Cinematic Skin is a project on influence over inheritance. I used my favourite films and albums to showcase my place of origin being virtual
So relieved to say my project is complete. I had such a fun time creating this book and have fallen in love with photography. I always pictured myself creating motion pictures but have come to realise this is equally, if not more, fun. Even through all the stress, I loved every moment of this class.
From the 15th of October, my work will be in the Ngā Ara Auaha student art showcase at the Gallagher Art Academy among the work of other creative practice students (if you wanted to go have a cheeky look).
Made some intense changes from mock up to final project. Fell out of love with the idea of text (commentary, poetry, quotes) and decided to go for minimalistic. I think it really paid off, really proud of the work I've accomplished. I also ended up with a couple bonus photos to make the printing process run smoother. YAY SO EXCITED TO SEE HER PRINTED.
The thing I struggled to figure out the most was the cover. I wanted something minimal, I didn't want to have one of my photographs, but I wanted the cover to make sense for the contents inside.
Rodrigo had the idea of making it a cd cover or dvd cover, after toying with sizing I landed on a VHS. The ratios are a little more A4 friendly and it worked well having solid colours.
I tried my darnedest at making the title appear as though it was sharpie. Implying that inside was self recorded tapes of all my favourite cinema and music videos.
Some pages from Tom Pallant’s All My Friends Are Deserted photography book that I’ve used as inspiration for my own layouts.

Here is my very detailed, very specific, very professional layout plan for my final book hehe.
A couple of pages of my mock up. I'm struggling to find balance between design elements and showcasing the photography. I have much more design experience than photography experience so I'm trying not to let that shine through too much and take away from the photos.
Same image edited two different ways, a little trial and error process. Many times where I wanted to rip my hair out editing these XD
Trainspotting inspired photo raw vs edited. Worked with content-aware fill for the first time, did a bit of masking to get all the items to similar exposure, and added a... uh.. yk.. in post after I realised the objects weren't centred around her head. This one was tedious but fun to edit.
Beginning the editing phase of shoot 1 as a lot harder than I expected, I liked my raw shots but wanted to do some heavy editing to make them look more interesting. I discovered Quinlyn Tosh so will use her as some editing inspiration:

playing around with sequencing and layouts. Of course this is a very rough zine of some of my raws from shoot 1. Excited to get out into the field to get the remaining photos for my final project.
With the work that I've done at the nexus and in my WIL, I have fallen in love with photoshop and design so am looking forward to putting together a final design.
Been having heaps of fun at the skate park with my mates, learning about my camera and practicing shooting manual in low light. Playing with shutter speeds has been super fun on my mirrorless camera too.
Went into this class with no photography experience and thinking that I would hate it, but every time I pick up my camera I absolutely love taking photos.
Inspirations
Feeling awfully inspired by Yungblud's new film Yungblud: Are You Ready, Boy?. Watched it in theatre last night. The use of different cameras, colour, costuming, angles worked really well to curate a beautiful piece of visual and audible art.
Yungblud is doing amazing things and he keeps going up and up. This film has made me want to include concert photography I have taken in the past, even though the quality of the pictures isn't there, the soul and art behind them is.
Had some fun in class playing with photographic paper. This is defiantly a design element I am considering including in my final project
Starting to get behind the power of editing. My first attempts at using masking in Lightroom and I think it paid off.
Defiantly going to aim for edit heavy work with my project, trying to turn mundane photos into art though colour and design elements.

Planning my place of origin has seemed to be a difficult task. Living in a town I feel no connection to yet been raised in my whole life has proven that place of origin doesn't have to be physical. What my origin may be is the person I have become due to what I have consumed.
Film and music are two of the most important things to me. Using my favourite albums and films as inspirations might exactly be my "place of origin". Though, there needs to be a common place. I plan to transform my room, my house, and my neighbourhood into my mind palace of all my favourite media.
So, I created a little mood board. Drawing from the colour plates from films like I Saw the TV Glow and Lady Bird as well as albums covers from Boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers, and The Cure. There's also a few shots that I love and want to try something similar with.
