The coffee shop around them was pretty quiet, all things considered. Which was expected, considering that it was an early morning on a Wednesday.
Not many people were in the shop besides them, save for the few workers that were getting their much needed coffee before their shift or the two clearly exhausted college students tucked into a corner of the building, hunched over their laptops.
Gavin groaned softly, leaning his head against Freelancer’s. “Why must we have this date so early? The birds aren’t even up yet.”
Freelancer chuckled, slipping their hand into his which he reciprocated with a light squeeze. “Because both of us are too busy the rest of the week, and we haven’t had much time together recently.”
Gavin sighed, knowing that they were right but deciding to complain anyway. “That may be true, but I think we were both a little out of it when we decided that this was a good idea.”
“Maybe. But it’s a bit nice, don’t you think? We’re not always able to spend our mornings together.”
The daemon hummed, acknowledging his partner’s sentiment. “I suppose you’re right, Freelancer. Our schedules have seemed determined to keep us apart for as long as possible. They can’t do it forever, though.”
Freelancer nodded in agreement, a soft smile spreading across their face. The pair’s schedules had been hectic recently, both getting up at odd hours and returning even later. The most they could do was eat dinner together before passing out on their couch or in bed, so the somewhat impromptu coffee date was a nice change of pace for both of them.
The customer ahead of them finished ordering and stepped aside, allowing for them to go up to the counter next. The coffee shop was close to their home, so it was a place that they frequented. They both ordered their typical drink, and Gavin, as usual, made a face of exaggerated disgust when Freelancer gave their order.
As the two stepped away from the counter Gavin’s hand slipped away from theirs to wrap an arm around Freelancer’s waist, pulling them into his side.
“I truly have no idea how you drink that stuff. It can’t possibly be as good as you claim it is.”
“Hey! It’s incredible, thank you very much. You would know if you actually tried it for once, rather than judging it from afar.” Freelancer nudged their head gently against Gavin’s, a smile on their face.
“I know it’s bad without having to taste it. Quite frankly, it shouldn’t be legally acceptable to be sold to people,” Gavin replied.
He constantly teased them for their choice in drink. It was a thing that he’d done the first time they ordered it, and ever since then he always, without fail, brought up how ‘disgusting’ the drink was. It was something of a running gag between the two, Gavin would judge and Freelancer would act offended then attempt to get him to try it to no avail. It was silly, but it was them.
Once they’d gotten their drinks, they took a seat at a semi-secluded table and took small sips as they talked about nothing in particular. Work, their studies, the new TV show they’d picked up two weeks ago. It was domestic, and both of them savored these moments, Gavin especially.
Sometimes, he’d just simply sit and think about how much his life had changed since he’d met them. Never in a million years would the daemon have guessed that he would meet the person he planned to spend forever with. He never thought that he’d wake up every day and see their beautiful face and be filled with nothing but love, happiness, and warmth. Every day, he thanked the universe that he was able to keep them, and every day he spent every moment he could proving that he deserved to.
As they were talking, Freelancer got distracted by something happening outside the coffee shop window. Their eyes darted to it before their head turned to watch the scene more carefully. Gavin didn’t know what they were looking at, and he didn’t care, quite frankly. He took the chance to admire them, so relaxed and carefree, and gorgeous in the early morning light.
A soft smile spread across his lips, one that always found itself present on his face when they were around. His eyes eventually drifted down to the table between them, more specifically, to the drink order he always judged them for.
There was no doubt in his mind that the drink would taste horrible. The strange mix of flavors that was poured into the thing was surely nothing pleasant to anyone. But then again, Freelancer did enjoy it, enough to drink it every time they visited the shop.
He let out a soft sigh, giving into the urge that had pulled at him every time they had offered him a sip in the past. Discreetly grabbing the drink while they were distracted, he took a sip, expecting to hate every bit of it, but it was surprisingly pleasant. Not his preference, but certainly not as bad as he had made it out to be.
Gavin wasn’t quick enough with his taste test, though, and Freelancer turned their head back just in time to catch him sipping the drink. Their mouth dropped open, an incredulous laugh leaving their lips at the sight.
“Really?!”
Gavin’s lips pursed when he realized that he’d been caught. He swallowed quickly and set the drink back down in front of them. “What?” He said casually, as if he had no idea what they were talking about.
Freelancer scoffed, “What do you mean ‘what’? I thought you hated my order!”
“‘Hated’ is a strong word. More like…silently judged.”
They rolled their eyes lightheartedly. “It was not silent. You literally gagged every time I ordered it.”
“Maybe. But it was silent gagging,” he said with a chuckle.
Freelancer laughed as well, shaking their head at him. “Well why would you drink it if it was so ‘bad’?”
“…You like it,” he admitted quietly, “And I like you. And I want to understand everything I can about you, even your odd choice in drinks.” Gavin smiled, his voice sincere. “Besides, you like me, so the drink couldn’t have been that bad. You definitely have good taste,” he said with a wink.
A smile broke out across Freelancer’s face, one they couldn’t hide. They could feel their cheeks heating up at his words, and they quickly covered their mouth in an attempt to hide just how giddy he had made them feel. Gavin smiled even wider at that, loving seeing that expression on their face because of him.
His hand reached out, wrapping gently around the one covering their mouth and slowly pulling it away.
“I like seeing you like this,” he said softly, before leaning in to kiss them gently on the lips.
Freelancer reciprocated the kiss immediately, their eyes fluttering shut as they savored the feeling of his soft lips against theirs.
Gavin slowly pulled away after a few moments, licking away the residue liquid from his lips. It tasted of the drink and something that was purely them. A taste that he’d remember for the rest of his life.
The couple stared into each other’s eyes for a few quiet moments, simply soaking each other in. Eventually, Freelancer exhaled softly and leaned back in their chair.
“So, what’s the verdict on my drink?” They asked.
Gavin hummed, pretending to consider their question for a moment before answering.
“…I’ve gotta admit. It’s pretty good.”
“I told you!”
