In both of the Hydron redemption AUs I'm writing, Devil in the Garden and Ship of Theseus, Lync and Volt survive bc in the former, Hydron never reaches the point of mentally unstable and lashing out required to want to kill them, and in the latter, Hydron's delayed guilt at killing them in the original timeline means he's reluctant to go down the same path in later loops, and in fact part of escaping the time loop requires that he NOT kill Lync and Volt (spoilers i guess sorry).

But in my pending Ace/Hydron AU, Ace saves Hydron from the Alternative when Hydron confronts his father - literally snatches him from the shoulder of Dryoid and escapes with Hydron and Percival seconds before the Alternative blows up and kills both Zenoheld and Dryoid. And that's so, so powerful to me because it's kind of an acknowledgment of the issue with Hydron's canon death - he doesn't deserve to die. Death is not an absolution of his guilt in Lync and Volt’s deaths. He killed them, yes, but his death doesn't bring them back. And he's so young, too young to not have the time to learn and grow and do better.

Idk where I'm going with this. I guess it's a common theme when I write anything plot-heavy involving Hydron; I just can't agree with the canon ending of suicide-sacrifice because he was evil and he killed people and he's not worth redeeming so he deserved to die.

He didn't. He was an abused kid with too much power and too little control (both of himself and of his life), and he probably felt like he had no choice. It was kill or be killed. But that doesn't make it any better - it just makes his death feel cheap and meaningless. Write him out of the narrative. Tie it up in a neat little bow. Ignore the writing on the wall, how much of Bakugan's narrative has to do with redemption and friendship. This one wasn't worth it.

I think part of what makes Hydron a compelling character is exactly the fact that he dies despite not really deserving it. I admit that maybe I feel this way because I've always viewed Hydron as beautifully tragic (his character design is so beautiful but everything about him and his life is so tragic). I wish we could have seen him learn and grow, but, at the same time, I don't particularly hate that he died (not now, at least) because that's part of his own tragedy as a character.

Whereas I'm not a fan of how New Vestroia as a whole was written, I can't deny that death is part of the trinity that makes Hydron a character that draws so much attention: beauty, horror, and tragedy. His design is beautiful; his personality, mental health, and personal life horrible; and his whole arc a tragedy. Hydron could have been better (and I love all the fanfiction where that's explored), but the way the season and Hydron himself were written pretty much set him up for that tragic end of death.

I'm gonna push back on this because my point wasn't that Hydron isn't a tragic character or that he wasn't set up for the ending that he got - my point is more that he didn't need to die for his story to be tragic. He was tragic before he died, not because he died.

Hydron's death is justified by the narrative but it largely isn't satisfying because of the tragedy we witnessed occur before the event: Zenoheld blames him for everything going wrong (Lync succeeding in his mission despite his death, Mylene and Shadow 'dying'); tortures him for it long enough for Hydron to be visibly injured, weakened, and mentally affected; defeats him in a battle where if Zenoheld didn't have Professor Clay's tech on his side, he would have lost to Hydron, then throws him in prison (presumably) to rot. So after all that, the best thing the writers could think to do with him is to have him kill himself while ensuring the death of his father. Tragedy upon tragedy, but given that in the last moment he chose to come to Gus's aid as "payback [payment] for springing him out of jail" when he could have just let Gus die, couldn't they have chosen to let that be a sign that he could be redeemed? Why was killing Hydron the only answer to his character arc? And let's also be clear: Hydron's death is not shown to be tragic. No one mourns him. No one even cares or notices that he was in danger. The music is dramatic, but it's winding down from a space battle sequence and never hits the kind of sorrow needed to imply that the death is supposed to be tragic. I've seen Hydron be compared to Zuko quite often, but his story and character arc is much closer to Azula. And Azula's defeat was given all the weight and tragedy it deserved without killing her. Of course, if Bakugan had the quality of writing and storytelling of ATLA, we wouldn't be having this conversation at all. After all, even ATLA chose not to kill the BBEG in the end - the writers understood that death is not an absolution and Aang's choice to defeat Ozai without killing him (which would have been wildly justified by the narrative) was in keeping with his character. It's really annoying that the Bakugan writers chose to take the easy way out of Hydron's existence, especially when they "redeemed" Spectra in the dumbest way fucking possible (translation: they didn't redeem him, they just said "look he's good now! isn't he a hero!" and apparently that was enough) and then brought him back in later seasons.

So, I saw this image on Twitter...

... and thought of the recent very small discourse around Mira that I've seen recently.

I think I know why these posts defending Mira are suddenly appearing, but I think they completely miss the point of the critique directed at Mira.

She's ASS. Her personality is ASS. Her leadership is ASS. Everything "cool" about her people insist she has is ASS.

Exactly bc she was written by a team of misogynistic writers.

