“So.. W-would you allow me to get to know you..?” Yejun asked before shaking his head and blushing in embarassment, “Wait- shit that sounds awkward sorry uhm-“

Yejun tried to think of something different but he was shaking because out of embarrassment and he stuttered, slapping his hand to try to calm himself down.

“Screw you nervousness-“ He quickly thought to himself.

Again, Minhyuk found himself surprised to hear the other admit to his hatred. It wasn’t a foreign concept to him, but it wasn’t something he would hear admitted out loud either. He ran his fingers through his hair with his free hand, the other still holding onto the cat. Perhaps he seemed less threatening with a fluffy animal in his embrace.

“I mean, I don’t usually talk about how I steal things because it might put me in a dangerous position. You might ask for my help now but there might come a time when you may be able to use my methods against me… I’ll tell you as much as I can, I guess.” He pauses, his eyes scanning through the crowd. “Not here, though. We’re way too open out here. Let’s take this conversation elsewhere.”

Minhyuk couldn’t help but laugh with how nervous the other as being. He expected someone who was ready to fight him, what with the sudden way Yejun appeared and called him out for stealing. That wasn’t at all how Yejun presented himself now. “I’m not opposed to you getting to know me more, in case you were worried. It’s not exciting though, and it’s not like you need to get to know me to know how I operate.”

Heaving another sigh, he gently pats Yejun’s shoulder in an attempt to calm the other down. Did that come out a bit awkward? “Try to calm down a little. You won’t last very long in my world if you panic so easily at the idea of confronting someone. Are you sure you’re up for this?”

there was a reason why yejun stayed behind a screen, this was one of the reasons.

he could have stayed behind a screen and hacked into minhyuk’s phone, but nope. he’s here. face to face with him. 

yejun nodded, “we can talk somewhere else..” 

he heard minhyuk’s soft laugh and he tilted his head in confusion, “why are you laughing?” was he laughing at him because he was being stupid?

the illusion of a mask he always had was already gone so he couldn’t go back to that idea. 

the boy smirked, “Oh no… I find it quite exciting to find out more about a person and how it reflects their work.. say if their actions are just to mask the work they do~” 

Yejun then felt Minhyuk’s hand on his shoulder and he was confused, no one ever did that to him, it wasn’t awkward.. it was just.. weird in Yejun’s eyes. 

“Sorry, my life has always been behind a screen.” Yejun explained, “But don’t worry, I’ve always been up for this.”

The boy bowed slightly and smiled, “I’m Jun.”

He wasn’t completely lying, Jun was one of his nicknames but Yejun was his real name, which he didn’t feel comfortable with sharing with this customer he’s never seen before. 

of course, the regulars knew his name because he performed every… 2-3 weeks? 

but this person wasn’t a regular. He was a new customer who has never been here before so.. if he becomes a regular, he’ll find out his name soon enough. 

what a miserable conversation. as much as jeongguk may have changed during his time away from the island, in busan with his family, he still wasn’t one for small talk…or talk much in general. aside from that, he felt like he got worse day by day, regressing where he previously made progress, like myeongcho just sucked everyone dry of every good thing. he would need to suck it up and talk here, though, calling upon his old extortionist skills from phoenix, now lost to the abyss of memories he tried not to call upon.

he nodded, but he couldn’t imagine just standing around doing nothing during slow times. jeongguk was a restless person, and the mpd was a suitable workplace for him if only because no one ever had time to breathe. he preferred it; he had time to relax after work, which he had little time of, because he worked so much– by choice. part of him knew they would never outpace the crime on the island, but it didn’t stop him from trying.

“what do you study, if you don’t mind me asking?” he tried to keep things up, as casual as possible, not robotic as was natural for him. he wanted to ask an array of questions that would surely give away his intentions: how old are you? what do you do for fun? when do you usually work here? when is your shift over? what are your skills? do you know of anyone hacking in this building? he didn’t ask any of them, keeping his curiosity to himself.

he bowed slightly in turn when jun introduced himself, not bothering with a nice to meet you because it wasn’t really nice, it was just an event– a necessity. he had no real reason to doubt this barista’s honesty, but jeongguk’s paranoia always ran rampant. for now, he held fast to his skepticism, but took note of his name. jun. he would remember his name, and unfortunately, visit this cafe often and make conversation with everyone that worked here. how excruciating.

yejun quietly listened as this man talked to him. in yejun’s eyes, he seemed like someone from the MPD or another extortionist so he had to be careful with what he says so he doesn’t expose himself as much as he has already done. 

he could tell him about his normal life, of course, but his hacker life… no way he could. “I study music…” Yejun said quietly, “do you study anything?” 

he also had to ask a couple questions himself, and then do some research on this man who seemed to be interrogating him.  

sooner or later, he would have to get back to work instead of talking to this man, as a line was starting to form at the counter. 

