The hands of a man tell a lot about him. They tell you what he held dear. They tell you who he helped pull up. They tell you about the work he did. But, what they can never tell you is the depth of passion and love behind those actions and all he held in his heart. Only those he touched can tell you that, because they have experienced the touch and impact of his love. I️ am so blessed to have had Patrick McKirahan extend his hands and his heart to me. He saw me in need of a dad and he became one. He saw me in need of a home and he shifted his own in order to make a place for me. Not only for me but for anyone who needed one. I️’ve learned so much from him. I’ve learned how to be a better human being simply because we should be. I’ve learned that we all have the responsibility to care for those who are marginalized and oppressed. I’ve learned to be involved in community. I’ve learned to be a better me. I’m so glad he invested in me! His hands held me up in one of the loneliest moments in my life. His hands guided me through life experiences and stages I️ couldn’t navigate on my own. While I am beyond saddened to hold his hand as he is near death, it is an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to do so. I’m a firm believer that God is infinitely wise. Sadness is here, but so is joy. Tears may flow, but they will do so while the same hand that holds my dad’s hand will be raised to my Father in praise.
