āYeah, no sleeping in, huh?ā Kuzan lamented, thinking of all the times heād ever been woken up prematurely from a nap. Something about curling up on the floor of your office and using your admiral coat as a blanket really seemed to set off the higher-ups.
He shifted his weight from one leg to the other, trying to get comfortable. His arms were going to be killing him after five minutes, though, so it looked grim either way. He inhaled, then exhaled. Itād been a long day.Ā
He glanced at Gabriel. Long day for everyone, apparently.
āWhatās wrong?ā he asked, struggling to move his arm just enough to be able to scratch his nose.Ā āYou catching a cold after all? Need someone to relieve you?ā

āAn hour,ā Kuzan echoed, his eyes widening. He remembered those days. It was usually pointless, it was boring, and the rain was the only enemy for miles. Or the blistering heat. Kuzan used to be really popular on hot days.
He knew it would look like he was about to treat that recruit differently for being a girl, but something about the sight of a little thing shivering and doing her damnedest to keep it together just tugged at his heartstrings. Yeah, it was the military, he knew that anyone going in should expect crappy days like this. So, what? He couldnāt ignore what was right in front of him.
Kuzan moved to her side, between Gabriel and another recruit.Ā āExcuse me,ā he said to them, and then, to Gabriel,Ā āHey, here.āĀ
Lifting both arms above his head, Kuzan propped his coat up and over the both of them, effectively blocking the rain out like some kind of canopy. He took care not to stand too close to Gabriel, using his broader reach to allow the coat to drape over her without forcing her to his side. Kuzan peered down at her and quirked a brow.
āGuess Iām posted up, too,ā he said, chuckling.Ā āYou said an hour, right? Promise? I hate the rain.ā

The young recruit stood guard on the outskirts of where hers and another divisionās platoon were camping for the night. She couldnāt remember for the life of her which other division it was with, however. āAkainu or Aokijiā¦.why didnāt they explain this at the briefingā¦.ā She whispered to herself. They probably did. She was probably just distracted by the fact that it was one of her first big missions where they were honoured to go with one of the admirals. The rain had started not too long ago, yet was already coming down pretty heavily and with a gun loaded and ready to aim at any unfamiliar face that came by, Gabriel wasnāt even allowed to leave her post for another hour when someone would come to take her position. It was cold, dark, wet, unpleasant, and just a bit nightmare inducing. Why was she the only one out here without a rain poncho?? Or an umbrella at least? Oh right. She prepared for anything BUT rain. Rookie mistake. Especially for a rookie.
The meeting had ran late; why they were even having meetings at this hour, Kuzan couldnāt understand. Worse still, he had heard the pitter-patter of rain against the tent well before the meeting was even out, which had made him antsy. It was with one goal in mind - bed - that Kuzan was power-walking down the trail, along the outskirts of the encampment.Ā
Rain, rain -
āRain,ā Kuzan groaned, drawing his coat up to his chin. Dark, damp, his suit was white, the list went on. Thankfully, he supposed, his suit made him stand out to the recruits on guard, so nobody tried to aim a rifle at him as he strode by at record pace. He just wanted to get under a blanket. Holding his coat, his esteemed admiral coat that he was probably supposed to keep clean, up and over his head would have to suffice in the meantime.
The string of salutes began as he passed one guard, then another. Although he was feeling pretty homesick for his bed, he slowed his steps until he came to a stop in front of the guards. He felt bad for not acknowledging them; they were stuck in this rain, after all.
Kuzan lifted a hand from under his coat, feeling suddenly quite sheepish for how he must have looked.Ā āHey,ā he said, raising his voice to be heard above the rain.Ā āThanks for your hard work. I know itās not fun to be out here in this. Iā¦ā
He gave pause, eyes landing on the one recruit that stuck out like a sad, wet, sore thumb. He stared for a couple of seconds, prompting some confusion from the other nearby guards, before wordlessly stepping forward and lifting the side of his coat up and out to provide coverage for her head. It was an awkward sort of rain cover, now, but his height at least made it easy to shield her from the rain, his coat fanned out like a great birdās wing.
āWhatās your name?ā he asked, brow knitting.Ā āEr, maybe I should have started with,Ā āWhereās your coat?ā This is how you catch cold, miss.ā
Gabriel hadnāt been paying attention, certainly not enough to notice the beginning of a long string of salutes from the other guards, too caught up in her thoughts and wishes to be back in her tent, with her macaw, who, despite her endless amount of requests for him to stay in the tent, was up in a tree to keep her company. It wasnāt until she felt the rain that was pounding against her lowered head and back stop, that she lifted her head, all the way up a trail of white and blue to meet the face of the admiral.
With tired eyes, she lowered her head back down with the thought, āAh, Admiral Aokiji. Weāre with his division. Neato.ā There was another moment of silence. āā¦ADMIRAL AOKIJI.ā At that point she straightened up immediately into attention and gave a salute, earning hushed chuckles from the surrounding guards for her delayed reaction before answering him. āN-Navy Seaman Recruit G-Gabriel Caper o-of Admiral Kizaruās 5th Platoon, sir!ā She said, hopefully loud enough to be heard over the pounding rain. Her salute drooped a bit when she answered his next question, talking a bit more quietly with a hint of shame in her voice. āIā¦Uhā¦.I forgot my coatā¦at HQ, sirā¦.ā she straightened up again. āB-B-But I ASSURE you, sir! I am just fine and warrant no need for concern, sir!ā
āWhoa,ā Kuzan said, eyebrows hiking up. He was never gonna get used to that, the formalities. The fortyĀ āsirsā. Maybe he just kept it too casual in his division.Ā
He rubbed his neck, looking perplexed.
āEr, Caper, was it? Chill ā at ease, I mean. Arenāt you cold?ā he asked, trying to remember what it even felt like to be at the mercy of the elements like that anymore.Ā āColdā just took on a different sort of meaning when you were made of the stuff.Ā
He gestured toward her, then, palm open and out.Ā āCan I get you anything? I can dig around for a spare coat, orā¦ thereās gotta be something at camp.ā Exhaling, he sounded exasperated when he added,Ā āI canāt just leave you like this.ā

