3 Dead Girls
3 Dead Girls Chris Broadstone recently edited together a collection of some of his short films, 3 Dead Girls. Overall, these three short films are some of the best micro budgeted shorts I have seen, and that opinion holds strong after screening many short film festivals over the years. One of the limitation of short films is trying to squeeze an entire story within a very short period of time.âŚ

David Bowie: Inspirational Stranger In a Deranged Land
David Bowie: Inspirational Stranger In a Deranged Land
Now, I could start this off talking about the impact David Bowie had on the culture I grew up in. It had been quite clear for a long time that he had affected every section of the art community. There are many articles that show parallels and connections to him that we can play Six Degrees of David Bowie. In fact, for being someone from another planet, he has impacted my culture quiteâŚ

Age of Ultron: The Movie that Broke My Love for Superhero Movies
Age of Ultron: The Movie that Broke My Love for Superhero Movies
Age Of Ultron: The Movie that Broke My Love for Superhero Movies Age of Ultron is the worst movie to happen to the Superhero franchise genre. Despite its publicity and praises on the script, Age of Ultron was the Transformers release of 2015. It made its bank, but critically it was a bomb. The AoU announcement came quickly after Marvel Comics finished up their reboot of Age of Ultron story arc,âŚ

In the Heart of the Sea (2015) This beautiful film is about self sacrifice and submitting to the awesome forces of nature. What this film is not about is a monstrous whale.

Black Mass (2015)
Many people have been waiting for Johnny Depp to shed his Jack Sparrow persona and return to the world of acting. Although Black Mass delivered his long over due performance, that wasnât all Scott Cooper delivered. Johnny Depp equally shares the screen with Joel Edgerton, who delivered a performance that was full of range and believability. In particular, Edgerton portrayal of John Connolly isâŚ

Nightmare Code (2014)
Nightmare Code is part of the Techno Horror genre that takes aim at the dangers of AI or technological dependancy while captivating the audience with unnerving tension balanced with twitch style editing. The Techno Horror genre flourished in the early nineties with movies like Lawnmower Man or franchises like Terminator or Cyborg. However, due to budget restraints or poor execution the genreâŚ

Human Centipede (2009) In 2009 Tom Six released a film everyone knows, few have watched, and nobody wants to see.
The One About Friends At the surface level, friends is a decade long sitcom about a group of friends. However, like many tv shows today, this series cleverly builds itself from a very long series of non-sequitur jokes.
Powers: Pilot (2015)
The pilot for Powers is an immaculate, paint-by-numbers, antihero, melodrama. Being a fan of Bendis for a better part of my life, it has been exciting to know one of his creator owned property will be officially adapted. However, I am not sure this is the adaptation Iâve been waiting for. First of all, the production design is a little too sterile looking. Even when the scene takes place in anâŚ

SoD : Let There Be Aliens! (A Critical Review of Mass Hysteria)
Lately, the news headlines have actually been interesting. It is not the fact that satirist have finally drawn the line, or that we are oppressing them their artistic expression. but itâs the fact that other people or other organizations are actually attacking them, fatally attackingthem in some cases. A lot of people seem to be wondering why people believe strongly in these fictional depictionsâŚ

REBOOT, REMAKE, %&$#@!
Oh man, I really hate when they announce reboots or remakes. Honestly, I don't know what the difference is. Anyways, it's always a one two sucker punch. First of all, there's always the fan outcry. There's that one crybaby who says they are going to ruin their childhood with it. Really? Their entire childhood relied on whether or not some studio was going to remake their favorite movie? Yeah, hate to say it, but that childhood was long ruined before Michael Bay ever touched it. You say, âOh, they don't really mean that. They are just over exaggeratingâ. Hmm, then why do they brow beat everyone who mentions it. Why do they go out of their way and stand up on a platform shaking their finger and crying out about why the movie is so terrible before it's even released? I've heard this backlash against, Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, Transformers and everything else that has been remade. They honestly believe this remake will damage this licensed properties reputation. I remember when Ninja Turtles went on tour and danced on stage after they went back in time. I remember Star Trek having a whole plot based on the whole Save the Whales campaign of the 80's. Transformers is a toy which used cartoons to promote their product. Thirty minute long advertisements aimed at kids! Now, if I so much as see a humpback whale share the same scene with the enterprise or a ninja turtle reach for a microphone, I will join in and make a kill list. Besides, it isn't like they are going to have a Berlin book burning event to kickoff the release of the reboot. In fact, they will actually release the previous installments in another shiny package with even more special never before who-gives-a-fuck-does-anyone-actually-watch-this footage. However, I would rather these studios actually have a book burning event and publicly apologize for Voyage Home, Turtles in Time, Batman & Robin, Rise of the Silver Surfer and have a ceremony where we all toss in those atrocities of Hollywood. Then we finally get our validation and we can cry on Arnold's shoulder and say, âthere there, I will always see you as the Terminatorâ.
Then there's the horrifying aspect of why are we making this reboot in the first place? Seriously, why are did they remake a movie about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Let me digress and deconstruct this for a bit. Although we've seen Teenage Mutants prance about Marvel for the last century, what about the Ninja Turtle part screams hero? Ninja's weren't heros. They were trained assassins who backstabbed Feudal lords in the middle of the night. Ninja isn't even a word. The correct word is Shinobi. Ninja = dumb ethnocentric Americans making up words to misrepresent other cultures. Some of you might be saying, âhey man, they represent honor, tradition, and familyâ. Nope, those are Japanese samurais not Chinese Shinobis.
Yeah, moving on. And then there's the turtle part. What bong and shroom pizza hallucination was Eastman on when he looked at a turtle and thought, âhey, I bet turtles would be amazing at martial artsâ. The same creature when you flip it on its back it will helplessly squirm until it eventually dies. Look, if you're remaking a story based on animals where it could ârealisticallyâ end with, âand then Shredder pushed all the turtles onto their backs and set out a sticky trap for splinter. The Endâ, it might be time for the producers to wonder if it's worth shelling out 200 million dollars. Granted, before his Ninja Turtles fame, Kevin Eastman put out a titillating movie full of ass and heavy metal cleverly titled, Heavy Metal.
Regardless, don't tell me this guy who looks like that psycho weasel from Roger Rabbit defined your childhood. He might not even be a good role model for a midlife crisis. What he should serve as inspiration. No matter how batshit crazy your pitch might sound, there's always some talented agent out there who can turn it into a billion dollar franchise for kids.
Despite that lesson, somehow hollywood has ran out of bottom of the barrel ideas, and they are to the point where they need to remake these properties. Â
You're doing it wrong
You know how sometimes you have that one annoying friend who will give you a play by play take on what you and your friend just did? They will say and the you said and then I said and then she said and then we all said. This is when you are thinking, âOh god, please shut up! I was there you fucking moron!â This is the exact same thing I think whenever I read peoples reviews which circle around the plot for four hundred words or more. I guarantee you that annoying friend didn't say nearly that many words before you had the urge to strangle something because of the redundancy. When I read a review, I don't want a cliffnotes version of the movie which is peppered with spoiler alert. Instead tell me what the highlights are. Nope not the plot points the highlights. Did somebody do something unique? Did they pull in themes or use different storytelling techniques. How did it look? Have you noticed how many reviews of movies don't even talk about the visuals? It's a visual medium. People review movies like they are still four years old, âand then this happen, and that happen , and then boom. Oh yeah and I really liked the music and pretty ladyâ. Please, I know there are some serious reading comprehension problems in this country but I am pretty sure we are capable of handling a bit more detail than that. Â
