the janitor had locked the gym storage room.
that was the only explanation.
you stared at the door, rattling the handle again while megumi stood behind you with his arms crossed.
"well, aren't you helpful?"
an hour ago, your teacher had sent the two of you to grab equipment after school. somehow, the door had swung shut behind you, maybe the janitor didn’t notice you two, and now neither of you had your phones.
megumi leaned against a shelf, expression completely blank.
silence settled between you.
it wasn't awkward exactly.
being alone with megumi always felt different than being around him at school with others. there were no classmates, no friends, no distractions.
and unfortunately, your rapidly beating heart.
you fiddled with the sleeve of your hoodie.
"how long do you think we'll be stuck here?"
"someone will notice eventually."
"eventually is not reassuring."
he was already looking at you.
megumi immediately looked away.
then, after a second, looked back.
he looked mildly annoyed at being caught.
his gaze lingered on your face again.
and for some reason, this time he didn't look away.
"i never noticed the beauty mark on your eyelid."
your brain completely stopped working.
as if he hadn't just casually dropped a statement capable of ending your entire existence.
he gestured toward his own eye.
heat rushed to your face.
"you've never noticed it?"
"it's been there my whole life."
"why are you looking now?"
the question slipped out before you could stop it.
for a moment, neither of you spoke.
then megumi rubbed the back of his neck.
a habit he only had when he was uncomfortable.
you didn't believe him for a second.
your heart pounded louder.
his ears turned slightly pink.
"maybe i notice things about you more than i used to."
you forgot how to breathe.
megumi looked equally frustrated with himself.
the room suddenly felt very small.
much smaller than it had ten seconds ago.
megumi let out a quiet laugh.
but enough to make your chest ache.
"and yet you're the one noticing beauty marks."
the sharp edges disappeared, leaving only something warm.
something that was definitely dangerous for your sanity.
the sound of footsteps echoed outside the storage room.
someone unlocked the door from the other side.
you should've felt relieved.
instead, you found yourself glancing at megumi.
he was already looking at you.
and this time, when he noticed, he didn't look away.
but there was the smallest smile on his face.
and somehow, getting stuck in a storage room didn't seem so bad anymore.