Gabriel seemed to stop in her tracks. Of course she recognized the ice man. She wasnāt in HIS division at the time of him serving in the marines and was under Kizaru instead but. Boy did she recognize him as she vividly remembered him falling asleep in....odd places. She offered him a baguette from her grocery bag. āBread?ā
āMm?ā Kuzan murmured, lifting his glasses to get a better look. He was posted up on the ground in what he thought had been a decent hiding spot, right between a building and a fruit stand. The owner of said fruit stand hadnāt particularly appreciated him choosing to set up camp there, but, well. Camel was off taking a nap in the bay. He wanted a nap, too.
Instead, he scrutinized her, and then the bread, before holding a hand out for said baguette.Ā āIs it because I look homeless?ā he asked, lip curling.Ā
Gabriel squeaked, shook her head quickly and gave him the baguette. āN-No! I meanā¦.sort of? If Iām being honest you do look a bit homeless. But! Thatās not the only reason why Iām giving you the bread!ā She said quickly before composing herself.
āI recognized you back when you were aā¦Yāknow. Anyways. Youād most likely not recognize me butā¦Iām recruit Gabriel Caper. Iām under Kizaruās division but Iā¦had to wake you up a couple times since you decided to nap in some veryā¦.odd. Places. The cupboardā¦.in a treeā¦on the roof that one timeā¦.ā she mumbled other locations before stopping herself.

He remembered a winter when heād been shoveling out the snow from in front of his home and had fallen asleep in the hole heād dug, like some happy little sled dog. Asking someone his age to keep track was asking too much.
āBorsalino, huh,ā he mused, tapping the baguette against his shoulder like a sword. āWell, sorry to hear that. Heās a goofball. Anyway, thanks for this. Itās not poisoned, is it?ā
āBorā¦Ah! Right yes. Heh. Iām so use to calling him by his alias. Heās not so bad. At least Iām not in the filing room like my friend.ā She chuckled, rocking on her heels.
āAnd the baguette is not poisoned hopefully. Iāve been using the bakeryās bread for my lunches and I would not like to drop dead afterwards.ā Gabriel smiled at the man before stepping to the side for a lady who dropped some change in front of him, muttering āgod help that poor man.ā āOh-ā āDoesā¦.does he really look that much like a hobo?!ā She thought, biting her tongue to keep herself from laughing. Which was successful! She managed to keep a straight face!
āArara,ā he said, sounding dismayed at the change lying at his feet. It wasnāt the first time someone tried to give him pity money, wouldnāt be the last. He wasnāt surprised when people didnāt recognize him, because there were a lot of people in the world, but this kind of treatment was still pretty new.
Nonetheless, he picked up the coins, blew the dust off of them, and held them out for the girl.
āThere you go, breadās paid for,ā he said, motioning for her to take the change. āI donāt need it, anyway. Despite how I apparently look. Careful, stick around too long and theyāre gonna think youāre with me or something.ā
