How to Correctly Clone Activated Windows Images in Virtual Box
NOTE: use these instructions at your own risk. In case you are using Windows licenses for production, refer to Microsoft license agreements.
This manual is divided into two sections - the first one for creating a blank windows image and activating it, and the second - how to clone blank activated windows image such that it does not require any reactivation.
[1] Create blank windows image and activate it
* Create new machine in Virtual Box main application
* Open your *.vbox file in text editor
* Copy uuid attribute value (without curly braces) from /VirtualBox/Machine
* In the terminal run the following command (where uuid1Â is the one copied from /VirtualBox/Machine, uuid2Â - generated new one):
> vboxmanager modifyvm uuid1 --hardwareuuid uuid2
* Now, install Windows OS and activate it (call this image a "template")
[2] Clone activated blank windows image
* Right click on the machine you just installed and activated in Virtual Box Manager and click Clone
* Give it a new name
* Disable (!) the flag "Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards"
* Press "Next"
* Choose "Full clone"
* "Clone"
* From old *.vbox copy harddisk uuid (without curly braces):
> / VirtualBox / Machine / MediaRegistry / HardDisks / HardDisk
* Replace new harddisk uuid in new *.vbox file with old harddisk uuid:
> / VirtualBox / Machine / MediaRegistry / HardDisks / HardDisk
> / VirtualBox / Machine / StorageControllers / StorageController / AttachedDevice / Image
* Start cloned OS and verify that it does not require activation
