or one of her brothers walking past her room (her parents had enforced the open door policy), but right now, she couldn't care less. Besides, Derek and Lacey themselves weren't strangers to leaving a door open while they made out.
It was weird, walking into Laceyās house like a stranger. Three years didnāt disintegrate memory, of course, he still knew his way around, the place like the back of his hand, floor plan wise anyway. But in three years, things did change. Rooms could move, furniture and decorations tend to change, hell, the house could have gone through a whole renovation, although heās sure he would have been informed of that one by his parents if it had happened. He rolls her eyes at her immediate turning down at his suggestion. She tended to do that, but he couldnāt help but think that sheād be more open to things like that if she wasnāt with people like Zane and Zooey constantly. āWow, fine, be boring, it wonāt make for super great footage then.ā He replies passive aggressively, but then smiles a little, heās not one to get mad at her. He sucks at that.
He follows, making sure the record is on as he makes his way though the house towards the living room, trying to catch any photos as he passes. āYou should let me take a few of these, baby photos are always good to put in documentaries. Plus all the ones I have of you are of us doing weird things, like eating sand or something.ā He comments. When she asks what he plans to film he shrugs a little, looking down at the camera again. Itās a nervous habit to focus on the camera. āUh, I guess I was just going to ask you some stuff about yourself, Iām winging this whole project to be honest, then Iām going to spend a weekend holed up in my bedroom finishing the editing.ā He shrugs. āAre we gonna sit down on the couch or something?ā He questions, looking up at her once. He regretted it. She looked really, really good in that dress. It was easier to stare behind a camera.Ā
At Derek's comment, Lacey recalled all the photos of her that lined the hallway. Once upon a time, there had been photos of Lacey and Derek up there, but Lacey's mother had taken them dow, thinking it would hurt Lacey to see them up there. She had never corrected her mother, and she knew they were still somewhere in the house - like a lot of things that Lacey had from her friendship with Derek. Lacey turns to face him, arms folded. "Just let me choose the pictures. I don't want to be seen doing anything embarassing, like eating sand." Lacey knows that this project is about discovering who she really is, including the bad bits, but she's got an image to obtain. So no embarassing baby photos. Lacey sits down on the couch and nodded at Derek to do the same, crossing one leg over the other. She felt her skirt ride up a bit as she did so, and tugged on it to bring it down, ever so slightly.
Lacey fixed her hair while she waited for Derek to get ready, and her head shot up at a sudden thought. "You're not going to ask me any stupid questions, are you?" she raised an eyebrow at the boy, referring to questions such as his 'Would you rathers?' She didn't know how Derek thought about those kind of things, but she had never asked him directly, instead sticking to making fun and poking holes at the questions. Maybe she'd discover the reasoning behind his questions when it was her turn to do a project on him. Whenever that was.

Derek could say, without hesitation that he definitely loathed Zane. On the way after the party, he was having an internal battle on whether he should start ranting about all of it.Ā Levi was elated after what had happened, although also confused, it was a shame to ruin that. Heād listened briefly to his explanation of making out with Zooey, which heād frowned at, but heād also made mention of Mila. Now that was something he could definitely approve of. By the time the two of them got home, they pretty much passed out on the couches that faced the television screen, and heād woken up to Levi staring contently at it, watching some kind of morning cartoon with a bowl of cereal. A few days had passed now, and heād texted Lacey Ā (heād hoped that still having her number would come in handy). Heād asked when he could come around to film and ask questions, and sheād given a time. He didnāt really have set questions, he wasnāt the type to carry around cue cards, even when needed.Ā
Considering she lived right next door, he showered and changed at a relaxed pace, grabbing his camera off his desk where it was connected to his laptop, previously uploading film from something heād made with Levi in the backyard the day after the party. Calling out to his mother about going over to Laceyās house, he leaves before she can be intrusive and ask a bunch of questions about why heās going there. Stepping onto the pathway, he walks till he reaches her front yard and walks up the path to her door, knocking and staring at the wall with a dejected look. He felt tired, still, for some strange reason. By the time she opened the door, he had the camera lifted slightly, filming her opening it. āPretend youāre on an episode of MTV Cribs. Go.ā He smiled, watching her reaction solely through the camera.Ā
When Lacey had received Derek's text, she'd been surprised, but she'd texted him back a time nonetheless. Prior to the text, she hadn't seen or heard from him since the party, even if they were neighbours. Lacey knew she left him kind of suddenly after their dance, but Zane wasn't the patient type, especially when it involved sex. But Derek was coming over now, for the first time in years. She was just glad her parents were out so she could avoid questions, because she really didn't want to have to have a discussion about Derek Blake three years after the last one. But they weren't around, so Lacey avoided questions, showered, and gotten in her favourite blue dress for the camera.
Hearing a knock at the door, Lacey glanced over herself once more in the mirror, before she made her way downstairs and opened the door. She rolled her eyes at Derek's comment, but couldn't bring herself to be irritated with him - his stupid smile meant that she couldn't stay mad at him for long. "I'm not going to do that, Derek" she announced, before she turned on her heel and marched back inside, knowing Derek would be following behind her. She sauntered into the living room, the living room Derek had been in thousands of times before, but he had never filmed her in there, and he hadn't been in there in three years. But that wasn't Lacey's problem, it was Derek's, she was just an...accomplice. "So" she announced "What exactly are you planning on filming today?"