I love Mira, she's a character I am fond about... but she IS ASS. She's only cool for like 2 episodes and then spends the rest of New Vestroia simping for her brother and putting her fucked family first, her actually noble mission second.

Do you know who is actually a cool leader female character in Bakugan? FABIA. FABIA SHEEN. FABIA THE NEATHIAN PRINCESS.

Fabia is literally everything Mira could have been if she was actually well written, and she's ignored at best, hated without reason at worst (and, usually, that "without reason" is actually misogyny), the complete opposite of what happens with Mira.

Mira is written horribly, but, hey, since she appears on the "popular" season and is the most sexualized of the girls, she gets a pass and is defended fiercely when someone points out she's horribly flawed. I see these posts arguing against a supposed Mira slander when the supposed Mira slander is... a fully objective view on her character and her flaws and miserably missed potential.

There's no Mira slander. There never was.

There is Runo and Fabia slander tho. Runo is hated for being a "hot-head" and, damn, do NOT get me started on the way she's painted as toxic in the DanShun fanfics when Dan was the absolute worst boyfriend anyone could have (even other men). And Fabia... Well, all the cool perks Mira defenders see in Mira are actually Fabia's. Fabia is the 16-year-old who freed a people (specifically, her people), Fabia is the character doing her literal best even when she's internally struggling, Fabia is the one who actually acts as a leader to her people and the liberation movement she's the head of. Fabia is everything people say Mira is. But does she get any recognition? I've seen more people shit on her and hate her than I have seen people unjustifiably hate on Mira.

Mira is an ass character, her role and potential reduced exactly because she was written by misogynistic writers. People pointing out she's shit and gets absolute adoration despite that when better written female characters in the Bakugan series itself get hate for less are not slandering her, they're addressing the elephant in the room.

You don't need to defend Mira. You don't need to justify why you still love Mira. Heck, I'm still fond of her because I really thought she was cool when I was 11 years old and was among the first female characters I've seen that motivated me to be more of a fighter. The one who actually solidified my desire to be a fighter was Fabia. But, in my own personal journey, Mira crawled so Fabia could run. And now that I'm an adult, I see Mira for who she actually is, for the real writing behind every action she takes. I can't see her as that strong female character inspiration that I used to see her as when I was starting to hit puberty, but I still appreciate her for what she sparked in me back then.

You can still love and appreciate Mira, but don't pretend she wasn't a horribly written character that doesn't get even an ounce of the criticism that other female characters in Bakugan get for less. And she deserves to be disseminated more through an objective lens.

I came back from my hiatus to share with you guys this post I found on Twitter that is SO LabCrown.

Just think about it... Clay and Hydron are in this weird-ass relationship and Hydron thinks he is the boss just because he is the prince and he can get Clay beheaded if he wanted to. However, HE'S WRONG, he isn't the one in control, Clay is, but Hydron doesn't see it that way.

So there comes a time during sex that Hydron seems to want to have fun by poking at Clay's patience. He's usually bratty, but this time he decided to go an extra step. The usual tantrums he threw as part of their sexy game become a bit more dramatic and he's being worse than usual. Of course, Clay gets mad and tells him he won't give him any dick if he doesn't behave and that, in fact, it seemed Hydron didn't want any that night. Hydron starts whining and begging. "I do want it! I do want it! I can take it all! I'm no weak boy." Clay smirks at seeing Hydron so desperate and falling right in his trap. "Oh yeah? You think you want it and can have it all? We'll see about that."

Clay starts slow and gentle, letting Hydron enjoy it a little before he starts getting rough. He goes faster, he goes very deep, and he's gripping Hydron's skin so hard, his nails are leaving marks on Hydron's porcelain skin. Hydron starts crying and begging him to stop. He didn't mean he wanted Clay to be rough, he wanted to be and feel like a sexy spoiled prince. But now it's hurting. And Clay isn't stopping a second, he even grunts in his ears as he keeps thrusting, "You said you wanted it and that you could take it. There's no turning back now, boy." And the tears seem to excite him more since his speed increased again when Hydron started sobbing. Hydron tries to push him, but Clay takes both his wrists and places them above Hydron's head, gripping them hard and tight. "I said there was no turning back now." And Hydron's dream now turned into a nightmare continues until Clay cums and fills his insides with his seed.

Hydron is hoarse after crying so much and Clay seems so happy with the result. He gave the bratty prince a lesson he'd never forget. "I'll behead you," Hydron threatens in a small voice in an attempt to restore his authority. "Oh, and who will love you like I do? Your father? He hates you. I'm the only one that loves you here, Hydron. If you behead me, you'll be completely alone and no one will give you what I give you. No one will love you like I do." Clay presses a gentle kiss on Hydron's forehead and wishes him a good night—a behavior so soft in contrast to his roughness during sex that it seemed Clay was two different people.

And indeed Hydron doesn't behead him, he falls once again into Clay's manipulations.

And the incident happens again after some time.