“I apologize, jeongguk. I have to get back to work. I hope to see you around though. Have a nice day!” He said before turning around and making coffee once again. 

this was already becoming a strange day for him. he already got the info he needed, and now he’s getting interrogated. what’s next- will he see this man at school or something? 

“before i agree to this,” which he didn’t really want to do, but hey, he felt bad for the guy, “who am i hiding you from? i don’t want to be dragged into some shit here.” for all he knew he could be an accomplice for some major crime he would much rather not get caught up in. for starters - he hated the mpd and preferred to keep his distance between him and any cops as far as he possibly could. 

yejun hated to show that he was scared. he thought it would make him seem weak and vulnerable. his father always made fun of him for it. “be a man” he said, “stop crying like a little girl, you’re a man.” 

oh just thinking about his father made him clench his fists but he calmed down with one breath, unclenching his fists. 

he looked up at the man, “its just some random dude from the bar…” he didn’t want to explain his whole story as it would take too long. yejun could still hear the man’s footsteps coming closer and closer to their location. 

quickly, he said, “i apparently talked to ‘his’ girl and i accidentally took his phone but i gave it back to him i promise! h-he got mad and started chasing!” 

“and look where i am now..” yejun thought to himself. 

“no police are involved i swear-“ he quickly said just in case that was the thing holding this man back from helping him. 

yejun’s hands started sweat as he heard the man shouting out, “where’s that wimp?!” and “he wont get away from me!” 

the footsteps getting faster and faster and closer to them. 

Min gets out of his trance and once again takes up Yejun’s hand, this time holding it a little tighter, not caring as to if anybody is looking at them. “The park?” he questions, this time with a smile on his lips. “I guess I’d prefer my apartment, but we can go to the park if you want” he responds, caressing the other’s hand softly.

Once Yejun heard Min’s quiet and confused voice when he said the park, his hands started to shake. 

“i fucked up didn’t i…?” He thought to himself.

He diverts his eyes away from Min’s in embarrassment, thinking that he said something wrong. 

“this is the shit i go through to make a friend..” he thinks. 

Yejun was starting to think this was a mistake, that he had made so many mistakes within the first couple minutes of the two hanging out. 

Although he was freaking out on the inside, he was still able to hear Min when he said he would rather go to his apartment. 

Quickly, in fear that he may have pushed him the wrong way when he suggested the park, he nodded. 

“Y-Yeah that’s fine! We can go to your apartment!” 

Then he looked down at his feet, realizing that Min was once again holding his hand. Yejun didn’t know what else to do but to blush and to agree with whatever Min said, just so that he could be friends with the popular man. 

Yejun was starting to get even more nervous than before this “date”, he didn’t know what shit he was getting into or what shit he had cause and that terrified him.

“i’m jeongguk,” he decided to introduce himself, but he didn’t offer a handshake, or anything of that sort. he just figured if he made the move, he’d get the other’s name in return, and then he could track him down and look him up later.

by that standard, however, he should go around and introduce himself to every person in the cafe, which would likely be highly suspicious. starting out with the employees and regulars seemed safe enough. god, he was going to have to become a regular himself, wasn’t he?

Yejun let out a laugh, “To be honest, I like focusing on my job rather than going on my devices. I have time for that after doing my homework and projects.” 

While talking to the man, he took out extra cups from under the counter, restocking them along with the lids and straws. 

He continued listening to the man but he somewhat felt awkward because the customers never really talked to him unless they wanted extra free stuff like another cup of coffee or something. 

Yejun also never wore his name tag, which he really should but he didn’t want everyone he came across to know his name.

Moving on… when the customer, now known as jeongguk introduced himself, yejun tilted his head. 

should he actually give him his name? maybe.. but just in case of anything.. 

The boy bowed slightly and smiled, “I’m Jun.”

Minhyuk blinked at Yejun’s final conviction, pausing his playdate with the cat to turn his head slightly, looking up at Yejun with surprise embedded on his face. “Be friends… with me?” Now, Minhyuk had no idea how to react to that. “I mean, we’re chatting right now, technically.” He slowly stood up, picking the cat up in his arms and properly facing the other. “I seriously don’t get why you’re talking to me and begging like that.”

He released a sigh, scratching his cheek a little. “Alright, fine. What do you want?”

Yejun sighed, he knew he was being a bit much but he did what he had to, to get information. 

“Yes, I hate my dad with every single atom in my body.” He said with a frown. 

It was true after all, he did hate his dad and wished he would stop using his money for stupid things and just help others with it. 

When Minhyuk sighed, Yejun smiled. 

“I just wanted to ask you some questions about that day.. When you took the money.. M-Maybe even get to know you?” Yejun said with a smile. 

If he could get to know Minhyuk instead of just making clueless observations, he could tell his true intentions and see if he’s on his side. 

