Kyo’s words take Tohru back for a moment, the teen simply staring at him. Even though she did not really know him that well, there was something…different about him. He seemed to have been able to pick up on something only really Uo or Hanajima could have, and those were people who she’d known for years now. He seemed to have pick up on Tohru’s tireless efforts to always be a ray of sunshine, the perfect image of the smiling girl her mother adored so much. How…How could he?

“I…I know that and I do! I feel all sorts of things just like everyone else! So please, don’t worry about that!” There seemed to be a desperation in her voice, a desperation to sweep his comment under the rug and reassure him she was okay. Was that why her heart was beating so fast? Because someone seemed so close to learning the truth behind her? The truth that Tohru Honda was just a sad, scared little girl desperate for connections and joy after everything had been taken from her? The image she knew to be true for so long but was so afraid to admit to herself and anyone else?

“Mom’s name…?” Another thing he said that seemed to put her on edge just a bit, Tohru’s hand clasping over her heart. Normally speaking of her mother had been so easy, and if anyone normally asked she’d answer instantly and with a cheery smile. But with Kyo…that didn’t seem to happen. “Kyoko…My mother’s name…was Kyoko Honda…”

hm. well, he didn’t quite believe her. but kyosuke wasn’t about to push her on the topic. after all, it really wasn’t his place. still. it felt like she was avoiding the topic. not that he blamed her or anything. kyosuke was just sticking his big fat nose where it didn’t belong. “right, will do.” and he let it drop, just like that.

she sounded a bit caught off when he asked her mom’s name. maybe that was another button he shouldn’t have pressed. but kyosuke wanted to know, so he could pay his respects--

“Kyoko…My mother’s name…was Kyoko Honda…”

his eyes widened, pupils shrinking in shock. instantly, his face blanched, and he dropped whatever he’d been holding in his hand ( fiddling with a pen no doubt, as kyosuke often did because he could rarely keep his hands still ). the sound of it clattering along the desk was so far away in his ears.

KYOSUKE IS PAN-ROMANTIC AND DEMI-SEXUAL: meaning he’ll fall romantically for people regardless of gender, but he’ll only have sex or sexual encounters with people he trusts on a deep emotional level. my man has been through it ( to put it lightly lmfao ), so sex kind of isn’t on his mind. he avoids it if he can, he’s got a lot to unpack before he’ll join someone in the sack ( haha )!! please be patient with him: alternatively, don’t, that’ll be fun to explore too!!

“ how are you so happy all the time? ” kyosuke probably doesn’t realise how rude or blunt that sounds, but he’s genuinely curious as he ASKS TOHRU this question.

“ Oh!” The question causes Tohru off guard, more for the sudden and random asking of it than the actual question itself. Putting something like what he was asking into words wasn’t exactly simple. She was the way she was for a lot of reasons, reasons that were layered and layered from years upon years of experiences. 

Though, she decides to respond to him with what she wants and currently believes is the main reason. Her eyes soften and her lips curve that typical Tohru Honda smile. Her voice is full of sweetness as she then answers the question her orange-haired classmate had randomly asked during that lunch period.

“Well…I suppose you could say I’m so happy all the time because I choose to be. I choose to always look on the bright side of things, seeing the sun through a rainstorm. It was a trait my…mom always said was one of my greatest qualities. I know she wouldn’t want me to not be happy.” What she fails to mention is how keeping up her happy smile wasn’t always easy, how it pushing through the pain and grief of losing her parents was a daily struggle. It was a struggle she faced with that smile, the smile of the truly lonely girl who feared being left behind again and again.

...She chose to be? Kyo supposed that made sense: still, something about her happiness, it felt--- not fake, nor put on. It was clearly genuine, he just sorta wondered... if maybe she was forcing herself. Kyo stared down at her gingerly, then considered, before he spoke plainly,

“But, you know you don’t always HAVE to be happy, right? You can let yourself feel other things.” maybe he was toting a line he really shouldn’t be: after all, he and Honda-san weren’t exactly close. They were simply classmates. Still, something about her felt familiar, in a way Kyo couldn’t entirely grasp. Like a hazy, faraway concept that ached in his mind and in his bones....

“Good morning to you too, Kyo! I hope you slept well!” She beams back to him, Tohru’s cheery sunshine ever present despite the gloomy atmosphere around them. While she wasn’t the biggest fan of rain, she did look forward to the sun and potential rainbows that would appear afterwards. The girl has fond memories of seeing those miracles of nature with her mother.

“Even so, it’s better to be safe than sorry! The last thing anyone needs is to come into school soaking wet and risk catching a cold, right?” God, if Tohru got sick then that would just make things so much worse. That’s why she always carried her umbrella with her to school, just in case a surprise weather change would happen. 

“Thanks, you too?” he sounded a bit bashful at her mentioning she hoped he’d slept well. Jeeze, this gal. No one had really said that to him before, then again, Kyo supposed he did hang out with more guys.... They weren’t exactly known for talking about sleeping or their dreams.

“So that is what this land is called…how interesting…” Salem knew this wasn’t Remnant. That much had become obvious due to her inability to sense any Grimm in the nearby surrounding areas, along with the way the people dressed and spoke. The immortal queen is still insure how she got here, but like usual, she would try to make the most of this intriguing opportunity.  

“The place where I come from I’m certain you have never heard of, but tell me young man, what is your name?”

“Hah? What’re you talkin’ bout?” though even as Kyosuke asked this, he didn’t really expect an answer from her. Okaaay, this lady sure was-- different. Kyosuke did his best to appear pleasant, because his parents had always taught him to respect his elders. He was kinda just assuming she was old, given her hair colour, n’her weird speech patterns.... Maybe she was from China or Korea?

"I'm sure our little Satomi will learn very well from you, Kagura," he couldn't help the little chuckle that left him at her words. She had a way with dramatic flair, he'd give her that.