Lacey's always had this kind of...thing when it comes to her children, where she knows exactly when they're hiding something for her. Maybe it's a mother thing, or maybe it'sĀ a Lacey Blake (nee Chamberlain thing), but it's still a thing.
So even though her three children are pretty good liars, Lacey knows when they're hiding something from her. Generally, it was Sophia and Anthony who would try to lie to her, and rarely ever Levi. Lacey figured it was because Levi was more like Derek than the other two, and Derek wasn't a big liar, and when it came to Lacey, he didn't like to hide things (besides the whole, "I've been in love with you since forever and I'm only letting you know now even though we're seventeen" thing, but Lacey doesn't like to think that counts.)
So when she notices Levi acting strange, she begins to worry. She even calls Sophia and Anthony, who are off at college, and asks them if Levi's sad anything to them. When they both tell her no, she asks Derek, but he's as clueless as she is, even though he's picked up on their younget son's odd behaviour. She calls Levi's school, but everything seems to be normal there as well.
Lacey even considers asking his friends, but Derek tells her that would be drawing the line.
She stills finds herself picking up the phone a few times though, because Levi is her youngest, the only child still at home, her baby, and her maternal protective instincts tend to kick in a lot more when it's about Levi.
One night, she's lying in bed next to Derek, trying to read her book but not quite manging to get past a single line. She's thinking of Levi, who barely touched his plate tonight at dinner and hasn't spoken much to Lacey or Derek in recent days. She closes her book and sighs, before turning to Derek with narrowed eyes.
Derek feels her gaze, and after putting down the script he was going over he turns to face her.
"Lace" he says slowly, and Lacey falls in love with him a little bit more, like she does everytime he calls her that "Maybe we should just, I don't know, ask him?"
Lacey rolls her eyes, before raising a single red eyebrow. "Derek, what would fifteen year old you have done if your parents asked you what was going on in your life?"
He pauses and considers, and Lacey leans forward and kisses him before he can say anything ridiculous.
"He's not going to answer the question directly" she tells her husband once they've broken apart, her green eyes meeting his brown "Trust me, okay?"
Of course, trusting her is exactly what Derek has been doing all his life.
...
It's the next day, actually, when Levi sits them both down and tells them he has something important to tell them. Lacey grabs Derek's hand as a million scenarios run through her head. She feels him squeeze her hand in return, and Lacey finds herself smiling, a real smile, as she pushes hair out of her eyes with her free hand and looks at her youngest son.
Her Levi shares quite a few things with Levi the First, something she owes to Derek, she guesses, and one of them is this look he gets when he's nervous. She wonders if Dereak taught him it, or he saw it in an old video, or it's just by pure chance. Regardless, the look on her son's face right now is scarily similar to the one Levi the First had on his face when Mila went into labour.
"Mum, dad" he begin, not quite meeting their eyes "I've, uh, got something to tell you, and it's...it's pretty big."
Lacey digs her nails into Derek's palm as her mind starts thinking up possibilites. He's addicted to drugs He's dying He killed someone He's divorcing us He got some girl pregnant He's.....
Levi's voice interrupts her train of thought, and she looks at her son and tries to keep her smile on her face, because her son could say just about anything right now. "The thing is, I've discovered that..." he swallows, and Lacey shoots Derek an anxious glance, before turning back to Levi. Levi takes a deep breath and closes his eyes before speaking again, and Lacey almost wants to laugh at what he tells her. Because she was so worried it was something awful, but it's not, her son's fine, and that's all that matters.
"I'm gay."
Levi opens his eyes and looks at them, Lacey and Derek. Lacey sends her husband a small smile, and Derek grins back, and she feels her heart skip a bit. Almost instantly, she starts thinking of the day when Levi meets a boy that makes his heart leap the way Derek makes her heart leap, the day he meets a boy that makes him as happy as his father makes his mother.
"...Mum? Dad?"
"Oh, sweetie" Lacey says, dragging Derek to his feet before wrapping her arms around her youngest, her baby, her Levi "We still love you, you know? The fact that you just happen to like boys..."
Derek interupts her then, wrapping his hands around her torso and grinning at Levi "Isn't going to change that. I mean, if you didn't like Scream, that would be-"
Lacey digs him in the ribs as Levi's eyebrows shoot up "You guys don't care?"
Lacey glances up at her husband, who looks as confused as she feels "No. Why would we?"
Levi grins then, a proper grin, his usual grin, and Lacey is reminded all over again that this is her little boy, even if he's fifteen years old.
"Anthony's insanely good at 'Worst Case Scenario.'"
I should be getting this on camera. Youāre definitely mean. Like, super mean. So mean.
I guess so.
Maybe you can capture my so called 'meaness' next time. I'd remind you that you're just being sensitive again, but I should probably go and find Zane. If you can mange without me, that is.