Deep down, Yejun really hopes that Minhyuk is on his side so that he doesn’t have to stop talking to him and he could have an ally in this sorta internal war between him and his stupid father. 

If at least one person would help him, that would be amazing. he wouldn’t be… alone so to say.

Min takes a sip of a cocoa as he waits, and then he sees the person who asked him to hang out, he stands up, smiles at the other and drives a hand through his hair. “Artemis” he says with a calm voice, he reaches out and takes the other’s hand, lifting it up a little as he holds it softly. “Where do you wanna go?” he asks, assuming the other doesn’t want to stay at the café.

yejun was sorta nervous, he redid his hair at least six times that day and he debated on every outfit he had but he just settled for a white shirt and a bomber jacket with black jeans and some high cut converse. 

he didn’t know how he was able to ask Min to hang out with him. he was an average antisocial and somehow he got a handsome extroverted person to hang out with him! 

but right now he was questioning why min agreed to it- yejun knew that min must’ve been somewhat popular and lots of people wanted to hang out with him, so it was probably by chance that he was able to hang out with him and possibly become friends with him… 

the two were supposed to meet at a cafe and yejun was running a bit late, when he arrived though, he saw min sitting down and drinking something. when min gets up and holds his hand, he freezes for a moment… he’s not used to someone holding his hand.. or human contact in general.

there was no sign of fear– instead, the barista called his name again, so he turned on his heel and stepped up to the counter, taking his drink. there was no one else in line, so he lingered for a moment. it might make sense to make conversation and see if there was any information this man might let slip, even if it was just about the barista himself.

“it’s cold out today. bet it’s nice to be warm in here.” god, jeongguk was not one for small talk, but he needed to try.

yejun was about to step away from the counter when the man spoke. 

“was that to me?” he asked himself before turning back slightly. 

the boy debated on answering back, what if that man wasn’t talking to him? what if he had some sort of earpiece and he was talking to someone else? he didn’t want to make anything awkward!!! 

“no harm in trying…” he thought before turning towards the man again and nodding, “i suppose it is, sir. but it gets super boring when no one comes out of their houses for a hot coffee or a hot cocoa.” 

yejun was worried that he made the situation awkward and he had said too much, so he quietly took out a towel and he started cleaning up the counter to help his nervousness. 

he was a nervous boy okay? he didn’t like making mistakes in social interaction, which is probably the reason why he didn’t have many friends, or talk to anyone much. 

wisely there was no one else outside, or so he had thought, as he turned the corner he almost walked straight into someone else who seemed to be in a bit of a rush. “do you mind?” he huffed, eyeing the other person for a moment, “no need to rush. look where you’re going.” 

yejun was starting to get tired, someone had been chasing after him for hours now after he had one, accidentally took their phone and two, talked to their supposed “girlfriend” 

all of this just for some information. 

sooner or later this guy was gonna be back and find him somehow, but then he ran into someone. 

“fuck.” he thought to himself. 

yejun quickly apologized, “i-i’m so sorry.. u-uhm..” 

the boy was panting, he could hear fast footsteps coming towards them. his heartbeat was speeding up and he couldn’t think straight. 

“c-could you help me hide? p-please?” he asked the man quickly, “i-i’ll pay you back! just please help me!” 

he didn’t know what he was doing, but he knew he just had to get out quickly. hopefully this person would help him get out of this predicament that he had gotten himself into. 

it was dumb of him to just ask a random stranger for help, but what other choice did he have? get beaten up by some random dude or just stay safe. in his mind, the second choice rings like a love song. 

somehow and someway, he’ll either get this person to help him, or he’ll keep running and running until his first class the next morning. 

Minhyuk spared the stranger - Yejun, was it? - a short glare, before returning to gently scratch the top of the cat’s head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He stated curtly. “Whatever it is you think I stole from you, I don’t have it anymore.” He rarely kept the things he took, after all. That wasn’t a part of how he operates.

“Now, will you please leave? I’m a little busy.” He stated, giving his full attention to the cat once more.

yejun scoffed and smiled while looking down at his cat, “it’s not that you stole from me… it’s just that you stole from my father.”

before minhyuk could think, yejun quickly added, “I’m not mad that you took from my father.. I’m just glad you did. You took money from him.”

he was really trying to make minhyuk stop ignoring him and playing with his cat so that he could talk to him. 

he just wanted to figure out if he was a friend or a foe. And for some reason, he just wanted to be friends with him. No matter who’s side he’s on, but it would be better if he was on his side. 

yejun couldn’t figure out how to get minhyuk to talk to him it’s either he had to go away and find more info on him, or continue watching. both of which he didn’t want to do. he had no other option but to just be straightforward and honest. which is not like his usual self, since he’s usually very quiet and somewhat beats around the bush. he sighed once again and then spoke.
